Our Protego campaign has made big steps in the fight for trans rights and safe spaces.

Just some of the things we’ve done/generated with your help:

  • Over 2,500 actions at fan conventions.
  • 1,100 postcards and emails to legislators.
  • 292 Aurors taking weekly actions.
  • Partnered with ACLU to successfully petition the NBA to stand up for trans rights in North Carolina.
  • Over 1,000 downloads of the Protego toolkit.
  • Weekly articles and videos by trans creators.
  • Partnered with GLAAD for a video discussion on trans content creators and safe space.
  • Chapters have held training classes on using gender neutral language, and have worked to have gender neutral restrooms at their events (and a loooot more if you would like specific things).
  • Collected and donated 170 books and a community scrapbook of loving messages for teens at the Orlando Youth Alliance.

Remember that outward appearance doesn’t equal identity. How society expects you to look doesn’t change who you are. I’m a trans boy, even if you wouldn’t know it just by looking at me and my “traditionally feminine” appearance. I know that some trans women love wearing makeup, but I also I know a trans woman who feels most comfortable shopping in the men’s sections at stores and despises wearing cosmetics. How someone presents does not define who they are — what matters is that everyone feels safe and accepted enough to present however they want.

Big movements start with individuals. When many people make small changes in their personal lives, we create a place that’s safer and better for everyone. The Safer Community Pledge is a simple step people can take to stand up against sexual violence and harassment. We hope that this pledge encourages us to make small changes in our personal lives, and that it encourages us to continue discussing this critical issue.

You can take the pledge by sharing this post on your favorite social media site. By sharing, you’re committing to the following:

  • I pledge that I will always prioritize consent. I understand that consent is the presence of an enthusiastic yes rather than the absence of a no; and that consent cannot be given when someone is asleep or physically or mentally incapacitated.
  • I pledge that I will respect my partner’s wishes, and that I will not pressure or coerce them into doing anything that makes them uncomfortable.
  • I pledge to stand with survivors of sexual abuse or harassment by showing them compassion and respect.
  • I pledge to never blame the victim for any abuse they’ve experienced. Sexual violence is never the victim’s fault.
  • I pledge to admit when I make mistakes, and to apologize for my actions. When someone tells me that I’ve said something sexist, victim-blaming, or otherwise offensive, I pledge to be open to their words.
  • I pledge to support conversations surrounding sexual abuse and harassment in a way that is respectful of my needs and the needs of those I am speaking with.
  • I pledge to create safer communities, both online and off.

After taking the pledge, we encourage all of you to let us know why you did so! We’ll be sharing responses publicly throughout the campaign. We hope this sparks discussion and shows how much support there is for positive change.

Join the discussion and join the movement! Pledge to make a safer community. #SaferCommunityPledge for a #HealthyYoutube

ACCIO BOOKS: Our annual book drive is now underway! The main Harry Potter Alliance, of which we are a chapter, has been hosting Accio Books since 2009. This will be our chapter's 3rd year participating in Accio Books. (more about Accio Books: http://www.thehpalliance.org/accio_books) Our first year we collected over 600 books, and last year we doubled that and collected over 1,300 books! This year, the North Shore Chapter will again donate our our books to the Women's Lunch Place in Boston, MA. (more about the WLP: http://womenslunchplace.org/) As our donation boxes go out, we will post locations here. Book donations may go into the boxes, or to any member to hold on to. We will collect them all together in one home at the end of May, and plan a day to travel together to bring the boxes to the Women's Lunch Place. Further, if you are an individual who would like to take care of a donation box and work with a business to host one (or if you are a business owner/manager interested in the same), please let us know as we want everyone to be as involved as they want to be!
