Clan Abersher’al and the Vir Banal’ras: The Shadows of The Silent Plains

“You want my advice? Stay away. The gold’s not worth it. Things move across the highway in the night. Things you can’t escape. Some say it’s just the sand playing tricks on the mind, and some say it’s Dumat’s blood awakening creatures that ought to be dead, but I know the truth. It’s the elves. Silent and deadly things that are more ghost than flesh. I don’t know to which of their beastly gods they sacrificed to get such powers, but it’s blood they crave, and you’ll never see it coming. So, stay away. There’s nothing out there but death. Death and shadows.”

-Captain Riviro of Hasmal, Outpost to The Silent Plains.

Life in the desert is a harsh existence. Summer heat saps the earth of its strength and the winter barrenness chills that which remains. No less harsh are the hunters of Clan Abersher’al, born to sand and heat and shadow. It is to them that the clan looks for protection. They alone guard the oases from prying eyes, and scout the borders to keep the clan’s strongholds safe.

Divisions and Training

The hunters of Clan Abersher’al are divided into three main groups: the main body of hunters who patrol the camp borders and make up the bulk of the fighting forces, the scouts who train to be solitary trackers of the desert and blend into the dunes, and the Bel Banal’ras who are the elite guards who become one with shadow to stalk the plains and use rumor to keep the clan safe.

Unlike their southern counterparts, the hunters in Clan Abersher’al follow the Vir Banal’ras. Many humans believe that path to be one of blood and vengeance; however, it is merely one of stealth. While the forest-dwelling Dalish can rely on their trees and underbrush to help ambush their prey, the hunters of Abersher’al have only the shifting sands and the mirage of never-ending dunes to conceal their steps. They train extensively with bow, spear, and short sword from a young age and work their way through the ranks of apprenticeship until they become masters of their chosen weapon or skill.

Those with the keenest eyes and who show an aptitude for observation and endurance become scouts and are trained to track even the smallest desert mice across the plains. They study constellations and emergency survival skills so they can trek long ways alone away from the clan. They always remain one step ahead, taking months-long shifts at the front of the clan to watch for new locations for settlements and for new dangers along the horizon. Their chosen weapon is most often the bow.

Those with sturdy hands and a talent with spear or sword become the bulk of the hunters. They stay with the clan and patrol its borders. They are entrusted with guarding the oases from wandering humans or trading caravans, and should larger fights break out between Abersher’al and the militias of the Nevarran towns, they stay behind to allow the Scouts to guide the clan to the safe haven of the blighted lands of the Plains.

The best of the hunters, those who show skill in all weapons and an ability in stealth above all the rest, train to become the Bel Banal’ras. They are the elite of Abersher’al who study light and shadow and who train as a unit to move in silence across the dunes. Rumor and fear are their allies. They fuel them by raiding the caravans that travel across the Plains and down the Imperial Highway, moving through the dark of the night in tandem to attack and disappear before ever being seen. To become Bel Banal’ras is to become one with the night. These hunters dedicate themselves to Mythal and her gift of the moons and her rightful judgement. Upon initiation, they adorn their bodies with special vallaslin across their forearms and chest in the design of Mythal’s branches and tie themselves to one another when those vallaslin are carved with blood magic.

Vows

Like with hunters who follow the Vir Tanadhal, the hunters of Abersher’al make an oath upon entering the Vir Banal’ras. They take their chosen weapon to the dead trees of the Blackened Plains and recite these vows:

Before the Creators and the judgement of Mythal, I lay my [chosen weapon].

By my blood, I shall honor the Vir Da’alas - The Way of Sand: to be as shifting as the dunes beneath my feet.

By my faith, I shall honor the Vir Then’taren - The Way of the Alert Mind: to put thought before action.

By my life, I shall honor the Vir Din’an-: The Way of Death: to be as silent as the grave.

May my hunt be long and my shadow swift.

A huge thank you to @saarebitch and @ladyartanis for being with me on this long journey of creating Clan Abersher’al and for encouraging me with my meta. Thank you for always wanting to learn more about my hunters and clan ever since last June, and for poking me to finally put all their rites and rituals and quirks into tumblr posts.

Desert Dalish of Nevarra

Clan Abersher’al: The Halla, The Hearth, The History

I’ve been working on my desert Dalish clan for over a year now, and with the encouragement of @saarebitch (as well as her wonderful help in developing this), I’ve decided to consolidate some of the basic meta. This is a bit of a cliffs notes version, because most of this was written about in my now-deleted fic and in meta group discussions. But, I hope this is enjoyable.

