Theory: Chara's motivations

lucabicono submitted to nochocolate:

I recently found this blog and got drawn back in to reading theories and speculations, and after reading a few, I noticed a common thread that I never had before, connecting a lot of elements regarding the narrative of Undertale, Chara's behavior and motivations, and the significance of the Goner/Gaster characters: the idea of being forgotten. I'm not sure if anyone else has pointed any of this out, but I wanted to submit it for consideration. I also haven't come up with any theories of my own in a long time, and my knowledge of the inner workings and unique scenarios (fun values, kill count changes, etc.) present in Undertale is elementary at best, so I figured you might be better at piecing this together and seeing if it holds water at all.
First off, the obvious connection to the idea of being forgotten, or rather, the concept of memory. The game itself remembers the actions of the player, even in new games and fresh resets, but it doesn't simply stop with the game. Characters like Sans and Flowey obviously either know about previous playthroughs, or at least have some awareness of them. Even Frisk is implied if not outright stated to have some recollection between runs; Toriel's comment that they look like they've "seen a ghost" if the player kills her and then reloads a previous save, and Frisk outright telling Asgore how many times he's killed them.
Another pretty obvious connection is with the Goner characters, specifically Gaster and his followers. Gaster himself was completely erased, past present and future; forgotten by existence. The only people remaining who know about him (aside from, implicitly, Sans) are characters like the Goner Kid, whose entire spiel is about "a world world where everything is exactly the same...except you don't exist", or essentially "a world that has forgotten you". The Goner Kid also asks for the player to forget about them when bringing them an umbrella.
And there are plenty of other allusions to the idea of being forgotten, and having the world move on without you. For example, the Echo Flower that Flowey speaks into says the following: "She'll find another kid, and instantly forget about you." This also ties into the game’s overall theme of letting go.
Having read the theory on here regarding how Chara's influence is tied to number of kills and how the player isn't necessarily corrupting them, as well as the theory surrounding the use of the “*...” dialogue, I began thinking, what exactly is Chara's motivation? Because just having them be a demon or whatever is boring.
Could Chara be motivated at least partially by a fear of being forgotten?
It would explain their hatred of Toriel during a genocide route, who took in fallen child after fallen child even after their passing. It would explain how they're able to one-shot Mettaton NEO despite his monster soul being protected by his robot body; the fountain having possibly been made in to celebrate Chara's arrival having been altered to instead honor Mettaton. I would explain why Chara makes sure to remind the player of the consequences of the genocide route in a soulless pacifist run. It would explain why, even when the player is on a neutral or true pacifist run and they have no soul of their own and basically no influence, Chara is still Determined to let the player know that they're there through things like flavor text ("You laugh and keep laughing", "All you can do is FIGHT", etc).
Given how prevalent the concept of being forgotten by the world is, as well as Chara implicitly wanting to become the angel to "free" the monsters, and how their/the player's in-game theme is quite literally "Megalovania", I think it's entirely possible that they would find the idea of being forgotten terrifying.

For years I believed there was a twitter thread by Toby that said the resets only affected the underground (other than true reset by the player) and so the underground was behind in time by however much flowey had reset.

Now I can't find the evidence, did I hallucinate that??

I'm McLosing it

Toby Fox never said that as far as we are aware, but you may be thinking of The Caretaker of the Ruins AU which puts this idea into practice.

DELTARUNE Merch

Recently, Fangamer brought something to my attention: It seems there’s some disappointment that certain characters of DELTARUNE, particularly those from the Light World, aren’t getting very much merchandise. This is an intentional decision. I wish I could explain more now, but when I consider everything, I don’t think certain official merch (plushes, etc) of certain characters feels right for this game. Since Chapter 1, I told Fangamer that some characters would be more or less off limits after a certain point, and this feeling has only gotten stronger over time. These characters include Kris, Susie, and Noelle. Other times, particularly with Dark World characters like Spamton, I consider the game setting and think “the game is improved by selling this.” I understand if some feel disappointed or confused by this decision. I want to make it clear I really respect the passion of the fans, who love the characters like I do. I feel very blessed that the player of the game thinks things like “Kris! I wish I had a plush of Kris so I could open it up and see what’s inside!” I WANT everyone to be able to have the merch they want, to play with the characters the way they want. So you can still feel free to create goods, commission handmade plushes, etc. following the fan merchandise guideline I created for UNDERTALE. I’m happy if fans go ahead and create what they want to have for themselves. Thanks!

but asriel is a big spoiler and he's in the artbook

(undertale spoilers)

Follow up to the previous ask.

