#Repost @stephenstapleton with @repostapp. ・・・ #throwback: 6 years ago @edgeofarabia and #artjameel hosted its first #venice exhibition in this mysterious hidden courtyard of Palazzo Polignac. It was a labour of love with the focus on exposing an amazing new generation of Saudi artists to an international audience. There was an innocent ethos of teamwork, collaboration and fun and an international team of friends and family mostly working for free to make it happen. @hamzacelafi arrived with @daydban tissue boxes from Jeddah. #Khwaja arrived with 2 life size Neon Palm trees from London. Aya, Jenna, Mama, Ayman Alwan, Ashraf, @waelalajlan @ajlangharem and Tante brought that special family spirit. @fabienriggall and #futureshorts did the projections. @abdulnassergharem showed (Al Siraat) The Path for the first time and @ahmedmater showed the first iteration of his #Magnetism project. Faisal Samra's Distorted Reality was shown alongside Shadia and Raja Alem's Negative no More alongside Maha Malluh's Tradition and Modernity alongside the I Am series by Manal Al Dowayan. No superstar curators, no PR team ... just the strength of our shared journey, a bit of luck and some old fashioned (no ego) hard work. @alj_ci

There may not be a large constituency clamoring for a shift away from oil, but it’s a growing one, and even the government is looking at diversifying the economy from oil." Throughout history, artist travelers have played a powerful (and often collusional) role in shaping the public perception of unfamiliar cultures. This 17th century map of 'New France' by Samuel de Champlain, shows early distorted depictions of the Wanamaker peoples in present day #Maine. Wanamaker history goes back 12,000+ years and their experience of encounter between cultures was both wondrous and violent. Their struggle for recognition from the U.S. federal Government continues to this day. @edgeofarabia 's ongoing tour of the United States in partnership with #ArtJameel is currently in Acadia National Park in #Maine with resident artist @salaransari visiting the #AbbeMuseum (highlighting Wabanaki history) and discussing artists' role, past and present, in shaping public perceptions between the United States and wider Middle East. #culturunners @alj_ci (at Abbe Museum)

#culturunners are currently in #Lewiston #Maine, where, in 1965 Mohammed Ali stepped into the ring for his first fight as a 'Black Muslim'. Having recently changed his name from Cassius Clay to Cassius X to Mohammed Ali, the heavyweight contender (heavy underdog) knocked out Sonny Liston in under 2 minutes with a 'lightening' punch that most people did not see, making the fight one of the most iconic and controversial sporting events of all time. Ali's decision to join The Nation of Islam, provoked widespread public condemnation. Martin Luther King Jr. said, "When Cassius Clay joined the Black Muslims and started calling himself Cassius X, he became a champion of racial segregation." (at Lewiston, Maine)
