P+J Arizona Trip, Leah Overstreet Portfolio Shoot

Shoot 2 out 4 with photographer extraordinaire Leah Overstreet. Leah and I have been working together for a few moons at this point. Leah was the only photographer not from Phoenix that I shot on location with in AZ in Jan. She traveled south from her hometown of Austin to create a fresh batch of portfolio / promo material. Like the other shoots, the brainstorming phase of what the subject/theme will be goes through many iterations. This specific shoot was slightly more challenging because both Leah and myself were putting together the production from afar. We ended up leaning on past connections from a shoot a year ago in Phoenix and scored the most amazing crew of people willing to help us create the type of outdoor lifestyle image we were after. This outdoorsy posse came entirely from a outfit called AOA (Adventure Outdoor Adventures). They run outdoor adventure tours in AZ and love what they do. They were tremendously helpful is sourcing all the gear and props we had on our shot list. Invaluable really. Mother nature served up a healthy dose of sunshine and we shot from dawn through dusk. The location we picked was stellar along the slow flowing Salt River. Just across the street from where we shot was classic desert scenes loaded up with Saguaro cactus for the mountain biking component. Leah wanted to expand her active lifestyle offering so that’s we did. We shot camping, standup paddle boarding, kayaking, slacklining, campfires and more. It seems to be a pattern with a bunch of these endeavors, but the day ended around the campfire drinking cold beer and telling stories. Take a look at the full set here.

P+J Arizona Trip 2016, Jill Richards Portfolio Shoot

The original idea of traveling to AZ to work with a handful of photographers to create new work bubbled up during a conversation with my client and good friend Jill Richards. Jill and I have been working together for well over a year now. I have tremendous respect for her photo skills and the way she rolls through life.

The first step was to figure out what we were going to shoot together. That process involved many brainstorming sessions. We discussed a boat load of ideas, from custom motorcycles to high-end resort lifestyle to a bunch of women enjoy cabin life in the snowy high-county. As we developed ideas and then locations and then people, we arrived at the idea of a mother and son glamping (camping in style). We then had to source the models. In order to keep expenses reasonable, we start talking about connections Jill had through social media. We meandered down that rabbit hole and ended up contacting a Instagram connection to see if she would be game to play for the day with us. This included bringing her 5 year old son as a model. Yes, a wildcard for sure since we had never met them directly. But it just felt right from our first contact with them, so we took a winger and carried on with laying out the production. Our model for the day with Hilary @hilarykathleen. She also happens to be a photographer who lives out in the desert with her son and a bunch of like minded folks. She shoots only film in an old camera body and has some solid talent both in front of and behind the lens. We provided a creative brief to them that spelled out what we were looking to do and they packed a small bag of clothes and met us at the location a few hours from their home. With a few minor exceptions, we shot all day with the clothes they arrived in. Being the natural beauty she is, we needed little makeup. The location we eventually found was perfect... Saguaro Lake Ranch in Mesa, AZ, about 30 minutes outside of Phoenix. We got the green light from the owners to come on out and shoot. It provided big rocky mountain backdrops, shallow rivers to play in and a huge field is which to stretch out and work. Then there were the props. Oh man, there were a lot of props for this shoot. We rented a tent from Stout Tents and propped the hell out of it. We had an amazing prop stylist with us as well. Big thanks to Jess Ruiz for gathering up tons o’ props. Jill’s husband came out to assist for the day and help rig up the monster tent. We shot non-stop all day long till dark. Kathleen and her boy could not have been better. Not one complaint and happy throughout. True pros and great people. We found our perfect models, real people who loved the process of getting creative and producing images. For Jill, it turned out to be a fantastic way to push herself to create a type of image she has been wanting to make for a long time. She pulled it off with flying colors. We ended the shoot sitting under the stars, fireside, sipping whiskey and toasting to the experience.

The final selects and gallery can be seen here. Take a look at the magic she created.

The P+J Arizona Trip 2016

In Jan of 2016 I decided to try out a new program for Pedro + Jackie. The idea was sorta simple. Get a group of photographers that were situated in the same region that I already had consulting relationships with, travel to their location and guide them through the creation of new work for their portfolio and marketing. So, I reached out to 4 photographers in Arizona and floated the idea. Actually one of the three traveled south from Austin. They all said yes to the idea. Here’s how it worked. I help the photographer develop an idea of what they want/need to shoot for their portfolio, then we co-produce the shoot bringing all the details (location, models, props, logistics) into reality. I then hop on a plane and travel in their direction. On shoot day I help produce and art direct on location, shoulder to shoulder with the photographer . Once the shoot is rapped, I then look at the bulk created and edit the goods into their portfolio / next promo piece. A lot goes into these efforts, but that is to be expected and one of the reasons many photographers find it challenging to produce personal / portfolio work on their own. These 4 images represent the 4 photographers I had the pleasure to work with. Introducing...Jill Richards, Christine Johnson, Mark Lipczynski and Leah Overstreet. I plan to write individual blog posts for each shoot to give others a peek behind the curtain on how these productions come together.

A great example of what makes a custom hand made print portfolio the king of portfolio showings. Photographer Ryan Dearth and P+J developed the idea from scratch and piece by piece it developed into it’s own. Hand picked Hyde, stamped logo, one piece of Hyde with no outer distractions beyond logo and soft leather, raw edge of exterior painted red, dark metal rivets, printed on rag (no plastic sleeves), easy to add/remove pages, built to last, built to make an impression.
