Love that you can see the cogs turning in the cat's head when its person is showing it how to pot the black. The cat is Looking and Understanding! And then it does it! Perfect little helper. 💜💜💜

Cats love to be Included in their human's activities. Kitty here has successfully participated in the Knock Balls Down Holes Game and feels very pleased about it.

I didn’t know cheetahs meow I’ve always thought they roar my whole life has been a lie

Ok but the other one is purring so hard

If I ever don’t reblog this assume I’m dead

Fun fact: technically, because of its inability to roar and its ability to purr, the cheetah is not a ‘big cat’ (or Great Cat) - they are still classified as Lesser Cats.

Also you haven’t heard anything until you hear them cheep.

YOU CANNOT JUST SAY THAT AND NOT PROVIDE A VIDEO

I HAVE REALISED MY MISTAKE AND SHALL RECTIFY IT:

Cheeps.

Oh my god

I’m dead now

MURDER KITTEN SOUNDS LIKE A CHICKEN PEEPER

They make that noise to signal their Cubs

It sounds like a bird so it doesn’t alert predators such as lions or leopards to the location of them or their babies

Yarn is an invasive species btw, if you put it in your bag without proper environmental controls it will kill and eat the other things in your bag until it is the dominant species

somehow instead of saying "as a treat", I've started using the phrase "for morale", as if my body is a ship and its crew, and I (the captain) have to keep us in high spirits, lest we suffer a mutiny in the coming days.

and so I will eat this small block of fancy cheese, for morale. I will take a break and drink some tea, for morale. I will pick up that weird bug, for morale.

I'm not sure if it helps, but it does entertain me

Makes sense though.

"Treats" are things you earn.

But keeping up morale is an essential part of being a good leader, and you, as the consciousness that directs your body, are in charge of doing that.

Also if you do not keep up morale your body will, in fact, commit mutiny. Often at very inconvenient times.

Death By Daystar

Hello, Darklings! At the time of this writing, the Earth’s Northern Hemisphere is under the influence of a major geomagnetic (solar) storm. While no catastrophic damage has occurred, it has produced some amazing aurora that have been seen as far south (in the US) as Alabama. My husband and I were out on our back deck last night here on the Oregon Coast and he got some gorgeous pictures. (I can’t…

An Interesting Fact About Peanuts, while we’re on the topic of food-plants:

Peanuts-you-eat grow underground, but they are NOT part of the peanut plant’s roots. Peanut plants are ambitious little fuckers and plant their seeds themselves. They flower like any perfectly reasonable legume, but once the flowers have been pollinated the plants do something called “pegging” (no really), in which they drill the stems where the flowers used to be into the ground. And that’s where the peanuts you eat form. Like so:

I’m going to pull myself together to endorse this Extremely Interesting Fact, but it’s going to be a real struggle

Ain’t botany fun?

i never would have guessed the earth gets pegged by peanuts

On Thursday, the US government issued its first severe geomagnetic storm watch in nearly 20 years, advising the public of “at least five earth-directed coronal mass ejections” as well as sunspots covering an area 16 times wider than the earth itself. A severe geomagnetic storm, or G4, is the second-highest grade in the US government’s classification system.
Radiation from this activity will begin to hit Earth’s magnetic field on Friday and last through the weekend, said the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

This is the migraine storm I was talking about. I think it was last month that we had a previous geomagnetic storm, and I had a two-day hangover afterwards. And I don’t usually have migraines; I have weather (air pressure) headaches. And now they’re like, oh lawd he comin’. Get out your ice packs and your OTC painkillers and your magnesium supplements and your caffeine (or not, if that makes it worse). I am not looking forward to this.

Expect random computer/device crashes.

Our atmosphere + magnetosphere stops 99.99% of the energetic crap from reaching the earth, but occasionally that 0.01% slips through just so and a bit or three of RAM in your device gets flipped. If that happens to the wrong byte at the wrong time it can crash a system.

If you have ECC RAM the likelihood of that happening goes down dramatically. That's why it's used in servers and other critical devices.

But consumer hardware? Not so much.

so. um. the good news is we found your boyfriend. the bad news is that, well, we sort of…dug him up…in the middle of a car park. in leicester (buckley et al. 2013). leicester, yeah. sorry. they demolished the friary he was hastily interred in when henry viii dissolved all the monasteries. you know how it is. and as it turns out, well, shakespeare was…sort of right about him. scoliosis, yeah, sorry (appleby et al. 2014). if it makes you feel any better we analysed his bones and it turns out he had a pretty high-protein diet before he died (lamb et al. 2014). and he drank so much wine that it changed their chemical composition, which we didn't know could actually happen before we analysed him (lamb et al. 2014), so he was having a good time, at least.

This is the second time in my voting history that I’ve participated in flipping a red seat in Alabama for Democrats (the previous time being my beloved Doug Jones) so it’s always funny to see people turn around and say voting doesn’t matter when I’ve seen it twice in the past ten years flip seats in what is supposed to be safe Republican country. Republicans are digging their own grave with their radicalization and it is making them lose (and with your help we can make them lose harder). Vote.

Vote. If yours didn't matter, they wouldn't be trying so hard to make sure you couldn't do it.

Democrats outnumber Republicans in the US.

Democrats outnumber Republicans in several "red" states - the Rs just work very hard to keep them from voting.

In "red" states, every Democratic vote matters, even if they don't win; it proves support, and it makes the Rs nervous about pushing their agenda. (And in states where there is also voting on laws, the public can block some of their agenda even without voting in a Democratic governor or majority in their legislature.)

In "blue" states, Democratic votes help remind everyone that we outnumber them, and help push the Overton window to the left.

If voting didn't matter, nobody would be wasting money trying to convince you not to.

“Dogs don’t know what they look like. Dogs don’t even know what size they are. No doubt it’s our fault, for breeding them into such weird shapes and sizes. My brother’s dachshund, standing tall at eight inches, would attack a Great Dane in the full conviction that she could tear it apart. When a little dog is assaulting its ankles the big dog often stands there looking confused — “Should I eat it? Will it eat me? I am bigger than it, aren’t I?” But then the Great Dane will come and try to sit in your lap and mash you flat, under the impression that it is a Peke-a-poo… Cats know exactly where they begin and end. When they walk slowly out the door that you are holding open for them, and pause, leaving their tail just an inch or two inside the door, they know it. They know you have to keep holding the door open. That is why their tail is there. It is a cat’s way of maintaining a relationship. Housecats know that they are small, and that it matters. When a cat meets a threatening dog and can’t make either a horizontal or a vertical escape, it’ll suddenly triple its size, inflating itself into a sort of weird fur blowfish, and it may work, because the dog gets confused again — “I thought that was a cat. Aren’t I bigger than cats? Will it eat me?” … A lot of us humans are like dogs: we really don’t know what size we are, how we’re shaped, what we look like. The most extreme example of this ignorance must be the people who design the seats on airplanes. At the other extreme, the people who have the most accurate, vivid sense of their own appearance may be dancers. What dancers look like is, after all, what they do.”

— Ursula Le Guin, in The Wave in the Mind (via fortooate)

This paragraph went in so many different directions before it ended. What the fuck Ursula
