that actually got me thinking about aizen

is it possible he doesn’t have a bankai?

it’s clear from kenpachi that requiring bankai to be a captain is more of an expectation than an outright rule, and it would have been easy enough for aizen to fabricate a bankai should the need arise anyway

additionally, no character at any point in time has shown any concern about aizen releasing his bankai anyway, and neither aizen nor gin have never made any mention of it, gin never showed any concern for it at all when turning on aizen

further, if aizen was going to use it he had ample opportunity, even before kyoka suigetsu was ‘broken’ by the hogyoku aizen was aware, however dimly, that he wasn’t winning, and ichigo was never under his influence anyway 

what if he never bothered to learn bankai because he just never fucking needed it

I’ve been thinking about Aizen a lot lately (for reasons) and I agree with you 100%.  Moreover, if all that was required to become captain was to demonstrate bankai, he could simply have used Kyōka Suigestu to cast perfect hypnosis and make the viewers THINK he’d done it.  Plus, we know he lied about Kyōka Suigestu’s actual ability, since it had previously been classified as ‘water type.’ So, he’s even got precedence for lying about his zanpakutō (as if you’d need extra evidence that Aizen is a Liar-McLying-Pants.)

It is interesting, too, to consider Gin’s lack of concern.  I bet you’re right.  I bet Gin knew Aizen didn’t have bankai.  

On an unrelated, but similar note, can I point out how irritated I am that Tōsen never used his shikai “sleep” command more than once?  I keep thinking how useful that might have been, say, during the invasion of Hueco Mundo.  Even if he could only use it on one person at a time, he could have put Ichigo to sleep and let Grimmjow gut him like a toy mouse.

But, I suppose that’s exactly why Kubo-sensei didn’t do it.

Same reason the Quincies didn’t just set up shop on the edge of the Seireitei and fire arrows at any approaching Shinigami… since last time I checked, Ishida’s arrows could cut the soul chain and cause a Shinigami to become powerless.  Why steal bankai when you could just cut them off from all their powers?

For story reasons, I suppose.
