Burton Sci Fi and Fantasy Con 2020

I was really pleased to be invited back to run some tabletop RPGs at a small convention in Burton on Trent on Saturday.  Burton is about 40 minutes from my current home but closer in my heart as it was the town I was living in when I got back into the gaming hobby in the early 2000s.  I have many fond memories of games in some of the real ale pubs (Burton is a famous brewing town) and of course it’s also home to the best FLGS I ever had, Spirit Games. Last year’s event (the first) was a great success and I was kept busy running games all day.  This year I recruited some friends to help GM as well as round up potential new players!

John aka RedDiceDiaries running Greg Gillespie’s excellent Barrowmaze in an open session using the 5th Edition D&D basic rules. This year we had a slower start on the gaming front, I think due too all the fun con stuff at the front of the library.  With the cosplayers, authors and other activities it was a while before potential players started to make their way through to our tables, however we soon had three busy tables of gamers with myself running Whitebox Fantasy and Dungeon Crawl Classics, John running D&D and Martin (@StormHeathenRPG) running 13th Age.

The East Midlands Garrison Star Wars cosplayers were great fun.  The Emperor made a couple of visits to my table, I swear he was whispering the force lightning spell into the ears of the folk playing wizards…

I ran three sessions in total, slightly shorter than the average con game but still long enough to give kids and adults at taste of my favourite RPG systems.

Just before I beat a tired but happy retreat to rainy Leicestershire I remembered to pick up a copy of our host and con organiser Angeline Trevena’s fantastic “30 Days Of Worldbuilding” a book aimed at writers but a very useful tool on any GMs bookshelf!

If you are playing a changeling who is only presenting themselves as one gender, why are you doing that?

Again, not trying to be offended, just curious

The reasons I’m curious is 

if you want a character that can change their appearance at will, take two levels in warlock and get the eldritch invocation that lets you cast Disguise Self at will

So if you play a changeling, it feels weird to me to not play their culture as well. And not really having a gender is part of that culture.

What sort of changeling are we talking about? What setting? What edition? In Eberon changelings don’t actually have a culture of their own and strive to blend with the culture of where ever they have settled. In Forgotten Realms they’re called doppelgangers by many people, changelings by others, and call themselves Shallar. Despite their apparent appearances they do have sex/gender roles similar to other humanoids and tend to stick to their preferred gender when shifting. In the 3.5 base setting they function similarly to those in Eberon and generally pick up their social structure, mores, etc. from the cultures they align themselves with. If we’re talking 5th edition the UA publication talks about Changelings crafting their persona over time. Taking bits and bobs from the cultures they fit themselves in to. It’s perfectly reasonable for them to feel more comfortable presenting as a certain gender. Maybe for aesthetic reasons. Maybe for they way that others perceive them and interact with them when they present as that gender (or none at all for that matter). Maybe just because it’s comfortable for them. My point is that changelings really don’t have a cannon culture of their own. At least not in the D&D universe. They have social traditions (such as the passing down of personas within the UA changelings or the Shallar having the mother raise children alone) however a constant theme of changelings throughout D&D is not only being physical chameleons but social ones. That’s not to say that certain changelings don’t care fuck all about gender and shift to whatever pleases them, or is convenient for the situation. Moreover, there’s nothing wrong with an interpretation of an individual changeling or even a particular group (clan, family, ect. depending on setting) feeling that way. Just to say that isn’t not quite true to cannon to make blanket statements about them inherently not caring about such things.

Worldbuilding is fun.
