What's the Time, Mrs Woolf?

@whatsthetimemrswoolf / whatsthetimemrswoolf.tumblr.com

Last summer I kept asking sarahfogg if Poppet (WTTMW?) and Nisse (Hilda series) and Lis (Seconds) were all the same kind of house fairy thing, so Poppet made me a chapbook explaining a bunch of different types of house fairy from all over Europe. It’s super cute, Poppet is the cutest. (the book is mini comic size, like A7?) (here in the midlands we have House Hobs - just like Poppet! :D)

The bottom photo is of a hand made notebook, with a quote from Bananaz …. I realised we filled last years music zine with Bananaz quotes but then never explained where they were actually from. X’D

WTTMW? itself may still be on hiatus, but Poppet the House Hob has been keeping busy making zines of her own! She thinks they’re called chapbooks though.

Can anyone submit to the zines or does it have to be a certain style of work?

There's no style guide, we consider submissions from anyone, in any style. The only bias we apply is that we favour female contributors over male ones. We also love to get new contributors so if you were hoping to submit something then please do!

(I hope you don't mind that I've posted this rather than answering privately, it seemed a good thing to emphasise to any other potential contributors.)

As promised, here is a recording of me reading out Lilywoolf's intro for the PIRATE issue! Please enjoy my horrible pirate voice.

Our Autumn issue for this year is still open for submissions until the 20th of September! Our Autumn theme this time is GHOSTS. If you would like to send us a ghostly comic, article, illustration, recipe, how-to, or anything else (including questions or problems for our resident agony aunt and font of knowledge, Poppet the House Hob), please email us at whatsthetimemrswoolf@gmail.com

For this issue we particularly encourage any ghost stories (real or fictional) and true-life paranormal experiences...

Attention Woolves! What's the Time, Mrs Woolf? is now accepting submissions for our Autumn 2014 issue! Our Autumnal theme this year is GHOSTS...

We will consider ghostly articles, comics, short stories, poetry, illustrations, recipes, instructions and how-tos, fact sheets, puzzles and anything else. If you'd like to read it when you pick up a zine, we'd like to see it! (Even if it's not strictly ghost-themed.) For this issue we especially encourage classic and original ghost stories, and real-life paranormal experiences...

As usual our resident fairy, Poppet the House Hob, is also ready to answer questions and give advice and information to hapless humans. Questions for Poppet are always welcome!

The deadline for this issue is Saturday 20th September. Any submissions received after this date will be considered for the Spring zine.

Please send submissions to whatsthetimemrswoolf@gmail.com

The format is A5, black and white or greyscale, 300dpi JPEG files. If you'd like to submit a cover illustration, the cover format is A4 (landscape), full colour, 300dpi, JPEG. Please read our full submission guidelines for further information, or email/message us with any questions.

Please note: due to life events Lilywoolf and I have decided there will be no Winter zine this year. If you are thinking of submitting we encourage you to submit to this Autumn issue! While we do accept submissions at any time, the next zine after this one won't be printed until Spring next year.

Avast, Woolves!

With rather un-piratelike apologies for the lateness of this post, we present the Summer 2014 PIRATES issue of What's the Time, Mrs Woolf? for your viewing enjoyment! This issue contains articles, comics and illustrations from many dastardly wenches, and in the spirit of law-breaking and thievery a ROGUE MALE has even sneaked his way in...

In this issue: A shockingly coloured internal cover by the talented Gem 'She Got All The Gems' Sheldrake.

Article: Lesbian Heroes: Anne Bonny and Mary Read by our own Lilywoolf.

Illustration: Things Sarah Sees: In The Living Room by Sarahwoolf (my own self).

Article: Oceans... Oceans... an article on the good lady Tetra in the pleasant parlour game Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker by our ROGUE MALE, James 'Long Jim Silver' Smith.

Article: Sailing Superstitions, a fact sheet of some common nautical beliefs by Sarahwoolf.

Recipe: Old Jamaica Coco Pop Bars by Lilywoolf.

Article: Sailor Moon vs Peppa Pig, an analysis of gender roles in children's programming, by Nel 'Nefarious Nautical' McDonald.

Instructions: Sewing Sans Pattern: Adding A Sailor Collar by Sarahwoolf.

Article: Vile Bodies, an analysis of Mama Dola and the figure of the older woman in Studio Ghibli films by Lilywoolf.

Comic: Stale Symphony: Lost Socks Pirate by Sammy 'Barbarian Of Barbados' Borras.

Ask Another Question! our ship's fairy answers the questions of another hapless human.

Special thanks to our own Lilywoolf, for doing the cover, intro, contents, credits and other extra admin stuff for this issue, allowing myself a much-needed break for some freelance jobs. Keep an eye on the woolfblog, for in thanks I will be recording myself reading her excellent pirate-voiced intro aloud and posting it here on the blog.

Arrrr, while we be takin' this here issue and the three precedin' to Comica Comiket tomorrow, that's not a lot o' notice fer an event, so this issue also be available for purchase on our online shop!

With further apologies for Sarahwoolf's inability to inset links, the Woolfshop is now open again! We've dug through our stock boxes and re-listed some back issues that had previously sold out. If your collection is missing issue 3, 4, the HAIRY issue, the SPOOKY issue, the FESTIVE issue or Spring 2013, now is the time to buy them! Be especially speedy if you're missing issue 3, the SPOOKY or FESTIVE issue, as we had only ONE copy left of each.

If you only started reading or contributing recently, we've also added the back issues in bundles. You can now buy back issues in pleasingly-wrapped bundles of 4, for 50p less per zine than they cost individually.

