I love how the big bad is one of the most confused people in this whole ordeal is the big bad.

Major villains who have complete control over everything and mastermind literally the whole plot are out, and major villains who are absolutely flabbergasted by the heroes and just out of the depths in how fucked everything is going for them are in.

There are three types of dungeon meshi posts in my experience.

One: Senshi says to eat a healthy diet and get moderate exercise in order to live longer!! ( •̀ ᴗ •́ )و!!! Thank you Senshi!

Two: This character is gay and autistic. Which character? Doesn't matter. It's all of them.

Three: So if you consider the implications of this bit of lore from the back of a napkin dug out of Kui's trash, you'll see how the political weight of access to food ties the series' depiction of racism into the themes of consumption and coexistence within an ecosystem—

the “you remember my name right?” bit is funnier in the anime because I don’t think he told Laios at all. Like in the manga he introduces himself when he first meets Laios, but in the anime he just never mentions his own name so I really think Laios genuinely hasn’t heard his name yet.

Edit: people are saying that Laios DID say Kabru’s name at one point so I’m gonna rewatch and try to confirm or deny this and I apologize if I lied to… *checks notes* 800+ people 🫡

Shîsâpento is such a good episode to introduce Kabru as a foil to Laios.

The fight with the fish-men reveals how closely Kabru understands his team member’s mannerisms. Kabru is genuinely interested in people and interpersonal relationships. Because of this, he’s damn good at fighting humans and outsmarts and overpowers the corpse retrievers. But, he gets his ass kicked by the sea serpent because he doesn’t understand monsters.

Kabru is also a much more typical hero, in contrast to Laios. He’s zealous about justice and convinced of his own exceptionalism. He’s the most competent in his team and the others trust him without hesitation.

When I first hit this part in the manga I think I hated him, and I wonder if anime only fans are feeling the same way. But I think he’s already such an amazingly well-rounded character, especially knowing how he develops.

I also love how Dungeon Meshi shows how different characters see the world and how that changes their approach to solving problems.
