Watching Princess Mononoke might have been the biggest let down of all time.

Don’t get me wrong, the plot and meaning of this movie is wonderful, but every gif set and post I’ve seen about it makes San (Princess Mononoke) look like the bad ass protagonist who kicks buts and saves the day.

HAHA WRONG!

She starts out shrouded in mystery and fucking shit up for her antagonist, but in the end she become a love interest for the main character. YEAH THATS RIGHT SPOILER ALERT. SHE ISN’T THE MAIN CHARACTER. INFACT THE MAIN CHARACTER HAPPENS TO BE A PRINCE WHO VALIANTLY SAVES HIS VILLAGE AND IS CURSED AND GET AWAYW ITH FUCKING EVERYTHING. LITERALLY EVERYONE LOVES HIM FOR NO REASON. HE GIVES BOTH SIDES OF THIS WAR REASONS TO MISTRUST AND HATE HIM BUT NO MATTER WHAT THEY WELCOME HIM BACK. LIKE STOOOOOOP. HE EVEN SAVES HER IN THE END….

no. no. no.

This movie is not called “Prince Ashitaka” no it’s called “PRINCESS FUCKING MONONOKE”. I am so bitter. I wanted to love this movie. I love studio gbhili. I really do. But they destroyed their strong female character… I’m not sure if it was just like really shitty writing at the end but they literally turned this warrior girl who runs with wolfs into nothing more than the love interest.

NO. NO. NO. THAT IS NOT HOW YOU WRITE A STRONG FEMALE CHARACTER. THAT IS NOT GOOD. DO NOT GIVE US WHAT WE WANT AND THEN RIP IT FROM OUR HANDS MID MOVIE!

You really need to watch the movie again and open your eyes. You have no idea how wrong you are with this post. This movie is one of Miyazaki’s favorites and it is very powerful. How does Ashitaka make everyone hate him? that I could not understand. He was the most forgiving and kind hearted man - who wanted to save both sides. He was never against anyone and yet you believe he deserves to be hated? He helped the village and the forest so why wouldn’t they welcome him? He is honest and compassionate - he never decieved anyone so how did he give them reasons to distrust him? He was for peace. He was never for or against anyone. That to me, is honorable and brave. and he stuck by it. He also sacrificed himself to save his village and yet you’re going to condemn him as a horrible person people shouldn’t like or trust? That makes no sense.

San was not just a love interest.

San was her own. She SAVED Ashitaka and fought to protect her home. If she was thrown in there as a love interest, the ending would not have happened like it did. San does not fall to his knees and decide to follow him to the ends of the earth. She does not surround her world around Ashitaka. She is thankful for what he did but bids him farewell until next time.

She does not throw away who she is because of him but remains strong to her beliefs and character. San also grew to understand Ashitaka’s views and even though she can’t forgive the people of iron town for the damage they have caused, she did not label Ashitaka as the enemy because he wanted to help them. She remains the part of the wolf pack. She is still strong, even if she is allowing herself to be loved.

To me, that is a strong thing for her to do. She knows nothing about how it feels to be “human”” since she was raised by wolves and yet she was willing to open her heart to Ashitaka and even then she only did so because he saved her life. The only thing I can agree with you on is the title. The story does revolve around Ashitaka but I know there is a reason why Miyazaki named it Princess Mononoke. Perhaps she was the symbol of principle he wanted us to learn. idk. But everything else, I strongly disagree with and I can write why all day.

The reason it was named Princess Mononoke was for the appeal in the box office. Miyazaki intended it to be called the Legend of Ashitaka, but he was outvoted. End of story.

Also, it's called 'character development' and 'dynamic writing' when a character comes to new understandings and changes some of their views based on their experiences. What made the movie great was the fact that these characters GREW and LEARNED and INTERACTED with each other and changed each other because they COMMUNICATED.

San did not yield herself to Ashtaka, she did not compromise anything of herself to help him, in fact, through him we see that she has more to her than the angry, posessed wolf girl the villagers see her as. The movie does a wonderful job of justifying the reality that each side of a conflict views their cause as the greater one, delineating the struggle for right and wrong in a situation that is not so clear cut.

If you want a story with static characters who can't see past their own noses, then you won't find anything like that among Miyazaki films, so you're wasting your time in that regard.

Fear Makes the Wolf Bigger [Event Open] ||

Curiosity overrode their better judgement, and the many smells and sounds of the festivities were enough to draw San and her brother away from the relative seclusion of the park.

There was little to be found in the way of nourishment for the both of them among the small animals that lived in that part of town, so to find such an abundance of food out in the open was a welcome change. With only slight hesitance, San stepped into the crowd with her brother in tow, letting her nose guide her.

The throng of activity did not deter her like it used to, as the time spent within the city had long since inured her to the Hive's large human population. She had come to recognize how little danger the inhabitants posed to the wilds in and around the city, and though not quite comfortable among the people, San was at least no longer openly hostile to those who crossed her path.

That did not, however, stop the humans from giving them a wide berth as they passed; not that they minded.

Daichi suddenly stopped to sniff out a particularly alluring smell, sticking his nose into someone's pocket and trying to take the object of his fixation in his maw.

"San! Do you smell this?"

Emi’s plea at the end is what snapped her out of her state.

The last thing she wanted was to frighten the girl, and San’s face immediately took on a softer look. In a soothing gesture, she came very close to Emi’s side and passed a hand through her hair, like she used to with her brothers.

Her face was still tight with trepidation and confusion, but no longer full of sharp edges and angry lines.

"I still do not understand how you enjoy pain, but know that I reacted as I did because I care."

To be honest she was a bit lost for words, and that was about as close to an apology as she was going to get right now. She did not regret her reaction; Emi deserved to know how she felt about all this.

It didn’t seem like the girl was angry anymore. Yet Emi did not relax, and only spared San a glance when she ran her hand through Emi’s hair. Though she wanted so very badly to turn and hug San and cry she didn’t. Instead she drew her knees to her chest and kept her gaze averted.

“‘S not my fault I like it…” she mumbled in a weak attempt to defend herself. Didn’t do much to soothe herself. No matter how many times she told herself that it was the doctors’ fault she was like this, it all wrapped around to being her fault again. But she’d still try to convince herself. Maybe if she convinced someone else it’d be easier…

"Th-They made me like it. I had to like it o-or they’d hurt me more an’ yell at me more… an’ now, now I can’t— I still—" Her gaze flickered about and finally rested on San; she stopped herself from saying any more as she realized how vague her words had been. She swallowed and searched for something to say, but all that came to mind was an apology.

"… Sorry."
