Honestly Dean’s death does kind of seem like bury your gays though. They didn’t even kill him in a poignant and tragic way like they did with Sam in Swan Song. Imagine if it was the other way around and Dean got Sam’s ending with the blurry wife, it just wouldn’t make sense. That post that used to go around that’s like they both would have had the same fate if none of the story happened, Dean dying young and Sam’s apple pie life. Like I don’t see myself as a tinhatter (I don’t think they ever were going to make Dean And Cas a couple because it would’ve offended/alienated too much of their audience) but Cas was the obvious love interest for him. Sam got his mystery woman, but Dean already had that role filled. If Cas didn’t die at all (and especially not with a love confession) I feel like Dean wouldn’t have had to die and it could’ve been open-ended. I might have actually preferred that to what we got and the the ooc dismissal of Cas’s death from both Sam and Dean. Even if Dean didn’t love Cas romantically, it generally makes him act insane out of guilt when people put their lives before his. It also just doesn’t make sense after the widower arc as well. Wow I’m sorry for this earnest ask in 2023. This is embarrassing. Love your blog
idk. i think that it can be read as bury your gays from a fandom destiel perspective but when you strip it of all of that i wouldn't say that it is. the show doesn't even portray dean as queer so he gets killed for... having love confessed TO him? i would call that like. a bury your gays civilian casualty

exactly. but it's more than that. the notes on this one are fascinating to me, because anyone who thinks dean is acting purely out of self-interest here is missing the point.
dean's been put in the impossible position of acting as caretaker in absentia. he's like a medical surrogate, someone tasked with making decisions on the patient's behalf when they've been incapacitated. yes, he wants his brother back. but he's also trying to do what's best for sam.
s!s != sam
the choices for sam are:
- stay in the cage for eternity with lucifer and michael
- risk going insane when his soul is put back in his body
what do you think sam would choose? sam isn't given a choice here. that's why dean is trying to make the best decision for him. that's what he means when he says 'you don't even know what you're saying.' bc soulless sam doesn't understand. he doesn't know what he's lost. it's an unacceptable risk.
s!s is looking out for himself, yes. but dean is looking out for sam.
It’s funny that option 3 never occurs to either one of them: rescue Sam’s soul from Hell and then let it go to Heaven.
