What the AP photo story neglected to show was that this garden is in memory of Bassem Abu Rahmah, killed by Israeli forces with a tear gas to the chest in 2009 in Bil’in. The garden was planted and is maintained by Bassem’s mother.

Regulus starts taking his rings off, the one on his thumb going first. “So much for that,” he mutters.

“Wait,” James exclaims, “let me take you on a date.”

Regulus freezes, staring down at hand. “James.” He says coolly.

“What?” James pouts, he knows without seeing, he can hear it in his voice.

“You have a boyfriend.”

“Oh.” He almost sounds disappointed. “I’m sure he won’t mind.”

“Your boyfriend won’t mind you taking another man on a date?” Regulus finally looks at James, giving him a deadpan look.

James almost looks as if this pains him, a conflicted expression painting his face. “It doesn’t mean anything, you just… deserve better.”

Regulus can feel the petal unfurl in his lungs. “Not interested,” he lies, stepping past him.

“Wait— say yes, it’ll be fun,” he can hear James follow him. It only makes the pain worse.

“Go on a date with Andrew,” he spits out, the name tasting like rising bile on his tongue. He finally reaches his door and slams it shut.

Regulus only lasts the few steps it takes to get to his bathroom before he starts choking on air. He doesn’t make it to the sink; little flecks of blood start painting the tile floor.