Founding: Clan Abersher’al was founded by three sisters of the noble house Abersher’al of the Dales: Eya, Hethani, and Iralath. They and their households fled north to Nevarra during the fall of the Dales, and sought shelter in the blighted lands of The Silent Plains, the only lands they could find that were relatively safe from human reach. At first, they roamed the rolling hills with their halla and scavenged the land for their livelihood, but as the years went on, they learned the rhythm of the desert. They migrate with the seasons, while maintaining a stronghold deep within The Silent Plains, and guard the oases’ secret locations with their lives.

Structure: Clan Abersher’al is governed by a Matriarchal Triumvirate consisting of the Keeper, The Blood of Embers, and The Daughter of the Herd. They oversee the General Council of the clan, which includes the Hahren and Craft Masters, as well as the clan’s Warlord. All clan decisions are discussed in open forum style within the General Council, while final decrees are made by the Triumvirate.

The clan’s governance is influenced heavily both by their venerated gods, Sylaise and Ghilan’nain, and the life they must follow in the desert.

The Keeper of Abersher’al acts as the leader and mediator. Much like other Dalish clans, she is a mage and maintains the history and lost knowledge of The People. She is also the voice of the clan and also oversees most of the clan’s ceremonies, unless they are specific to Sylaise or Ghilan’nain.

The Blood of Embers acts as the liaison to Sylaise and a guide for the Vir Atish’an. She is most often a fire mage, as Abersher’al claims the sisters were descendants of Sylaise herself, but a mage well-versed in Spirit Healing is acceptable as well. Her responsibility is to maintain peace within the clan and with the greater Dalish Council. She advocates for finer arts and diplomacy, and trains the clan’s healers. She is also the leader of the Hearth Workers, Craft Masters, and responsible for the well being of the children of the clan.

The Daughter of the Herd acts as the liaison to Ghilan’nain and guides The People through the desert. She teaches the clan to navigate by the stars, as well as organizes the clan’s husbandry and cross-clan exchange of halla and other animal resources. While The Blood of Embers must compete to earn her title, The Daughter is chosen by birth. She has abilities much like a Ranger. She can communicate with and charm the halla and other animals sacred to Ghilan’nain, a talent much honored in Dalish lore. She is responsible for clan movement and tending the great herd. (Art)

Resources: Many of the clan’s resources come from the oases that spring from the deep embedded fingers of the Minanter under the sandy dunes. The Warlord and hunters safe-keep the locations of the oases and move between them to allow natural replenishment. Some of the clan’s main staples are: milk and milk products, insects, lizards and small desert mammals, dried lurker, fruit, fenadaris rootstock and other foraged flora. (A few traditional recipes include: honey/nectar dipped fried insects, fruit with halla cream, dried lurker sautéed in halla fat with foraged greens, fenadaris flatbread, milk stock from all available bones with spicy peppers, and, on feast days, whole halla cooked in the earth with hot stones.)

Warlord and Hunters:

Many desert guides speak in whispers of the haunted nature of The Silent Plains and warn traders to stay as close to the road as possible. For centuries, the hunters of Abersher’al have honed those whispers to keep their borders safe, following not the Vir Tanadhal but the Vir Banal'ras. They train heavily with spear and bow and hunt and attack by night, moving as silently as shadows to ambush caravans and humans who wander too far off the Imperial Highway or too close to their coveted oases. One special unit of Abersher’al’s hunters are called the Bel Banal'ras and undergo special vallaslin rituals to signify their allegiance with the night. It’s not a path of vengeance like they would have people believe, but rather a path of silence and a dedication to stalking within the shadows. They are Abersher’al’s elite. (Concept art inspiration More detail about Abersher'al’s hunters HERE).

Attire and Homestead:

While the clan’s southern cousins are most often seen in leather and fur, Abersher’al wears much looser and layered clothing to protect against the harsh climate which can be both unbearably hot and unthinkably cold. Long-sleeved woven tunics are worn cinched at the waist by lurker hide belts and embroidered and adorned with copper and lazurite jewelry in the design of flames or halla, or sometimes simply fashioned to mimic of the beauty of the desert. Underneath the tunics are worn lightweight breeches that are tucked into closed-toe, calf-high boots. During the hotter months, a simple cloth headdress is worn to protect the wearer from the sun, while during the winter, a fur and cotton shawl is used instead. (More about materials HERE)

Ironbark is relatively rare in Abersher’al and in the desert, so most of their bows and spear shafts are made from Dragonthorn.

