Found this gem while going through old screenshots. Turns out the girl got hepatitis from this and only found out when she went to the doctor when she got pregnant. What's awful: literally everything. According to her this was done with a prison style tattoo machine. How it can be fixed: I really don't think it can, not to mention the illness.

How are going to be a blog that promotes high quality jewelry when one of your own moderators makes a business out of selling low quality 'economy' eyelets?

Avatar

Hopefully you're ok with me answering this myself-- I figure if I don't it might go ignored and I wouldn't want anyone thinking I'd delete something like this to "save face." Consumers are capable of making their own choices. It's stated on my site that customers are welcomed to provide their own eyelets if they have a sensitivity to 316L steel or if they flat out prefer implant grade materials. I push people to send glass or titanium all the time. Bottom line, my jewelry is a novelty that most people don't wear for days on end so they can't justify shelling out for implant grade metals for what is essentially a costume piece. If I were out to just make a business of swindling money, I'd give in to the countless requests I receive to work with acrylic eyelets. I do draw the line.

I also want to note that I do work in a reputable shop and have had conversations with professionals on the topic a multitude of times. We're a shop that shouts "Implant grade only!!!" from the rooftops, but we still sell jewelry from big name brands that work with "mystery" metals or brass alloys and recognize that juxtaposition. Would I recommend wearing white brass hanging pieces as every day jewelry? Of course not. I warn consumers of that too. So bottom line, I don't feel the educated use of economy steel invalidates my other experiences.

Hey PSA @ people who wear body jewelry/captive barbells etc

DONT BUY “BODY METAL/RAGE” BRAND EARRINGS FROM SPENCERS!!!

I’ve been wearing these for little under a week and I couldn’t understand why my ears were getting infected again and again, turns out these earrings are super cheap (tho they’re bein sold expensive!) and the paint has been pealing off on my earholes the whole time!!

So far I haven’t been too hurt by this but this could really be a problem for some people esp since I don’t know what exactly is in the paint!

What’s worse is the type I’m wearing was advertized as SNAKE BITES so this woulda come off in some poor persons mouth!!

Please stay safe and DO NOT BUY THESE!!

Edit: a pic the earrings after removing them

Seriously. Stay the fuck away from this brand.

Spencer’s jewelry is a literal nightmare. Please everyone, Anatometal brand captive bead rings (link, link, link) are not that expensive (~$9 each) and they are made to last for YEARS. The coating is essentially PART of the metal, so while it may fade slightly with wear, it is not harmful and will not flake off. They’re also the same grade titanium they used in joint replacements etc so you will not be allergic to them!!

Is it possible to find a good piercer that's not an APP member, or should I stick to APP members only?

It is absolutely possible for a piercer to be reputable and not be an APP member(although they should totally join because we’re better in numbers!). APP membership only signifies that a piercer meets a certain minimum standard that we’ve set forth for our industry, it does not signify skill level in any way. I have many friends whom I consider to be phenomenal piercers that are not members. This brochure will help you find yourself a good piercer, APP member or not.

Submitter’s comment: found this while looking on facebook for a tattoo shop around where I live. This girl (who left a two-star review on the shop page) has several other bad piercings and modifications, but this one takes the cake.

What’s awful: the jewellery is sticking out on both sides and it looks inflamed.

How it can be fixed: HELP!  Take it out and try again with a better piercer and proper jewelry (could use a 90degree surface bar or two surface anchors).

While I was visiting @thrivinjesse last week at @thrivestudios a client came in with her mother and this piece of jewelry. This came from a reputable fine jeweller who specializes in diamond rings, watches, necklaces, etc. and although their work on those items is wonderful, this is a prime example of why body jewelry is different from regular jewelry. This piece has been stamped with the content of gold, directly on the stem of the nostril screw, this is inappropriate for a number of reasons being as this is the part of the jewelry that will sit INSIDE of the piercing channel itself. The grooves from the letters and the poor finish over all will allow bacteria and other things to grow and cause any number of problems, as well as tear skin cells as it is inserted into the piercing itself. Remember there is not substitution for gold jewelry SPECIFICALLY made for body piercing. #justapiercer #notallgodisequal #legitbodyjewelry @piercer_memes #bodyjewelry #gold

Hey there, I was wondering if someone could give me some advice on industrial piercings. I got one done about a month ago at a really great piercing studio, and it's all been good, but I noticed a very tiny bump on the inside of my ear right by the bar. It's not bruised, bleeding, or sore -- but I do have some worries that it might turn into an infection -- even with the daily soaks and care. I understand it might be nothing, but I would love some tips to prevent such just in case ❤

Bumps are not an early sign of infection. It is important for people to realize that many problems related to piercing are not caused by bacterial infections, but rather physical pressure, allergic reaction, or chemical irritation.

