moving today + tomorrow 🙃
HI EVERYONE long time!! no see!! january has been a crazy month for me - for those of you waiting for scara charms/charm commissions, DON’T FRET, those are on the way, but might be delayed further because... i’m moving again! same complex, different apartment. i’ve been in a pretty awful and abusive situation with my current roommate, and finally i’m getting the opportunity to move out next week. yahoo. hasta la vista.
additionally, at the recommendation of a colleague, i’m going to be taking an english teaching course beginning at the end of this month :) ! if all goes well, which i’m very much hoping it does, i plan to start looking into teaching opportunities abroad. this is a massive pivot from my life plan up until now (which was essentially shrugging, sticking with my current job, and maybe trying to go into animation once the industry settles down), and i’m really very excited for all the new doors it will open up.
there’s my quick update, sorry for the radio silence everyone ;_;
I found Kabru boring at first but now he's one of my favorite characters. He tries so hard to be normal he's insane. He has severe trauma but insists that's just a thing that happens to everyone no big deal. He's so hot and everybody loves him but he's spending all his energy and sanity trying to impress fucking Laios "Monsterfucker" Touden, he wants to kill him or/and be his best friend and he doesn't know what. He sleeps on the wrong side of bed. He will plot to murder you but not because he's evil, it's just in case. His room is a fucking garbage dumpster. He has Death Note style monologues with himself all the time. He still pretends he's normal.
He's absolutely crazy. I love him.

i love translations i love the act of translation i love it so so much
translation is so fun because people feel so strongly about it and for good reason because ultimately it's all about sacrifice. do you sacrifice form for content? content for mood? mood for form? there are no solutions just compromises. as anthony burgess said, "translation is not a matter of words only; it is a matter of making intelligible a whole culture". nabokov referred to a bad translation as giving "the impression that I am witnessing a murder and can do nothing to prevent it". the husband and wife translators of russian novels, pevear and volokhonsky work in tandem, translating and reading and polishing in a process pevear referred to as "raising questions". douglas hofstadter asked multiple people he knew to translate a short 16th century french poem and came back with wildly varying results. to use eliot weinberger's words, "every reading of every poem, regardless of language, is an act of translation" and the actual literal act of translating from one language to another exposes so much about the languages and the author and the translator and the reader of the translation! it's a deeply intricate analysis that expands continuously outward!
