Oh no I meant that's just a feature of tumblr! Only the first five tags get accessed via the regular "search" dashboard feature. All the other tags are searchable within your blog though. I think the full description of what happens is in the tagging FAQ!

OH. So Tumblr just decided to limit its most useful networking feature. That's cool. Thank you for letting us know, we've started to be more discerning with our tags. We appreciate it

To the anon with the dad: yes, men are killed in shootings, but why do you think shootings even happen in the first place? Men are taught to externalize everything, while women are taught to internalize everything. This leads to anger and violence for men, and depression and suicide for women. Even when it's not readily apparent that something is caused by misogyny/patriarchy, it still has a big effect on everybody's lives. (I don't mean to lecture you, just vicariously lecturing your dad.)

1000% over men needing to clarify that “real men” don’t enact violence against women. then who are these men shooting and killing us?? aliens?? why is your priority protecting masculinity?

Elliot Rodger Was Not the Last

Just a week ago, it was being argued that Elliot Rodger was an isolated incident, not reflective of our culture, let alone the world. While the sensation of the case is dying down, I would like to remind everyone (nightly) that he's not the last, or the only. Violence is painfully common, especially against women.

The story of the day takes place in China: a woman was beaten to death for refusing to give a group of men her phone number. The men were members of an extremist church, and were trying to recruit her.

And, as to not be accused of blind misandry, a woman beat the daughter of a family enemy in a school bathroom with a hammer. None of these things are typos.

Neither of these cases are direct misogyny; however, it seems in both cases that the victims were targeted for their perceived weakness within patriarchy. That why it's so important for us, as feminists, to begin to take on further direct actions.

let a guy down easy and 9 times out of 10 he won’t take the hint and will keep harassing you

be blunt and tell him straight up that you’re not interested and suddenly you’re a prude bitch

awesome

bringing this back to add in that either option now comes with the chance of being murdered.

That any critical consideration of media is so often dismissed as purposeless says lots about how media is valued, what people think it’s for, and what people think it does. You cannot, CANNOT, escape the effects of media. It is not, has never been, and will never be JUST entertainment. Not asking questions about your culture is like not asking questions about gravity, or the oceans, or your own body. And if you do ask these questions you can come to possess the same level of powerful understanding of the world that we unhesitatingly attribute to the sciences.

One thing we can all agree on about Rodger or Lanza or the many other under- or unreported mass murders is this: Anger is the common factor.

The common issue between mass murders is not necessarily misogyny. It is anger, definitely. But I 'd argue that it still makes the root of the United States' ongoing affair with violence patriarchy. We teach men that femininity is weakness, to deviate as far as possible from femininity, to be as masculine as possible. Then we teach them that anger and force is masculine, that warriors are masculine.

What confuses me is how the UCSB killing spree has made this whole thing revelatory when it should have been something we appreciated as a community all along. Dudes get rejected. It’s part of the process. It’s part of growing up as a man. Sex is a mutual act that requires two consenting adults. You will be rejected early and often and usually it’s not for any grandiose, particular, extra specific reason: She’s just not into you. It sucks and sometimes it hurts, but when the hell did we get to a point where men are justified murdering people over rejection? Where one man can hear about the inadequacies of other men and vindicate a murderous intention? A term like ‘involuntary celibate’ is so repulsive and vile and angry in in its implications. It’s delusional and void of personal responsibility.

My pal A.J. drops the goddamn mic on male entitlement, rejection, the defenders of the UCSB shooter, and the fallacy of “involuntary celibate” men. (via cognitivedissonance)

Can we PLEASE stop saying that Elliot Rodger did what he did because he was “rejected”?

He was not rejected because he never made any moves to indicate to any women that he was interested in them.

He literally posted on online forums that it’s pointless to ask women out because rejection is inevitable, so you should just preemptively hate women without interacting with them.

He did the equivalent of someone walking into a food court and then immediately throwing a tantrum when the workers don’t start handing them food.

He expected women to throw themselves at him with no effort on his part, and took it as rejection when they didn’t.

This was not rejection.

This was entitlement and misogyny to the extreme.

These discussions may feel like “playing” to you, but to many people in the room, it’s their lives you are “playing” with. The reason it feels like a game to you is because these are issues that probably do not directly affect you. It doesn’t matter whether most mass shootings are targeted at women who rejected the gunman if you are a man – though it should, since misogyny kills men too. If you are white, it doesn’t matter whether people of color are being racially profiled or not. You can attach puppet strings to dialogues about real issues because at the end of the day, you can walk away from the tangled mess you’ve exacerbated.

This is entirely accurate. I have too many friends who play this dumb game, and I’m sick of responding to it. It’s always the same and it’s always pointless.

I am not here for your devil’s advocate bullshit.

I always liked my dad’s take: There’s a time and place for devil’s advocate—among close friends, when figuring out how you’ll respond to the inevitable shit people will try to ‘debate’ with you.

I always say I don’t trust anyone who comes up with “let me play devil’s advocate.”

How can rape by giving a drug or intoxicant to a person that renders them unable to give consent have a minimum sentence of 0-15 years but possession of drugs without being used for rape has a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years to life?

its almost like we have legalized the systematic oppression of women and people of color
