Being pissy about the Avengers initiative being named after Carol and the commercials saying, ‘Before the Avengers, there was Captain Marvel” on the grounds of “Captain America is called the First Avenger” doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. The Avengers Initiative was created by Fury, who wasn’t even born until after Steve had gone into the ice. We all knew that. Fury didn’t even meet Cap until he woke up in the post-credits scene of Cap 1. By then, Fury had already created the initiative. Steve is just the oldest, and his contemporaries of his time went on to found SHIELD which is a big deal, yeah. But he’s the “first Avenger” because he literally existed before everyone else lol. 

It’s like he played an early version of a sport before there was an official league, and then several years later Fury created a league after meeting a kickass player and named it after her. It’s really not that complex.