If you suspect your jewelry may be a lower grade material you could be having a mild allergic reaction that is leading to scar bumps forming. If you are confident that your jewelry is a decent quality then I would think about chemical irritation from things like soap or shampoo. Hair care products can be very irritating to new piercings when not avoided or at least rinsed thoroughly. Also avoid physical stress from touching, picking, or moving the jewelry.

So I wasn’t going to post this, but after learning that the jewelry of his that the asker of this had fell apart within about a month, I think it’s worth a post. He also doesn’t seem to list on his website what it’s made of, just that it’s “high quality”, which seems shady to me. Also, I don’t know what the prices of piercing are in LA where he’s located, but they seem overpriced and also I’m not sure why industrials and genital piercings are SO much more expensive than the rest of his piercings? I know LA is more expensive than what I’m used to, but especially if he’s using his cruddy jewelry, his piercings are at least a bit overpriced. And since he’s not listed as a dealer of Anatometal or IS jewelry, I can only assume the “high quality” jewelry he’s using is his own.

Say no! to mall Jewelery

I have been wearing a surgical steel CBR for the last 7 years in my septum and have never had an issue. recently i lost the ball, and the spare ball..  then the ring fell down the sink. I was in need of a new piece and i was currently saving up for a titanium clicker.  So i just needed something temporary, since i was already at the mall i stopped by that certain store that used to be "all about the music"  since i had a discount to use. I saw this cute little opal and "surgical stainless steel" piece and bought it. I've been wearing it BOUT 2- 2 1/2 weeks now, i clean my piercing with qtips after showers a few times a week blah blah blah. But then i got an irritation in my nose, i wrote it off to allergies till my nose got tender then i took the clicker out so i could let my piercing rest a little bit, and lo and behold CORROSION!

Yeah... not going back in my nose.

What would you recommend for someone who didn't want to lose their navel piercing during pregnancy?

And one more. And another. (about “pregnancy jewelry” - which is an absolute scam)And one last one.If you don’t want to lose your piercing (due to pregnancy), don’t get pregnant. I don’t mean to sound like a jerk, but that’s the truth. The bellies of pregnant women stretch out quite a lot and so will your navel. I think more damage will happen to the piercing if you try to keep it using ‘pregnancy jewelry’ rather than just taking out the jewelry early on in the pregnancy.

Do you know if babypietattoo makes quality body jewelry?

Avatar

Hi, Petra of BabyPieTattoo at your service here!

All of my ready made body jewelry is 316l stainless steel which is an economy level of steel— suitable for most people. For those who have more sensitive piercings, I allow customers to send me their own (new, unworn) eyelets if they would prefer a different material, flare style, or color of titanium. Even glass works!

All of my inlays are set away from the wearable area and I take the utmost care to keep my process sanitary.

Please feel free to contact me personally or visit my site FAQ for more info.

SUBMITTER'S COMMENT: I just saw this on my Facebook feed. This guy ripped off a piece of his lobe (if you want to see it), and simply put it back in place, hoping it heals itself. Plus, he stretches with silicone, and got HUGE blowouts. WHAT'S AWFUL: He just left this here, without proper medical care. This second hole is badly placed. Not to mention the poor attention he gives about his ears. Well. HOW IT CAN BE FIXED: Maybe by first taking off that poor tunnel, and look for medical advice about this.

What are some reputable body jewelry companies? I already know of gorilla glass, anatometal, idustrial strength, leroi, neometal. What about oracle, body circle designs, diablo organics, or sm 316?

All of those are very good companies

Yet another "professional"

Submitters Comment: Was scrolling through Facebook recently when I came across a girl whom I know personally has been doing unprofessional piercings. I've witnessed her pierce people multiple times in filthy outdoor areas without gloves or any sanitation before hand besides maybe water at best.

What's Awful: She claims she has been doing it for years and assumes that is what qualifies her to pierce people. Also, that she has performed such doings on herself. She actually charges money-cheap or not-for these terrible piercings. She claims if something happens to the piercing, it is your own fault due to the fact that you don't know what you're doing.

How It Can Be Fixed: DO NOT get pierced by someone who claims they're a professional. Do your research, and remember that you get what you pay for.

Submitter's Comment: This work of art was done by an unlicensed "tattoo artist" in his kitchen with cats shedding and stepping all over the equipment. He is the only person that does tattoos in my small town so most people go to him, but he obviously is terrible at it. Most if not all of the tattoos he's given people are terrible but I think this one takes the cake.

What's Awful:  What isn't awful? Look at that shading and the wonky lines. Like I said, this was done in a kitchen with cats running around everywhere. He got this a couple of months ago and I'll be surprised if it isn't infected or just looks like a huge blob by now.

How It Can Be Fixed: No idea. I don't think there is anything that can fix it by this point. Bless this kid's heart.
