Day 9 - Batchims - #12DaysOfHangul
Up until now learning Hangul has been painless. That’s why it hurts me to tell you that the sounds we’ve learned for each letter are not always constant. Sometimes they change. We learned that sometimes Korean syllables have a 3 letter combo (C+V+C). Where the “C” stands for consonant, that third “C” has a special name. It’s called batchim. This word means support floor in Korean.
Different letters will make different sounds when they fall into this “support floor”. They can be divided into three groups. Let’s take a look at our 14 consonants and see what group they fall in. The first group of 5 consonants are easy. They stay the same even in the batchim position. We’ll call this group…
the Loyals
1. ㄴ ➞ 눈 = noon 2. ㅁ ➞ 몸 = mom 3. ㅋ ➞ 캌 = kak 4. ㅌ ➞ 탙 = tat 5. ㅍ ➞ 팦 = pap
It’s important to note that the letters ㅋ, ㅌ and ㅍ rarely find themselves in the batchim position and when they do, their sounds are cut short. In other words you wouldn’t pronounce a strong “p” sound when ㅍ is the bottom consonant. Think of the word “pop” and how that third “p” doesn’t pop as strongly as that first one.
Moving on to our second group. This group of consonants is our most fickle of the bunch. The sound they make depends a lot on whether they’re on top or bottom in the C+V+C scheme. Luckily, there are only 4 of them and we’re calling this group…
the Yo-Yos
1. ㄱ ➞ 국 = gook 2. ㄹ ➞ 를 = reul 3. ㅂ ➞ 밥 = bap 4. ㅇ➞ 영 = yung
As you can see ㄱ takes on a K sound, ㄹ takes on an L sound and ㅂ takes on a P sound at the bottom of a block. The silent letter ㅇ speaks up when it’s at the bottom. It makes an “ng” sound like the one found at the end of the word “ending”.
Finally, there’s a third group of 5 consonants that, for whatever reason, make a “t” sound when they’re in the batchim position. We’ll call this group…
the T stops
1. ㄷ ➞ 닫 = dat 2. ㅅ ➞ 삿 = sat 3. ㅈ ➞ 잦 = jat 4. ㅊ ➞ 찿 = chat 5. ㅎ ➞ 핳 = hat
When pronouncing the “t” sound in the examples above make sure you don’t make a strong “t” sound. Stop and cut it short. You do this by not letting that last bit of air out when your tongue touches your upper teeth.
Batchims take practice. Memorize the 3 groups above to simplify the process.
Pretty notes for an ugly subject
As most of you know, I have anxiety, and I know there are a lot of other people who struggle with it so here’s a post of some tips for studying with it (based on my own experience).
Anxiety might make it difficult to concentrate on a task like reading or writing. You may have intrusive thoughts or physical symptoms which make these tasks difficult.
You can help reduce the effects of anxiety by knowing yourself and your limits. One way to learn about this is to keep a diary about your experiences with anxiety to see if any patterns emerge. You will probably find that you have both high times and low times. You should make effective use of the high times and accept the reduced productivity of your lower times.
Find the things that make you feel better. For example, I have some gifs which I like to breathe in time to to calm down and feel better. Find what makes you feel better, keep it on hand, and use it. There are lots of different resources which can help you, and these are some of my favourites:
- Animal planet live streams of animals
- Positive bunny post
- You can make your own galaxies here.
- Pixel thoughts
- This one translates the time into a colour.
- This website lets you travel along a 3D line you move the line with your cursor).
Set yourself realistic goals. Anxiety can get in the way of completing a piece of work, or getting a reading done. If you discuss this with a teacher or tutor, they might be able to give you extended deadlines or something along those lines to help deal with those situations.
Because anxiety can have such a large effect on your work ethic and motivation, it’s especially important to develop time management and planning skills. Make sure you account for any setbacks you might face when planning how long time you allocate a particular task; if you think that you will struggle, give yourself more time.
- Get a decent planner; use the style which best suits you and your needs.
- Check with tutor about assessment criteria.
- Write down all of your deadlines in advance.
- Keep your note organised. You won’t have to search around for notes, and you’ll know exactly where everything is.
Feeling depressed is often a side effect of anxiety so it’s important to create an environment which you enjoy. Recognise your achievements, and make a list of affirmations, reading and carrying them as a reminder of everything positive. Celebrate your achievements, whether it’s getting a good grade, or going to the shop.
Talk to your friends and family. In the last year, I found talking to friends about how I was feeling invaluable. They were there to support me when I needed it and respected when I felt that I needed to be alone.
Anxiety is likely to increase in times of stress so try to keep your stress levels to a minimum. Some ways that you can do this are:
- Regular exercise
- Taking care with your diet
- Resolving personal conflicts
- Practicing breathing techniques
Most universities/schools have student support services. Use them.
Consider counselling/therapy. In counselling, you can explore what is worrying, and counsellors can help you understand what is happening to you. If you don’t want to do this in person, there’s an online service called 7CUPSOFTEA which lets you talk to therapists and counsellors online.
Think about using medication. I see a lot of stigma against medication on Tumblr, but it is fine. It can help deal with a lot of symptoms. Yes, there can be side effects, but doctors can adjust your dosage or change your meds to find the exact med and dosage which suits you and your needs.

Back-to-School Giveaway!
Hello lovely followers!
I’m sure its caught your eye, but I’m an avid bullet journal fan. It works well for me since I tend to keep dates in my head pretty well. But one planner I truly admire is the Day Designer planner by Whitney English. They’re well made and can easily be turned into a bullet journal as the normal layout is a day on one page. During a Target run what do I run into except for the Blue Sky’s designer series by Day Designer!! If you’ve ever wanted one of the Day Designer planners but couldn’t afford the price tag (they run about $50-60) head to your target and look for the new planners by Blue Sky with Day Designer.

《 One of my favourite places to study. This seat is right by the window so there is plenty of light and it’s perfect for people watching (not in a creepy way). 》
Paris is always a good idea…
Bought myself some new stationary to get motivated 👏 I've ordered some books to start studying from but they won't be here for at least a week which makes me sad but I'm glad they're on the way. My goals until I can start learning from the books are:
1. To learn 15 words a day (105 by the end of the week)
2. Review level one on Talk to me in Korean and make notes in my new notebooks and
3. Make a few basic sentence translations to get corrected at the end of the week
My friend 성경 gave me a list of basic words she said I should learn first, if anyone wants them I'll link them :) Study hard! x
Reblog if you want to take part in our reading challenge!
We’re doing a challenge where we read books from the “100 books to read before you die” list (do check that out, it’s a fantastic list)
Everyone who reblogs will be tagged in a post where we can update each other and stuff. So get rebloggin’!
I wanted to make a “pretty” post as a way to find more studyblrs to follow so please re-blog this is you’re a studyblr!
Something a little different to answer the question of ‘How should I study?’ I’ve done some research on the main three learning types- visual, auditory and kinesthetic, so just see which one fits you best (you might be more than one), and try out the six most popular methods I’ve found for each. For reference, I’m a visual learner, can you tell? Haha!