The next event we'll be attending is Manchester MCM, 19th-20th July, where we will launch the Summer 2014 issue. We only take the four most recent issued to events, so please take advantage of the Woolfshop for all your back-issue needs!

Call for submissions May 2014

Calling contributors past and new! This month What's The Time Mrs Woolf? 'zine is accepting submissions for our Summer issue. The theme is PIRATES. The deadline is the end of May. Send us your writings, drawings, comics and more! Please send submissions to whatsthetimemrswoolf@gmail.com. The format is b&w a5. We accept articles, illustrations, comics, recipes, creative DIY tutorials, reviews, photography, poetry, interviews and more. Our themes are women, creativity, and anything that offers an alternative to the consumer mindset of your average women's magazine: DIY, thrift, positivity and eco-consciousness. If you have an idea for a feature we would love to hear from you so please get in touch!

Here it is, the completed Spring 2014 issue of What's the Time, Mrs Woolf? Photographed in appropriately grey and fuzzy Spring light.

Features in this issue include:

A Spring-themed door picture by Gem Sheldrake. www.petitecreme.com

A new Lesbian Hero from our own Lilywoolf, this time controversial author Radclyffe Hall.

An illustration from brand-new contributor, Leslie Boroczk! http://lb-lb-lb.tumblr.com

This issue's Sewing Sans Pattern (by yours truly) shows you how to add pockets to your clothes, since lack of practical pockets is such a persistent problem in women's clothing!

Regular contributor Meg Guindon has provided a cute two-page comic for our reading pleasure. www.regardezmoichat.blogspot.ca

The weird and wonderful Clem Tarrant presents another illustration, The Littlest Triffid. www.clemillustrates.blogspot.com

Opposite Clem, another submission from Gem Sheldrake, this time a melancholy comic page.

Nel McDonald has offered us the use of another of her great analytical articles, this time Female Bodies In Film, an analysis of Her that was also featured on the Huffington Post! www.withnelandi.blogspot.com

A lovely Spring wolf from another new contributor, Jen Muir!

Comic maker extraordinaire Sammy Borras has drawn us a new installment of her regular comic, Stale Symphony. http://sammyborras.tumblr.com

Last but not least, Poppet returns to aid another hapless human with her fairy expertise.

Not pictured are another two submissions, a Lesbian Heroes bonus illustration by Lilywoolf, and a super-cute one-page illustration from Deborah Clerkin, titled Rocher Mountain. www.deborahclerkin.co.uk

This issue's cover, intro and writing-up duties were done by my own good self.

I'm afraid this issue won't be available to buy online for a while, as we are considering a move to a different online shop, but until then you can find us at these upcoming events:

Bristol Comic Expo 10th-11th May

London MCM Comic Con 23rd-25th May

or get in touch with us directly at whatsthetimemrswoolf (at) gmail (dot) com.

Thank you to all our lovely contributors, we're already looking forward to the next issue!

Sarahwoolf (with apologies for lack of inset links, ancient laptop in need of replacement)

Oh no! It's only two days until the deadline for What's the Time, Mrs Woolf? Spring 2014, and nobody has asked Poppet the House Hob a question!

Poppet will be very put out if she has no questions to answer. If you have a problem, or you just want information, please allow Poppet to apply her fairy expertise!

You can email us at whatsthetimemrswoolf@gmail.com, or ask Poppet a question here on tumblr. If your question is printed in the zine we'll also send you a copy so you can enjoy Poppet's answer in all its creatively-spelled majesty.

Call for Submissions - Spring 2014

It's that time again, Woolves! We're getting ready to put out our first zine of 2014, we hope lots of you will contribute! The deadline for the Spring issue is 28th February.

As usual we’re looking for articles, reviews, comics, illustrations, recipes, poetry and creative writing, puzzles, how-tos, questions for Poppet, anything you’d like to see when you pick up a zine! As this is the Spring issue, it’s a good time to submit anything Spring-related, or otherwise in keeping with the season. However, there is no set theme, so we will still consider non-Spring-themed submissions!

The format is A5, black and white, 300dpi jpeg files. Please remember this zine is lady-types only, so we will only be accepting submissions from women, girls or other lady-types.

Please send your submissions to whatsthetimemrswoolf (at) gmail (dot) com by the 28th of February.

We’re looking forward to seeing them!

Many thanks to all our lovely contributors, we hope you'll enjoy all their hard work!

BONUS PHOTOS !! Some extras from Volume Print Fair

  • Poppet sent me a tiny get well note because of my bike injuries
  • Roley Rhino met Sarah
  • Roley found some beautiful rhinos both illustrated by Jane

Our good friend and zine contributor Sammy Borras had a bike accident a few days ago, and Poppet was very worried! She made sure we took Sammy a note at Volume so Sammy would know Poppet was thinking of her.

Hello! I would like to start this time with a big thank you to Shaz, Sarah, Jack, Mum and Dad for their help at the weekend! I really needed the help due to a bike accident at the begining of this week so it was much appreciated, you are all super awesome!

Thank you to everyone who came by our table at Volume for a chat. I hope everyone enjoyed reading their comics and zines!

We had to travel light this weekend so the table looks a bit less packed. If you are interested in ordering online you can browse through the following online shops

In the morning on saturday we were given the chance to draw or write something to go in a 3 colour risograph zine which was printed before the end of the event!

My alien drawing is on the inside back opposite a lovely illustration by Kristyna Baczynski

Jack’s illustration ended up opposite Dan Berry’s illustration

and Shaz drew super cute pink portraits of some of the Inspired gang!

Thanks again for a great time

Inspired got a last minute table at Volume in the Library of Birmingham, so I took some What's the Time, Mrs Woolf? issues along.