The clan’s aravels are also slightly different from the forest-dwelling clans. They are smaller and lighter and built with sleds and treads to move more easily through the sand of the dunes. The largest aravels have giant copper colored sails which can pivot and are used to create the clan’s main pavilion for council meetings and meal gatherings. Around the pavilion, the rest of the clan will assemble several open-sided low tents with fire pits dug into the centers. It is all very quick to assemble and disassemble and move when needed.

Rituals:

Abersher’al has many rituals, small and large, in honor of their goddesses, as well as for the passing of the seasons and life’s natural events. While some involve small celebrations and offerings to the gods, some are much larger and involve rigorous trials and rights to obtain special vallaslin. All involve celebratory and communal meals.

One ritual is entitled the Din’an Vallaslin. It is a ritual not for the dead, but for the grieving people left behind. The mourner, usually a family member or loved one who has suffered a great loss, is stripped bare and painted with white: three dots below each eye to symbolize the past, present, and future and the endless cycle of grief, and two lines down each cheek to symbolize tears of joy and sadness. Then, the mourner is brought before the entire clan and a special vallaslin is carved into their collarbone and chest by The Blood of Embers as she invokes the creators blessing. When the vallaslin is still bleeding, the Blood uses blood magic to tie the mourner to the clan and heal their wounds, thus sharing the burden of grief and connecting the mourner to their place within The People. Afterwards, the mourner is clothed and a great feast is held in their honor. (ART) “Mythal’enaste. The tears you spill are ours. Ghilan’nain’enaste. The pain you feel is ours. Sylaise’enaste. You are not alone.”

Another ritual unique to Clan Abersher’al is the rite an initiate performs in order to become the next Blood of Embers. In honoring Sylaise, the prospect must pilgrimage into the desert alone, all while protecting and carrying the clan’s sacred flame. She must follow in Sylaise’s teachings to survive as she crosses from one edge of The Silent Plains to the other, looking to the insects to guide her to food and warmth and healing herbs, and meditate on the meaning of the Vir Atish’an and Sylaise’s all-consuming fire. If the prospect emerges successful, she is bathed and oiled and allowed to rest one full day in a smoke hut before being anointed with honey and donning red robes and ascending to her place as First to the current Blood. (Art of the ritual HERE).

A special thank you to @saarebitch for helping me develop this over the past year. I couldn’t have done it without your support. You’ve always encouraged my ideas and inspired me with your own amazing Dalish meta. I would not have thought of Abersher'al without you and your scions. Another thank you to @sirenfromspace for looking over this and giving me your support and perspective. And of course @ladyartanis for always wanting to talk Dalish meta with me and for always sending me little photos or music videos for inspiration. Thank you, too, to all my amazing followers and readers. <3 you lots.

There are Dalish ceremonies for the dead, but this one is for those left behind.

The Triumvirate

The Blood of Embers (Liaison to Sylaise and the purveyor of the Vir Atish'an) - The current Blood is Elera, aged 52. She completed her trials and became First to the previous Blood, Ylyn, when she was only 18, one month after receiving her facial vallaslin. Steadfast and unfailingly committed to the Vir Atish'an, Elera wears the Blood of Embers vallaslin proudly. Across her chest is the heart tree to represent the home and finer crafts, as well as the path of peace. Swirling around her collarbones, neck, and arms are the healing vines of Elfroot, to represent Sylaise’s gift of medicine.

The Keeper (Voice of the Clan and Protector of Ancient Lore) - Keeper Gherlanna has been Keeper to Abersher'al through many decades. She is now 78, and ascended from her position as First when the previous Keeper, Reva'talen, died in a shemlen raid. Gherlanna is strict and traditional, and takes the protection of the clan and the preservation of knowledge very seriously. The Keeper’s vallaslin is displayed as a Keeper’s staff across the neck and chest, and written ancient elven words down the arms. The words vary from Keeper to Keeper, depending on their personal values.

The Daughter of the Herd (Liaison to Ghilan'nain and Guide of the Clan) - Daughter Velynia is a young leader amongst the Dalish, having only reached her 36th year, but despite her age, she is a force to be reckoned with in Abersher'al. What she lacks in experience, she makes up for in intelligence and spirit. She listens carefully to the land and the herd to guide her people safely. The Daughter’s vallaslin is represented as the stars and pathways of the sky and earth, blazoned both across her chest and shoulders and around her forearms.

Basic Vallaslin of Clan Abersher’al

Like in other Dalish clans, when a child reaches adulthood in Abersher’al, they undergo the process of receiving their vallaslin. The designs may vary slightly, but the symbolism remains largely the same.

