A series of events:

1. I put in an Annual Leave request form almost 3 weeks ago and my boss has not approved it yet

2. I went into my office today and replaced every single writing utensil with crayons in preparation for April Fools Day on Monday

3. Whilst searching for pens to remove, I found my unsigned Annual Leave form in my boss’s drawer

4. I placed my unsigned Annual Leave form in a photo frame and put in on his desk

5. The frame I used was from a photo of his kids that I deemed less important than my Leave form

6. My boss sometimes goes into the office on Saturdays to work

7.

Troubles for the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital continue as a subcontractor accuses the provincial government of owing it $26 million for work on the project.

Simone Schendel-Reese, CEO of Schendel Mechanical Contracting, stated that the Edmonton-based company was one of 26 subcontractors that are collectively owed $60 million. She now plans to go through arbitration.

“We’ve been waiting for it to be solved with no response for seven months so now is absolutely the right time,” Schendel-Reese said.

First announced in 2007, the hospital is currently budgeted at $763 million with the exterior complete and work on the interior ongoing. Schendel-Reese said her company was responsible for plumbing, pipe fitting and welding.

In September 2018, the province announced it suspended work at the site after terminating a contract with Graham Construction as construction manager, citing issues over the project’s timeline and budget.

Two months later, the province awarded Clark Builders with the role of construction manager.

“We were invited back for the first five months provided ongoing information,” Schendel-Reese said. “Then we were told to tender and so we submitted a tender and were not successful. They chose the route of an Ontario firm.”

According to Schendel-Reese, the money still owed to them includes its mechanical contracting work and sub trades. The company has since had to lay off over 100 employees.

Schendel-Reese has also requested a meeting with Premier Rachel Notley before the provincial election takes place on April 16.

“I know she had responded to the media yesterday saying her team has been working with the subcontractors but that’s not accurate,” she said. “They’re taking calls from the subcontractors but there’s been no development in getting payment for the subcontractors.”

Alberta Infrastructure stated that there is a court process for respondents to prove entitlement to funds and the priority for receiving payment. The department declined to comment further due to the upcoming provincial election.
