I saw this on Twitter. He’s using acetone, but a cellulose ether has been added to make it into a gel (probably Klucel—this entire gel mixture is sometimes just called Klucel by restorers, but Klucel is specifically the stuff that makes the gel).
Normally, acetone is too volatile for restoration, but when it’s a gel, it becomes very stable and a) stays on top of the porous surface of the painting, and b) won’t evaporate. So it can eat up the varnish.
It looks scary, but acetone has no effect on oils, and jelly acetone is even less interactive with the surface of the paint or canvas.

If you read one thing today, read this article on the Getty Iris about the results of an incredible project at the Getty Villa wherein visitors were invited to leave prayers to Venus.
“Given the means to engage with a 2,500-year-old goddess and some instructions about how to show good manners, what did people ask for today? … People want to love and be loved in successful and happy relationships with their friends and family. They want wealth, glory, success, health, and beauty. They want to live a long life, and be close to their gods.The experience didn’t end with the written prayers. When visitors hung their prayers, read the wishes of their peers, and responded out loud, they contributed to a larger response to history, spirituality, and public vulnerability. My friend recorded the Cypher yesterday. Didn’t do the way I wanted to but can’t dwell on it. This years cypher definitely had a lot of great talent including my homies. Didn’t slug anyone specific, I was referencing 8 mile and tryna be funny. The people who got it, got it. Just like the references in the old cypher. All in all it was straight.