Dirthamen: Two Ravens (Deceit and Fear), secrets and truth that run as deep as the roots needed to find water in the desert

Falon’din: Speckled markings of the desert owl, cloak and shadow, the veil of the Beyond

Elgar’nan: The sun, the thorns and cracks of the hot, brittle earth

Sylaise: The hearth and eternal hearthfire, the healing herbs that spring from Her gifts

Andruil: Dragonthorn bows and spear (the hunting weapons of Abersher’al)

June: The bending of Ironbark to craft the wheels of the aravels, June’s knot at the forehead

Ghilan’nain: Twisting halla horns, the illusions of Blindness and Sight across the eyes, and marks across the cheeks in imitation of the desert halla markings “Ghilan’nain’s Cross”

Mythal: The sea, twin moons in the sky, and the branches of protection.

The Blackened Plains

“Once, when our people lived long enough to seek the eternal peace of uthenera, these lands were green. The river overflowed with life and spilled its abundance into the sloping hills and plains. Grasses and flowers bloomed in abandon, while all manner of Ghilan’nain’s creations sought shelter in the gentle forests of old. But as The People were betrayed by the Dread Wolf, so too was the land betrayed by the shemlen’s ravenous greed. In their quest for power, they became foolish, experimenting with magic not meant for their mortal hands. For they ventured to the Void and awakened the banalhan, which the Mother had cast down. The land could not stand against such wretched disease. Trees withered and the grounds turned to ash. Centuries of blood spilled across the earth and soaked into the very essence of the Plains. Though the vileness was eventually vanquished, the price for their hubris had been paid. Nothing grew where the battles once raged, the soil too filled with the acrid taste of death, and where the loss of life counted into the thousands, the Veil to the Beyond was torn asunder. The once rolling fields of green that had stood vibrant across the landscape for millennia had melted away into sand and scorching heat. But fear not, lethallen. Hope is not lost. The blessings of the Creators are many, and though they are trapped away by the treachery of the Wolf, they are not idle. Life and the spaces between still exist…if one only knows where to look.”

-Hahren Rajmael Abersher’al of The Silent Plains

The Blackened Plains

Origin:

In their nomadic wanderings, the Dalish do not often hold physical places as sacred. Rather, it is memory, knowledge, and their connection to their Creators that they hold dear. However, sometimes, place and divine connection converge. In these spaces, the Veil is often thin, and the Dalish believe their access to the Creators is magnified.

One such place is The Blackened Plains deep within Clan Abersher’al’s territory of The Silent Plains. Discovered when the three founding Abersher’al sisters fled north from the Dales, The Blackened Plains has become the clan’s most sacred site. Dotted with charred, dead trees and surrounded by cracked earth and high dunes, it was there that the sisters prayed and offered their blood to Sylaise and Ghilan’nain in exchange for refuge. Weary and desperate from wandering the dunes, they knelt before the trees and felt the weakening of the Veil, so thin the very air shimmered with the pale light of the Beyond. Cutting their palms, they whispered to their gods and begged for guidance to lead their people to safety. As their drops of blood hit the sand, a shout echoed across the Plains. One of the sister’s scouts had returned with news of a hidden oasis, a place lush enough to sustain the clan for decades to come. The sisters gave thanks that their prayers had been heard and dedicated the grove to their Gods, returning often to honor their generosity with rites and songs.

Ceremonies:

As a liminal space at which the clan believes they can communicate with their Creators, The Blackened Plains is often the site of many special ceremonies.

An Oath Remembered

At the turn of the seasons, when the winter barrenness turns into the bloom of spring, the Triumvirate honor the memory of Eya, Hethani, and Iralath. They venture alone to The Blackened Plains and each spill three drops of blood before the trees and recite this oath:

Bel’mirthadren enansal, vir suledin. Var’lin na’lin, da’din’an uth taren’el. Mythal lasa eth’an. Ghilan’nain lasa ghilan. Sylaise lasa atisha.

(By the blessings of the Creators, we remain. Our blood is your blood and the sacrifice has not been forgotten. Mythal protect us. Ghilain’nain guide us. Sylaise grant us peace.)

An Oath Carved

While all hunters of Clan Abersher’al come to The Blackened Plains to make their oaths to the Vir Banal’ras, it is also the site at which the Bel Banal’ras receive their unique vallaslin, so that the Creators may bear witness to their blood written vow. Each new initiate lays their chosen weapon at the base of a tree and kneels, arms outspread, upon the cracked earth. The initiate must remain silent while the lines of Mythal’s branches are carved into their forearms and chest, like all vallaslin ceremonies, but when the process is complete, their vallaslin is sealed and bound magically to the other Bel Banal’ras while they utter these words:

Mythal’enaste. Lasa mir aravas tel’souveri irassal mythas. Lasa mir’lin him banal’ras la var’aravas him sa. Uth'banal'ras na’ar la ar’him uth’banal’ras. Suledin melanada.

