things I’ve learned to say to boys: -you’re not funny -don’t talk to me like I’m dumb -I probably know more about this than you do -don’t fucking talk about her like that -I’m not comfortable with this -I don’t owe you anything -you just repeated exactly what I said -no

“I’m staying at the Salvation Army. It’s embarrassing, when you look at somebody my age and ‘You’re homeless?’”
“How long have you been homeless?”
“About two and a half years. I had a landlord problem. My rent was only $450, and then he was gonna jack it up to $600. And he assaulted me. He was drunk. He wanted to beat me up, he was grabbing at my clothes like I was a man in a barroom brawl. So I locked the door and I never went back.
For seven and a half months (of the year), I live in Minnehaha Park. I call it ‘camping.’ I’ve made many friends at the Sea Salt restaurant, because I don’t beg, I work. So I work behind the patio, and I clean up, and then they feed me.
Many people fall between the cracks. There was a woman there, her name was Bernice. She was 80 years old, and homeless with her two daughters in their 50s. When she was pregnant, she drank, so her daughters had some disabilities. Instead of them taking care of her, she was taking care of them. Then there’s a blind lady there, she’s in her 60s. They really don’t belong at the Salvation Army. Some of these people have disabilities, they have canes and walkers, and they have poor health. And yet they’re at the Salvation Army.
See, the Salvation Army gives you a bed and food. But other services, see, they fall between the cracks. There’s one woman, her name is Sarah, she’s gotta be in her 70s. And she told me the other day she worked all of her life, just like me, and she’s homeless. She says that she hopes that she doesn’t live much longer. She’s on her little Social Security money, like me. They’re building all these beautiful apartments, but they’re not affordable…”

Three-Country Cairn | the intersection of Finland, Sweden, and Norway
Also known as Kolmen valtakunnan rajapyykki, Treriksröset, or Treriksrøysa, the three-country cairn was erected in 1897 to mark the international border between the three countries.
