I'm taking a hardware and mecha design class on CG Master Academy with Michal Kus, and the first assignment was creating sketches of hardware pieces. The Great Fungus City. I made this piece as an entry for an online course on environment design taught by David Harrington (lead 2D/3D designer at Blizzard). This was all done using Corel Painter, which is a big departure from Photoshop. Photoshop it's a great photo manipulation program, but painter (obviously) works much better as a digital painting platform. It lets you feel like you're working with actual paint and brush, which is pretty awesome. I learned a lot about lighting a and value scales, and how not to give up on a painting when you think you've truly screwed it up.
