imagine if you will, a fairly dry survival crafting game in which you live in a bunker and must periodically venture out to scavenge food, set up turrets for attacking monsters, etc

now, your computer inside the bunker has a game-inside-a-game on it which is a charming farming sim of undeniably greater quality and scope than the survival game you're playing. therefore, the object of the game becomes to keep your bunker secure so you can play the farming game more.

now, once you achieve the highest rating in the farming game, a secret shop inside it unlocks, and one of the novelty items you can purchase is a game console, giving you access to games-inside-a-game-inside-a-game. most of the games for it are typical mobile shovelware, but one of them is a highly polished, extremely brutal precision platformer with amazing level design and production values exceeding that of the survival game and farming sim combined.

it is only at this point that the purpose of this entire contrivance becomes clear: to create the most deranged speedrun community the world has ever seen.

Tell me about a turn of phrase that introduced you to the power of language, especially if it comes from a source that most people disregard.

I'll start: one of the first times I really fell in love with a line from a song was when I heard "I'd Really Love To See You Tonight" on the radio.

The chorus goes:

I'm not talking about moving in
And I don't want to change your life
But there's a warm wind blowing the stars around
And I'd really love to see you tonight

I have been obsessed with the line "there's a warm wind blowing the stars around" since I was something like 6 years old. It's so beautifully economic in its word use, isn't it? You know that the night is clear and beautiful, it's windy but warm, it's a perfect night for being outside and looking at the sky. In eight words, even as a small child, I had a perfect mental image of what that night looks like.

The other one that always comes to mind is the Muppet Christmas Carol song "It Feels Like Christmas," for one line only:

It is the summer of the soul in December

The "s" sound in summer, soul, and December all fall on the beat. It is a perfect example of using consonance (as opposed to alliteration, which would require those sounds to all be at the start of the word) in lyrics or poetry, and is one of the first times I really remember that concept sticking in my mind. (I use consonance very heavily in my poetry, so that's, like, formative.)

Tell me about the language that showed you what language can do - and for my sanity, please make it cool stuff and not like "and that's how I learned how shitty propaganda works," bc while that is in fact part of how language works, this is Tunglr dot com and I'd prefer to have a nice time today. Thanks.

My edition of 'language that showed me what language can do' was 'I Am The Horrible Goose That Lives In The Town' by Daniel Lavery, the written piece about Untitled Goose Game.

It's such a glorious piece.

I am the horrible creeping bag of sound that is the most worst to you! I will use my beak to mischief you and I will press B. I wobble my snake-front-body and I waggle my bag-back-body and they meet in the middle to plan a bad idea to upset you. I flap back and forth my business rear for balancing and I snapple-pap my feet all up and down the town for terrible reasons, and you don’t like it. I am the goose and you are the miserable boy with no honk. I invented my body and it was the best idea.

Look at that. That is someone having infinite fun with words, and creating something incredibly evocative.

I am the most goose who ever was, and I am enough goose for the whole town, because I am a little white heartbeat that moves very fast, more fast than anything else, for surprises.

I could talk about all the books and poems that built glorious palaces out of words, the ones I've read and explored since I was small, but there are so many, and I'd rather be showing you this fairground house of mirrors to get lost in and giggle at the way everything reflects back and forth.

I say "I invented my body and it was the best idea" all the time. So good.

A thing I quote all the time is "You've gotta risk it to get the biscuit" which is nonsensical but seeing as its from a c-list 00s sports romcom I'm not surprised. At the same time I'm like right! sometimes I do gotta push my luck, be brave, and see what happens. I can't win if I don't take risks.

I have a textpost from 2016 saved as a screenshot on my phone because man, it stuck with me enough that I had to hold on to it somehow.

img id: a screenshot of an old style tumblr textpost. the firstline is op's url evilsupplyco. the second paragraph is the post that reads: She had the confidence of a well organized library and the haunted grace of a moonlit cemetery.

"Where is the boy for me to disrespect? I am his least friend. I see his games an I contempt them. I ruin his life! Glasses for him? No! Shoelaces for him? No! I make every escape. I am the pest of his whole awful body but my body is so smooth and good. My body works. My body is the softest triangle with a hose attached, strong and useful and all the way sweetheart."

Kind of hilarious to me how poorly the title "Mob Psycho 100" localized to English-speaking areas. To someone whose first language is English, it scans as:

  • Mob (Yakuza, Mafia)
  • Psycho (violent person with "crazy" behaviors)
  • Thus: a particularly violent member of organized crime.

But in Japanese it scans as:

  • Mob (background characters in crowd scenes in manga or anime)
  • Psycho (short for psychic)
  • Thus: a psychic who looks/acts like someone you'd never pick out of a crowd scene in a comic.

