Whats the diference between a vet tech And a Veterinarian

Avatar

A veterinary technician is the exact same thing as a human nurse but for animals, and a veterinarian is the same thing as a doctor. The veterinary tech is responsible for drawing blood restraining animals, performing bloodwork, reading all laboratory results under a microscope. The veterinarian is responsible for diagnosing and treating as well as performing surgeries.

Is it hard to get into vet school and is it really all that expensive???

There are only 30 veterinary schools in the country so it is very competitive to get into veterinary school. Some say it’s more difficult to get into med school but I dont think there are many studies to prove that. When I applied a few years ago, there were 2,000 applicants for 150 seats in the class. Each school only allows so many seats for out of state students as well, so you have a better chance of getting into your home state. I somehow managed to get in my dream school which was out of state, and for 50 out of state seats there were 800 applicants.Tuition also differs depending on if you are an in state or out of state student. My tuition is $48,000 a year as an out of state student at the school I attend. Vet schools are not like undergrad where schools give half off tuition if you have a certain GPA and ACT/SAT score, the tuition thats listed is what you pay. I think Colorado State’s out of state tuition is close to $70,000 a year. So yes, veterinary school is insanely expensive! UW-Madison’s out if state tuition is the cheapest at roughly $28,000 but for 20 seats they had over 1000 applicants.

Were you really good at math/chemistry during high school? I want to be a vet but I'm concerned with the fact that I'm not amazing at math, and I'd imagine I would have to study a lot of physics, chem, etc before vet school.

Science yes, math definitely not! To get into most veterinary schools you only need to take up to Pre-Calc, there are only a few that do require Calculus. And yes, a lot of classes in undergrad require math, but with hard work and lots and lots of practice problems, it makes it a lot easier to understand! I also utilized tutors for general chemistry and physics and I'm so glad I did because they gave me tons of helpful tips! So many of my classmates were too embarrassed to get a tutor, but it may make a difference of you getting into to school or not getting into school! If its your dream, do anything it takes to get there.... Minus cheating obviously! ;)

Hi! So i saw in your bio you are in vet school. How much undergrad do you have to complete to qualify?

The majority of students complete all four years of undergrad and then attend the vet school after. However, some students that have all the required prerequisites after their third year are able to get accepted to some schools early. It is extremely difficult to accepted as a 3rd year but there are students who do it, its called the 3+1 program.
