The names of all victims from the mass shooting at Pulse Nightclub released thus far are all Hispanic who were either part or in support of LGBT community. Please, don’t erase the identity of the Hispanic-Latino LGBT members & supporters killed in their own safe space, a GAY nightclub, when it was LATINX/HISPANIC night.

To every straight person who has ever said “But what about straight pride?” or who has ever thought that the LGBTQ movement ended with marriage equality, I want you to understand that my people are being attacked. My people are dying. My heart breaks for all of those who were at Pulse in Orlando last night. These people were targeted for simply existing in the world as who they are. All my love goes out to those survivors, families of victims, and ALL of my LGBTQ* family out there. You are all in my thoughts today.

Following Sunday’s attack on Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, the global LGBT community held vigils to commemorate and honor the at least 50 dead and 53 injured. See a full and growing list of events planned nationwide is available.

The shooter’s father has stated “this has nothing to do with religion” with regards to his son’s actions. 

His son saw two men kissing a few months ago in Orlando and it made him angry. This was homophobia. This was a hate crime. Do not pretend that it was anything different.

It’s the month of Ramadan, a holy month in Islam. Part of the rules for Ramadan is not to fight or be violent. The shooter clearly didn’t follow Islam to the letter and this was not in the name of religion.

This is my friend Drew, on the right in the top pic and in the yellow pants in the bottom (back in my ~days as a twink~ 7 years ago). His boyfriend Juan is the other guy in the top pic, I’m just hearing that Juan died in surgery.

Drew’s still missing. I hope he’s okay but it’s hard to be optimistic now. I can’t lie and say we were close, we just hung out a couple times in our group of friends and have been Facebook friends since. I’ve lost touch with most Orlando friends from college. if he’s indeed gone I wish I had gotten to know him more than I did - he was super smart and kind and so comfortable in his own skin. He had so many friends. There’s probably a thousand people thinking of him now.

Most people probably won’t remember him. I don’t really remember the names and faces of other shooting victims, but the names and faces of the shooters are seared into my memory. It’ll probably be the same thing here for most people.

But I’ll always remember Drew. I hope he’s okay. Keep him in your thoughts please.

Rest in peace Drew Leinonen (1984-2016). I wish I’d known you better, friend. Kind of bummed that I posted about Donald Trump and it’s getting hundreds of notes compared to this - I dunno how tacky it is to ask for reblogs, but if you could pass this post around, I’d really like people to see it so they can put faces to this nightmare.
