Where as Snape “bravest man i know” was a doe. He did not match Lily. He did not compliment her. He worshiped her enough that his soul just longed for her, not to match, compliment and help her.  He thought only of himself with Lily, not Lily and how he can compliment her. Basically, Snape wanted Lily for himself, whereas James wanted Lily to be the best she could be as an individual.
