“cishet gamers would like Astarion more if he were a woman” they can’t even handle Lae’zel

I feel like there’s something to this though, because so many of Astarion’s character traits are tropes we’ve seen a million times before, but only with female characters. Like, the sexy femme fatale who seduces the protagonist to manipulate them and gain their protection; who uses sexuality and confidence to mask their deep insecurity and longing for affection and validation; who has an abusive past they’re trying to escape; who just wants to feel *safe*? We know that character so well. But Astarion’s the first time I’ve ever seen that character type in male form.

So yeah, I have no trouble believing cishet male gamers would find Astarion much more palatable if he was a hot elf vampire chick, but I think it would also make him a lot less interesting.

Same with Lae’zel; the proud warrior-race guy is an extremely familiar character trip, and one well-liked by cishet men . . . but only as it applies to male characters. Make the character female, and suddenly you’re challenging all sorts of norms about what women are ‘supposed’ to be like and what masculinity is ‘supposed’ to mean.

Idk, I just think these characters challenge gender roles in genre fiction in some really cool ways, and I love them so much more for it.

Please help me save my cat.

My name is Tecuma Sherman. In 2015, a little stray kitten came into my life by fighting the older neighbourhood cats on my front porch for the food I left out for them. I took him into my house intending just to overnight him and take him to a animal support group in the morning, but he never left. I named him Pyewacket.

In 2016 my mother died. Pyewacket and my mom's two cats were the reason why I got out of bed every day and kept functioning. They were all the family I had left. They were with me through two cross-country moves as I struggled with my grief and tried to get back on my feet.

It's 2023. Pyewacket has been by my side for 8 years. He's a rough-and-tumble boy, and especially likes interrupting me when I videogame. All my friends have heard me suddenly stop and yell over the chat when he decides to get mischievous. He's brought me comfort and joy and even protected me in a dangerous situation.

Yesterday he started to not feel well. He wasn't his normal playful self, and was barely eating. I made a vet appointment, and when I came home tonight, he looked worse. I packed him off to the emergency vet, where it was discovered he has kidney failure. But for how he looked--he was active. He headbutted me in the vet, was curious and explorative, and well--now has the label of 'spicy kitty' due to how he acted for the tests. His vitals were strong, but his creatine in his kidneys is very high.

The emergency vet told me that while euthanasia is an option--she didn't want to recommend it. There's a chance--a slim chance, that this can be reversed. For that, he needs to be hospitalized for at least 2-3 days while they flush his system. The emergency vet wanted 3 grand, which I didn't have. (And they didn't accept payment plans).

So the current plan of action is for me to reach out to low-cost vets in my area and see if I can arrange something to get Pyewacket in and his treatment started. And this is where I am begging for help.

Please. My mom's cats passed of old age in 2019 and 2021. Pyewacket is only 8 years old. If this treatment works and the damage can be reversed, he'll possibly be able to function on a diet for his kidneys.

Please help me give my cat a chance.

An Ode To Rp Partners

A special shout out to all the rp friends who have ever written at length with me no matter the character. Whether our characters were friends, enemies or lovers, or just kind of trying to figure each other out. Whether we wrote this month, last month or last year. Maybe it's been a long time. Maybe we don't chat anymore. Thank you for giving me your time, your creative space.

Whether or not our characters had to move on in their stories or from each other. Whether characters died, changed, were moved to new worlds. Whether stories and details had to be rewritten. Whether you as a rper had to take a vacation from your character. Even if you had to hang up the roleplay towel in a more permanent sense. I still cherish you, rp friend.

I think about our stories, and the impact you had on my characters. I hope I left you with the same. Thank you for your inspirations, for exciting times, for the smiles, laughs and tears. Thank you for the art, the lengthy chats about our characters, the brainstorming and plotting, the tagging and memes . Thank you for helping me become a better writer. Thank some of you for helping me be a better person. Most definitely, thank you for helping me become great at typing. I definitely think the long instances of roleplay made me a typing monster.

And if I somehow inspired resentment in some way, I apologize, even if we never get to talk about it. I hope you are doing something you love to do, or found the rp partner that you were looking for. I sincerely hope you have your good health and happiness.

Whoever you are, no matter how long its been, rp friends and partners, I will forever be grateful for the worlds and characters inside you, that you chose to share with me.