Perhaps Toby doesn't consider Asriel as big of a spoiler as Frisk's name. If he was kept a guarded secret like Frisk's name, then fans wouldn't be able to buy any official merchandise of him. You can find a tarot card with Asriel that clearly shows his boss form and name, and there is a t-shirt featuring him.

On the other hand, you will never find Frisk's name on the official merchandise. They are only ever referred as "The Human". Plus, Toby can keep Frisk's name a secret while still including them in official merchandise!

Frisk’s name also might be kept a secret similar to how Chara’s name is kept a secret. Chara is not mentioned at all in the Art Book, but they are included in the tarot card set. But without a name.

Frisk’s true name and Chara’s existence are very closely connected in the surprise twist of who the Human really is and isn’t.

I wanted to point out that in the Undertale art book, on Frisk's character page, the title for the page is actually 'Human', and the file names of the art are titled with 'MainChara'. The name Frisk is actually nowhere in this section, and I have to recheck every page again for sure, but it's possible 'Frisk' is never even named in the whole book. Personally this feeds into some of my theories, so I though others would like to know it too.

Undertale artbook anon here, I went ahead and checked through the whole book and I do not believe the name Frisk ever shows up in the book, even on the protagonist's character page. (also I have the fourth edition of the book, in case it is different in other editions). Just a fact I found interesting

(undertale spoilers)

The reason for this is surprisingly simple: Frisk’s name is a spoiler!

At the very start of the game, the player is able to enter a name to presumably name their character. However, it’s not until the very end of the Pacifist route that someone finally asks the human for their name, and it turns out their name is Frisk. This is a major spoiler for the game, which is why Frisk is always referred to as “The Human” in all official Undertale merchandise.

Random thought, but do you think Alvin is dead in the Undertale timeline? Considering he's Gerson's child, and we know Deltarune characters can exist in the UT world (ex: Rudy, and likely Noelle and Dess), the absence of Alvin or any mention of him in UT could point to that. Adding to that fact is Gerson being the only one to explain how monsters start aging when they give birth to children, and the fact that Gerson is very old himself. He could have grown old with Alvin until they died one day.

(undertale spoilers)

It’s uncertain, given that there is no evidence to support or contradict this. It’s possible Alvin is a character exclusive to Deltarune. Or Alvin is dead in Undertale, having died long before the current events, which is why no one mentions him. Or he is alive in Undertale but is simply never mentioned.

However, Gerson explained that Asgore is a boss monster, a special type of monster who only ages when he has an offspring. All other monsters age naturally.

GERSON: He’s a real interesting type of monster. The strongest type of all. We call ‘em Boss Monsters. When they have an offspring, the SOUL power of the parents flows into the child… Causing the child to grow as the parents age. But ASGORE doesn’t have a child. So he’s been stuck at the same age… And probably will be forever.

Given that Gerson only mentions Asgore and not himself as an example of a boss monster, it’s unlikely that Gerson is a boss monster as well. Presumably, this means he will continue to age naturally and fall down eventually.

why didn't Chara have determination? they were human, and pretty damned determined. shouldn't they have had the ability to SAVE?

(undertale spoilers)

All humans have determination, therefore Chara did, too. However, Chara may not have tried to SAVE or RESET before. We share our opinion in this post.

During mettaton ex's fight, do you think the ratings represent individual viewers? Mettaton has mentioned that he never gets more than 20 viewers, so suddenly jumping to thousands of viewers is very weird. Also, are there even thousands of monsters in the underground? In genocide you kill like 120 and by then it's mostly depopulated

So why are the ratings in the thousands?

(undertale spoilers)

We’ve answered questions similar to this before! Check out our answer here.

In short, it’s not known why the ratings are in the thousands. But it’s unlikely the number of viewers.

@lunarfantom: Enemies in this game have elements, Tasq, Tasq Manager and Spamton have the same element (which affects damage/armor calculations). Therefor Spamton is a cat? Viability of this theory?

(deltarune spoilers)

This theory definitely has the code to back it up! The element value 6 is used in the attacks for Tasque, Tasque Manager, and Spamton.

Did Toby ever intend for the player to find out about this shared element? Unlikely, given that Spamton is not a Darkner that Kris can recruit. So it’s possible Toby used the same element with no intention of designating the Cat element to Spamton.

Still doesn’t change the fact that this is pawsitvely hilarious.
