sadder back of a person than my father’s when he left

In my almost 21 years of existence, the saddest back of a person I've seen is the back of a running thief.

During a jeepney ride weeks ago, my phone was snatched from me. It was a big slap on my naiveté, momentary stupidity, and faith on people's innate goodness. But it was also an eye-opener at our nation's situation.

The bigger and more pressing matter about the whole incident is the sad sad sad reality that poverty exists. That a kind of poverty enough to meddle with another human's property exists. It breaks my heart that the person has to resort to robbery to fill whatever need he has. And, thinking further, I think this level of poverty is somehow related with poor quality education.

While those are real issues, there is also a possibility that I am overthinking. It is possible that the person simply "just felt like stealing hard-earned property" and I happened to present a window for him to act on it that day. But my faith on people's innate goodness dissuades me in dwelling on that.

I hope and pray that the day will come when we can walk on the streets of Taft Avenue and we can answer a phone call or text without fear or worry of seeing the back of a running thief.

Abandoned Towers of Books Appear in New York City

Caught up in a strange whim, Shaheryar Malik disposes his collection of books in teetering piles in public spaces. Scattered across Manhattan, his book collection has been abandoned and left to fend for itself at the hands of city dwellers to decide their fates. He doesn’t wish to know what will become of his books, or what may likely happen to them in this unconventional experiment.
