a couple of my fav non-true crime related mysteries:

  • Cracks: a bunch of people remember a creepy Sesame Street short from their childhoods that seems to have been buried by the network. sounds like some kind of Candle Cove nonsense but is actually real.
  • Geedis and the Land of Ta: someone stumbles on what seems to be merch for a piece of 80s fantasy media that does not exist.
  • The Case of the Missing Hit: a guy vividly remembers a song he's convinced was a big hit in the 90s; no-one else has heard of it & he can't find any evidence online
  • The disappearance of William Cantelo: ok stretching the definition a bit here bcos i guess this guy might have been murdered but this is genuinely such an odd story about a guy who straight up had a doppelganger
  • Who is the world's biggest purchaser of glitter? guys. who is buying all the glitter. it might have been solved but the glitter manufacturers aren't confirming or denying anything so i will be thinking about this until i die.

OH you mean the Man from Taured? i was sure that was a straight up myth for years so fascinated to learn recently that he was probably a real dude!

“Commander, do you read?”

“Uh… yes, captain. I read you.”

“Did you identify the object blocking the wormhole?”

“Yes, sir. It’s um…”

“Well? What is it?”

“It’s a cargo ship.”

“A star-freighter? What is it doing here?”

“Not a star-freighter, sir. A cargo ship. Like the kind that used to go on the water.”

“What?”

“That’s what I was thinking.”

“I see… well, does it have any identifying markers?”

“There’s a company logo.”

“What does it say?”

To be clear to those unfamiliar: these are the companies that libraries use to lend ebooks.

They are literally cutting off library access to minors.

If you are affected by this or other bans and restrictions in the United States, be aware that the Brooklyn Public Library is offering free digital library cards to anyone age 13-21 nationwide as part of their Books UnBanned initiative:

is tumblr aware that half the uk is suddenly Very Invested in the royal family because we think kate middleton is dead

-she had surgery a couple months ago

-vanished from public

-upon returning looked like someone else

-every picture of her since then appears to be some form of photoshop

-the mother's day photo she posted 100% is photoshopped confirmed by her

shes gotta be dead this shit is EXCELLENT they aren't even blaming megan for anything at the moment that's how dead she is

like VERY photoshopped. some people have said her face in this picture was taken from a magazine cover. there's so much happening i'm having a blast rn

This is the picture the released to try and prove that she's alive and not in coma and all that.

That could honestly be fucking anyone.

They really want us to believe the only pap shot they could get was of her right ear....

That's also a manip:

The bow can be seen perfectly.

The case for the Princess of Wales having early-stage cancer and receiving treatment in private:

  • They don’t want to ~distract~ from her father-in-law’s potentially deadly cancer diagnosis
  • She may be going through chemo, which means she looks pretty sick and may have lost her hair. Therefore, she isn’t being photographed.
  • If they surgically removed a tumor, that would require a long recovery time. If they did preventative surgery like a mastectomy, that’s an even longer recovery time.
  • If it was another “invisible” medical issue or a mental health treatment, you KNOW they’d get at least one picture of her IRL out there to stop all this press. But you can’t really hide the fact that you’re going through chemo…
  • She’s right at the age when women start to get breast and ovarian cancer

The case for the Princess of Wales being dead:

  • Her PR person/scheduler/equerry/whatever-that-lady-is has also been MIA (def in the pit with her)
  • One of the rooms in the Tower of London has been closed for “repairs” since Kate was last seen
  • Palace insiders say she hasn’t even been heard on the phone in weeks
  • Prince William was recently seen carrying a copy of the films Weekend at Bernie’s and Bernie (star. Jack Black)
  • Five out of the nine historic Princesses of Wales were either openly murdered or died under very mysterious circumstances. I’m just saying…

One thing that helps me calm down about intra-left-wing sniping and the reality that the big center-left coalition inevitably includes a lot of ridiculous nonsense, is to remember how ubiquitous seances were to progressive politics in the 19th century.  Like, e.g., Frederick Douglas had to go to so many seances. Many, many political strategy sessions around the country had to include feedback from the ghost of Moses who spoke to us via morse code.

Was thinking again today about Frederick Douglas, intellectual giant, having to sit through so many seances without complaint because he believed in coalition building.

Thinking about fiber arts within the scholomance. Iirc the only time we see it within the school is El doing crochet, but like. I cannot buy that everyone is primarily mending their clothes with magic. Fiber crafting is such an incredibly old and incredibly basic and pretty universal activity for humans. And those kids all have extremely limited access to new clothing, which makes all kinds of mending a very useful basic skill, especially considering kids could learn it early. Teaching your kids to mend by hand is one more bulwark parent can give them against the various hazards of the scholomance. And we know that spells can be woven into fabric, so there's also potential applications there, above and beyond 1) basic safety and quality of life from well-tended clothing and 2) potential to build mana via hand work that you're going to have to do one way or another no matter what.

But apparently nobody is darning socks to build mana? They have access to shit like platinum, but not wool? C'mon. A drop spindle is straightforward enough to cobble together. Wool *should* be an accessible material, either as artificer workshop materials or supply room stuff. There should be at least a handful of kids in each year spinning fiber (and building mana), and then doing darning/mending on commission (and also building mana again). And that goes tripply when it's established that magical mending doesn't actually replace the shed/worn away fibers!

Plus, fiber craft is ancient. No way there aren't a dozen traditional embroidery /weaving / knitting designs that act as spells. Protection against harm, but also things like preventing damage in the first place. Magic may provide an expedient quick fix, but there should be plenty of space in the scholomance economy for more traditional options.

I know El's whole deal is supposed to be non-representative re: mana budgeting and use, but also. If people are already weaving magical cloth outside the school, I cannot conceive of a situation where mending-for-hire or, idk, tablet weaving or knitting/crocheting to spec isn't considered a normal and desirable supplemental 'income ' source.

I think this is one of those things that is really easy to chalk up to "El didn't have access to it so we didn't read about it" because she's our POV character.

Of all the thousands of kids in the Scholomance at any one time, some of them definitely figured out fiber crafts and El just never found out because she only truly connects with about 5 people.

Back during the time when it was popular to bash Twilight for both legitimate reasons (Edward being borderline abusive to Bella, the whole child grooming plot point in Breaking Dawn, etc.) and not (REAL VAMPIRES DON’T SPARKLE THATS GAY), I saw this meme on Facebook where it was Louis and Lestat from Interview With The Vampire commenting on Edward’s sparkling and making fun of him for being gay. Like… Buddy My Guy. My Fair Dude. My Dear Sweet Homophobic Idiot. Not only are the Vampires in IWTV super duper gay, you’re lying to yourself if you think Lestat wouldn’t slam dunk his entire body into a tub of glitter on any given occasion. You Fool. You Imbecile.