"Psycho" to mean "someone with psychokinesis" has been an anime thing since the 70s so I knew that one but the meaning of "Mob" really never crossed my mind. I thought it was just his name for no reason at all.

treasure planet is a fucking phenomenal film and was released during a time where it was destined to be forgotten by everyone

Fun fact: Slitted pupils only give you an advantage when your eyes are just a few inches above the ground. They help you focus on small and close up prey in the horizontal plane. That’s why they’re primarily found in animals like snakes, foxes, cats and reptilians.

Round pupils don’t work as well when they’re that close to the ground, they’re more suited for hunting larger things that are also further away than pouncing distance, which is why larger predators like tigers and humans got them.

But that doesn’t mean your cat person character or whatever, needs round pupils, it just means it is implied that they mostly hunt small animals and that they look like this while doing so:

as newspapers today dont tend to hire children, a modern day Tintin would run a clickbait YouTube channel, except the clickbait is 100% real every single time

he starts off as an irritating conservative pundit at 14, meets Chang then leaves the think tank paying him and launches his own independent channel and blows up shortly after. Chang helps with video editing and managing his socials and they often chat on video calls between adventures. Haddock, his foster dad, has absolutely no knowledge of his earlier videos.

One more joke hate: You may claim to be a woman but biologically you are a featherless biped and thus a man.

Finally a good argument for why I'm actually a man

if you told diogenes the cynic about being trans he'd be like "lol that's a sick troll you're epic" and you'd be like "diogenes no i'm serious" and he'd be like "lol that's even better lmao those guys are so mad about it" and then he'd start going by new original neopronouns every single day specifically to piss off the whole symposium

I just had an idea for a really dumb comedy sketch where a transphobe starts ranting about what really makes a women a woman, and diogenes returns each time with a different cis woman or outwardly femme intersex person that doesn't meet the criteria saying "behold, a man!"

"a woman has XX chromosomes"

*Diogenes with an androgen insensitive XY cis woman*: behold, a man!

"Nono, a woman can bear children!"

*Diogenes with someone who has medical complications associated with pregnancy*: "behold, a man!"

"nono, a woman produces the large gamete"

*Diogenes with a postmenopausal cis woman* "behold, a man!"

Trans Rights With Diogenes! coming to PBS

cant talk rn obsessed over the design concept of this 2017 production of pinocchio as a stage play where pinocchio is the only character played by a human actor and the rest of the cast are portrayed as puppets ,,,

like. how insanely poetic is this . you are a boy and you are made of wood but you know so entirely that you are more than wood, you are as human as anyone made of flesh and bone and it's not your fault that you came into the world with sap running through your veins instead of blood. and your entire life you are searching the world for what it means to be human but the dramatic irony of it all is that none of them know how to be human either. you keep reaching out for humanity and they seem so big and powerful but they are just puppets of a greater design too performing for an audience you cannot see. and whether you know it or not you are more human than any of them even if they are convinced you are just wood and paint and magic. im on the floor .im losing my mind over here. gimme a second guys hold on. wait a minute guys wait a goddamn minute like. wahta a good fucking design concept. head in hands !

i just finished reading dungeon meshi and would like to state:

if you have been under the impression up to this point that dungeon meshi is a low stakes found family slice of life about quirky fantasy friends talking about food (like i did before i read it), i'd like to tell you that it is not that. those moments of found family enjoying a meal are surrounded by a harrowing and grim journey through a terrifying labyrinth designed to kill them, and throughout the 97 chapters comprising it from start to end, I cannot think of a single page that didn't contain vital story information that mattered.

it is an expertly and lovingly crafted odyssey with fantasy world building so thorough with consistent logic that the properties of the magic in their world fell extremely comfortably into the part of my brain that understands things like gravity and light particles. it's really good shit.

extra things that make it worth recommending:

keeping in the theme of "no wasted panels", theres also no wasted time, setting up the premise and end goal that will encompass the entire story in the first chapter. as someone who watches a lot of anime who dilly-dally in getting to the point, i found this very refreshing.

also, the main character is written to be autistic in an extremely believable way, and i dont mean that in a "its my headcanon!" way, i mean it in a "the vast majority of character conflicts he has directly involve his inability to communicate, even though to him he speaks very plainly and directly as best as he can" and a "his niche obsession that other people cannot understand and find offputting is something that gives him a great deal of joy, and his passion and competence in it gives him strength that other people can't and seemingly refuse to try to understand" way. as someone with The Same Problems, i found myself having a deep love for his character at the end. like, he is really something else.

if i keep thinking about it i could make this list a mile long honestly, its a really very good story.
