don't complain about anti-intellectualism when people ask for simplified language, or ask you what something means. simplified language can help neurodivergent/intellectually disabled people, people without much formal education, and people who aren't fluent in whatever language you are using

anti-intellectualism is when governments and other powerful institutions try to silence teachers, scientists, artists, among others, because they don't want people to question their power or learn things that those in power disagree with

two very different things

What makes me excited for the Barbie movie is that it's clear that everyone involved understands exactly how ridiculous Barbie is. And they revel in it. They love it. They celebrate it. Every trailer and every ad radiates the joy of the absurd.

Did some researching on my very uncommon last name, and found out that while my recent ancestors were from Holland, the specific regions and my name itself are actually Frisian, which is a completely different ethnic group with its own history, language, and culture. I mean, sure, it's not a huge shock, I'm still white, but it's another example of how white people colonized ourselves and erased our own cultures for the homogeneity of whiteness.

Some internet language things I really like:

  • Phrases like “that’s certainly a thing”, “it’s so shaped”, or “one of the most animals” (is there a name for this?)
  • when people write with little to no punctuation like they are just so done
  • More specifically, asking questions without punctuation i.e. ‘what’ or ‘why’. It’s like, you want to know but also you are resigned to the answer?
  • When people capitalise The Thing for emphasis - particularly if they add a trademark symbol to really drive The Point™ home
  • How we use both bold and italic text for emphasis, but they convey it in different ways and I can’t quite explain how
  • Responding to things exclusively with punctuation, because sometimes words fail you and all you can say is !!!

listen...Plants Are Free. an acorn will become a tree. Fallen leaves will become rich soil. The wild creatures and plants will come. You don't have to give them money.

I say this, not to deny that land, soil, seeds, and water are all made into commodities, but as a WAY OF RESISTANCE

The plants are your allies. They are fighting back every day, endlessly, clawing to return to the pavement and hard eroded ground, the abandoned lots and gravel piles left behind by the pointless and endless pursuit of profit. They are giving us seeds and nuts and acorns as gifts. The dandelions and blackberries are given to us freely by abandoned and neglected ground. Here, take this fruit and eat. Here, take these acorns and plant them. Here, take these leaves and protect and build the soil. Rest in my shade. Breathe my breath.

What do we do to survive the horrible machine, the wasteland, the all-devouring dragon? Listen to the plants. Observe them closely, learn their ways, and all of us, each of us, do the smallest things we can to be caretakers—grow and distribute the seeds, learn the names of trees and common wildflowers, protect the smallest patches of resistance in neglected corners of our neighborhoods. Take photos of any plant not planted by human hands, honoring the dignity of weeds. In the future, there will be no word for "gardener," because we will all be caretakers to whatever small or great extent we can.

Favourite genres of media include ‘makes me want to lie on the floor’ and ‘have to stop and stare into space about it for a while’ and sometimes both of those as well as ‘has rewired my brain so completely I will think about it every day forever’

okay tumblr’s exclusion from the twitter social media ban list is hilarious but genuinely we do not belong on there. if a real human person asks “where can i find you on social media” and your choice is a swift death or revealing your tumblr, most of us would simply expire. half of y’all change urls every week like you’re in witness protection. just imagine for one second attaching your wholeass government name to your latest two am clownposting and tell me that didn’t send a cold chill down your spine. the only place i ever want to see the words “connect with me on tumblr!” is on the ao3 profile of an author i’m actively stalking. anyone in the world can follow me except anyone i personally know. antisocial media.

Most people have no idea what galls are so just to bring everyone up to speed, very tiny organisms including certain wasps, mites, aphids and more can trigger the tissues of a plant to grow these as the animal's ideal home or incubation chamber, including specialized layers of modified plant tissue to protect and nourish the inhabitants. They're literally custom mutated plant cells, like an elaborate tumor programmed by the insect biochemically.

“Average American throws away 60lbs of clothing a year” “most people only wash an item of clothing ten times before it falls apart” ok how much of this is unsold clothing getting tossed throwing off the statistics? And if it’s not, What are you guys doing to your clothes. I still wear $13 shirts I bought in 2013.

Why should I recycle used clothing and household textiles?
Clothing and household textiles currently make up 6.3 % of the waste stream or the equivalent of 81 pounds per person thrown away annually in the US. Nearly 95% of used clothing and textiles can be reused and recycled. You can help reduce the amount of clothing and textile products going into landfills by reusing or recycling these materials.

please note how even on a charity recycling website, even though it gets it right that textile waste is equivalent to 81 pounds per person, even though it doesn’t make the usual error of saying that consumers are throwing that much away themselves, it still skips directly to assuming that you, yourself, as an individual, can do a damn thing about those 81 pounds you yourself actually have no access to whatsoever.

also for reference as to how much 81 pounds of textile weight is, a pair of decently made, heavyweight jeans can be about one pound. eighty one pounds of clothes waste per year is three pairs of jeans thrown in the trash every two weeks.

are you doing that? no? yeah that’s because target and gap and old navy are throwing out a million jeans in huge bales constantly, and we need to be bringing the issue up with them.

I don't think I've ever owned 81 lbs of textiles at once, let alone got rid of that much per year. These stats are so wild, it's crazy that they don't automatically criticize them.
