I feel that thing again. The thing I only felt once before. In the cave last year, when I was trying to get Haymitch to send us food. I kissed Peeta about a thousand times during those Games and after. But there was only one kiss that made me feel something stir deep inside. Only one that made me want more. But my head wound started bleeding and he made me lie down. This time, there is nothing but us to interrupt us. And after a few attempts, Peeta gives up on talking. The sensation inside me grows warmer and spreads out from my chest, down through my body, out along my arms and legs, to the tips of my being. Instead of satisfying me, the kisses have the opposite effect, of making my need greater. I thought I was something of an expert on hunger, but this is an entirely new kind.

“My mother and younger brother. My girl. They were all dead two weeks after I was crowned victor. Because of that stunt I pulled with the force field,” he answers. “Snow had no one to use against me… I was the example. The person to hold up to the young Finnicks and Johannas and Cashmeres. Of what could happen to a victor who caused problems.”

I realize only one person will be damaged beyond repair if Peeta dies. Me.

Favorite quote about Katniss Everdeen: It’s not always the huge, powerful, strongest who is best with the sword who wins. There are other qualities that are coming to play. Some of them are resourceful like with the food, some of them are just smart and being able to figure it out what’s going on. It’s interesting that’s in Katniss’s case her trump card ultimately in key situations, is almost always compassion. It’s that she felt compassion for a character who is weaker than her (Rue) and later someone else, you know (Peeta) It’s compassion that she doesn’t want to take out her district partner and is willing in fact, to do things that greatly endanger her life in order to save him. And these are the qualities that end up to affecting other players in the arena and the audience. And certainly are the qualities that end up affecting Panem as a whole. These are what people are responding to. These are where the seeds of the rebellion are planted. Not because she is good shot with an arrow but because she has a heart. (x)

Before COVID shut the library down, I was helping a little boy and his mom find books.

“What do you like to read about?” I asked. “Dinosaurs!” This is common request, but can mean different things, “Okay. Do you want a story about dinosaurs, or facts about dinosaurs?” “Facts.” I took him to the dinosaur section (567.9) of the juvenile nonfiction. He picked out a couple books, and I asked him if there was anything else he was looking for. “Do you have anything on DNA?” I had to think about that for a second. “I think so…but I’ll have to look it up.” The boy beamed, “I want to find out how DNA works, so I can bring them back!” “We just saw Jurassic Park,” his mom explained with a smile that did not waver when she added, “We didn’t learn anything.”
