One of the biggest mistakes that mainstream liberal organizing has made (particularly in liberal/progressive religious contexts) has been to lose sight of nonviolence as a tactic and instead conceive of it as a moral imperative. Tactics develop, evolve, and change over time as they become known and circumvented by counter-tactics. Nonviolence in the civil rights movement was a tactic that juxtaposed the state’s (and rank-and-file white people’s) brutality against motionless and non-aggressive black bodies, specifically in the context where camera crews were documenting things the police weren’t used to having be documented. In that context, the tactic found success.

Modern interpretation of nonviolence as a moral imperative, on the other hand, does not allow room for development. The belief is that we must practice nonviolent resistance because it is right, not because it works. And that interpretation is the thing keeping people from realizing that the context has changed and nonviolent resistance doesn’t work in the same way. The state has learned how to manipulate and circumvent it as a tactic, but liberals are too married to it as a moral point to notice.

Black people had to train with violence in order to properly practice nonviolence as a tactic. This does not get passed on to the younger generations, who, due to the white state and their vapid holiday, now believe the frilly version of history as if it was simply a moral or religious imperative that made us “better” than whites for never physically resisting.

It’s not a symptom of “bad” liberalism but rather the functionality of liberalism as a whole. Anti Black racism is just as much in their recipe book as it is for conservatives, as hard as a pill that is for most to swallow. This is precisely how the state regurgitates the thorn in their side into the bludgeon to use against Black people, specifically.

Liberals didn’t just become married to the concept on their own, they were led by the nose to it as a counter-tactic of the state. They have this interpretation because they are attached to anti Blackness.

It’s a cancerous line of thought, and the anti-Black racism that underpins this process of warping Black civil rights history cannot be separated from the subject. The civil rights movement, as it was spearheaded by Black activists, paved the way for all activism to follow; if anyone wants to know which way is up, they need to have that historical context.

The state has explicitly turned the nonviolence tactic into their own evil tool to render the public perception of Black people as explicitly violent unless Black people present themselves as not only nonviolent and peaceful, but as acquiescing to the “moral” imperative of not ever physically resisting white abuse without simply waiting for white intervention. Even into death.

In some cases, Black people can be seen as violent for not religiously forgiving white racists, murderers and rapists after their crimes, and feeling sorry for their souls.

To call this something as trivial as a “mistake” that liberal organizers make completely misses the abject maliciousness of white supremacy and the white supremacist state and it’s ability to literally infect all aspects of society, history and public consciousness with ever-new forms anti Black racism.
