Sometimes something fucked up happens to the guy and their melody gets fucked up too. Sometimes the thing that fucked them up also has its own melody and when the first melody gets fucked up the second melody gets mixed in

Listening to someone else watch the original ATLA again, just starting season 3, and there's this line where Aang suggests that it didn't just look like he died, but he DID actually die and Katara brought him back. And look, I don't know much about the lore introduced by TLOK, but this sounds like a really fun place to start an AU inspired by "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"'s take on the temporary death and resurrection of a cyclical chosen one: Aang is brought back to life and is STILL the Avatar, but his temporary death still also causes another Avatar to be born into the Southern Water Tribe (or Swamp People or refugees on some southern island, whatever).

Like, I know the Avatar is a reincarnation thing, but weird things can happen with spirits! Maybe this glitch in the cycle causes the spiritual equivalent of mitosis to happen to the Avatar and the spirit attached to them, so there's just two of them now! Maybe having two Avatars has some spiritual downsides, maybe not, it's up to whatever path you choose to explore in this AU.

I just think it would be really funny for post-canon 24yo Aang (and the Gaang and the White Lotus and all the spiritual / religious orders on the planet) to suddenly be confronted with a 10yo water tribe kid who is ALSO the Avatar.

A water tribe couple shuffle awkwardly up to Sokka, like, "Sooooo... we think our 10 year old daughter might be the Avatar...? She can, uh, bend all the elements and all that. Look at this shit." And Sokka is like, "Fuck, Aang is dead?!" Before he's like, "Wait, I saw Aang last week, this kid is way too old?!" And he has to hastily contact Aang like, "Hey, buddy, you're still alive, right?" And Aang can only reply, "Uhhh, last I checked, yes?!?!"

It's probably Sokka and Katara who put the pieces of the timeline together and figure out what caused this, because all of the other Avatars are probably initially like, "Yeah, I have no idea what's happening here. I'm you and you're me, but I'm also her and she's also me, and you and her are kind of the same person, but you're obviously different people now? Wow! Good luck figuring all that out, kid! You're really going places none of us have gone before! A real groundbreaker!"

Aang, through gritted teeth, "I am really not TRYING to do that, thank you!"

i criticize fmab a lot but one thing that i do like is how kimblee is set up in relation to the world and the other characters, in ishval he’s clearly amoral and only in it for the blood, but nobody else is actually meaningfully doing anything different than what he is. even if they have a bunch of moral reasoning that they use to justify their actions, they’re still doing the same thing as the guy who openly enjoys mass murder.

and it’s interesting how much kimblee follows the law, he takes the path of least resistance to his goals (murder and fun), he’s just as willing to work within the army as outside of it and joins up with the establishment who tell him to kill people. he only does an illegal thing and kills a bunch of his superior officers once, when they try to take away his fun murdertime weapon - and even then the establishment bails him out and lets him live! the same one that all the other characters work for!

i mean at the end of the day can you really blame him for being cynical about others’ morals, 90% of the people preaching to him about them are doing the exact same thing he is. he functions as a bit of a mirror to how cruel and amoral everyone else is really behaving, because he’s someone people don’t sympathize with.

i like how in fma(b) his main function is in part a metanarrative foil (as well as an antagonist) and to give philosophical ramblings that don’t sound preachy because he’s That kind of character. he does a lot to cast the morality of the other characters’ in a pointed light, whether it’s the fact that ed and al take theirs very seriously, the fact that roy is a hypocrite who’s done terrible things, or the corruption of the government itself. because it’s a shonen he does a lot of this by talking loudly about his philosophy but as i talked about above it’s his actions and how he’s treated that also drive the point home. his last narrative action is to say that he respects the elric brothers for holding onto their moral principles and then save ed’s life.

he’s an edgy “fuck society” character but he gets away with it because the series is set against nationalist war crimes that are covered up and justified so he ends up having some good points actually. the series needs someone to call people out on their bullshit and he’s the MAN for the JOB.

he’s a terrible person but he’s not the joker, he doesn’t reject society, he uses it to get what he wants. he gets away with the things that he does - everything he does - because other people let him because it is convenient for them. generals give him the philosopher’s stone, a whole society goes to commit genocidal atrocities, he’s let out of prison by other people to do their bidding. he’s “monstrous” but every single step of the way he’s being backed up by a system that doesn’t care and finds him useful.

it’s an explicit answer to the “bad apple” argument because he is surrounded by people who are doing the same things and letting him do what he likes. bad apples don’t exist in a world without systems, they are given power and allowed to use it to do what they want.

if you like a piece of media that is good eventually youll more or less run out of things to say about how good it is but if you like a piece of media that is objectively pretty mediocre but also somehow deeply compelling thats how the demons get you

some of the plot resolutions in house were so fucking funny. like one episode a guy had seen 10000 different doctors to try and figure out why he was sick and when he came to house, house’s first question was “ok i think i recognize this, there’s this tropical disease that’s preeeeeetty common, have you ever been to the tropics?” and the guy said no and house was like “hm ok guess it’s not that, it must be something mysterious and obscure because this is the Mysterious And Obscure Ailment Show, i will keep digging” then 35 minutes later in the episode house is like “this really REALLY feels like it’s that relatively common disease i mentioned earlier, are you SURE you’ve never been to the tropics” and the patient is like omg NO why do doctors always harp on that I TOLD YOU HAVE NEVER BEEN TO THE TROPICS I HAVE NEVER BEEN SOUTH OF FLORIDA and house just stares at him before being like “FLORIDA IS IN THE FUCKING TROPICS” and the patient is like. oh.

this all happens while the patient is holding house and like some other people hostage and forcing house to treat him at gunpoint btw.

No, but the Hunger Games did need the romance plotline. See, Snow got it all wrong for the cause of the districts' rebellion. He thought an act of love is entirely separate and different from an act of rebellion, that the two are mutually exclusive. But we saw even in Katniss' though process that the two are mixed. And for the districts, the two are the same thing. For seventy-four years they've been forced to watch their children, grandchildren, siblings, niblings, friends die in the Games or through exploitation, are told it's an honour for them to die for the Capitol and are not allowed to grieve. And then suddenly this girl comes up and plants her feet and says 'no'. She survives through illegal hunting, avoiding the miserable death via starvation or the terrible community home. She doesn't stand by to watch her sister die, she volunteers. She doesn't treat her friend's death as one of a tribute to the Capitol, but as the horrible killing of an innocent little girl who deserves to be memorialized. She thanks and humanizes another district's people. She gives another tribute a merciful death. She refuses to give up on the man she loves, repeatedly. Defying all sense and establishment.

That is rebellion, for the Districts. Love, loyalty, grief, kindness, mercy - they're all rebellious sentiments.

And romantic love is an integral part of that. Not the be all end all, but an intrinsic part. We see sisterhood with Prim, we see friendship with Rue and Finnick and Johanna (and Gale and Madge a little bit), we see mentorship and connection with Haymitch and Boggs, so of course we need the romantic angle with Peeta. Of course we need the dandelion that grows after the war, the dandelion that started it all through one act of kindness to the starving girl he loves.

the funny thing is that i don't think younger people - and i mean those under the age of 40 - really have a grasp on how many of today's issues can be tied back to a disastrous reagan policy:
