The kakapo’s face features a distinctive disc of fine feathers, similar to the facial disc of an owl.  This led early European settlers to dub it the “owl parrot”.  Reflecting this, the kakapo’s Latin name is Strigops habroptila, which roughly translates to “owl-face soft-feather”.