(Mythal’s blessings be upon me. May I walk the night under her moons and never waver. May my blood become shadow and our footsteps become one. The darkness is mine and I am Hers. Eternal.)

An Oath Burned and Begged

While it is the tradition of forest-dwelling Dalish to bury their dead and plant a tree over the grave, the dryness and shifting sands of the desert necessitate a different approach.

When Clan Abersher’al fled north, the oak staves and cedar branches became scarce and could no longer be used to ensure the peace of their dead. They feared for their elders and hunters, and worried that if Falon’Din was unable to find them as they wandered the Beyond, that Fear and Deceit would forever deny them their rest. So, the sisters once more visited The Blackened Plains and begged Sylaise and Ghilan’nain to intercede, to guide their dead as they had their living. According to the sisters, the Goddesses agreed, but wanted honor of their own for the deed.

To appease this vow, Clan Abersher’al brings their dead before the trees and anoints them as chosen people of the Goddesses. In the dead’s hands, they place two carved halla antlers, so that Ghilan’nain may know they are her beloved and should not be destroyed. Then, with the divine fires of Sylaise, the body is burned, so that She may recognize the ashes and bring them home.

Sung as the body burns:

Emma ir abelas la nehn.  Arlathan halam, bel’mirthadren suledin.  M’enansal ne ghilani.  Hamin isala atisha.

Vir sulahn’nehn  Vir dirthera  Vir samahl la numin  Vir lath sa’vunin

Eth’desen Bel’mirthadren

(We are filled with sorrow and joy.  Our land is lost, but our Creators remain.  Through their blessing, they will guide you.  Rest and find peace.

We sing, rejoice.  We tell the tale.  We laugh and cry.  We love one day more.

Be embraced by the arms of the Gods.)

The perfumed oils and sands will cleanse you of your weariness, and the spiced halla milk will strengthen your spirit. Fresh clothes will be brought, and then you will join us by the Great Hearth of the pavilion for fenadaris flatbread and dates. Rest easy. Aesthetic Accents and Materials

There are several factors that go into the aesthetic of Clan Abersher’al. Being nomadic people, their clothing and adornments rely primarily on the resources they have on hand and that can be found easily within their travels. Additionally, the gods they revere and the climate in which they live also exert a great influence, especially in the small details of their craft and jewelry works.

Fabrics:

As a clan devoted to Sylaise, Clan Abersher’al takes great pride in their threadwork. They gather cotton from the plains and oases throughout the year and weave them by hand or with small, portable looms, as well as larger devices in their semi-permanent camps in the Silent Plains. Their fabrics are lightweight and are typically left in the natural tans, whites, and browns of the cotton fibers, but are also commonly dyed in yellows, reds, and oranges from local plants. More rarely, some fabrics and threads will be dyed blue for accent pieces as resources permit. In addition to the finely crafted cotton, Clan Abersher’al works diligently with embroidery, often stitching intricate patterns into the trim of their cloths (usually in flame, moon, or halla designs, or patterns inspired by the desert foliage).

Leatherwork:

In addition to cotton fabrics and threadwork, Clan Abersher’al wears and utilizes a fair amount of hand-tooled leather in the form of belts, boots, armor, and small utility pieces like pouches and quivers. Most of their leather pieces come from their halla and lurker hide, but in using all parts of the game they hunt, their leathers also include small mammal skins (fennec foxes and rodents/ground squirrels), large reptile scales and hide (lurkers), and well as snake and lizard skins. The tooling is very intricate and hard work, taking inspiration from both nature as well as the creator gods, and is usually only done by the most skilled craft masters in the clan.

Jewelry:

Jewelry in Clan Abersher’al is less abundant but no less a prideful craft. Pieces are usually made with the more readily available and easily malleable materials found within the Nevarran dunes and plains: Copper and Lazurite. The base of most decorative pieces is hammered copper plates and wire, which can range from simple shapes:

Or more intricate pieces made with rolled copper wire with lazurite accents:

Or even very intricate pieces that use oil and heat to change the color of the copper:

One of the more sacred pieces of physical adornments aside from vallaslin are the medallions and goddess statuettes carved from the horns of the halla. They are typically reserved for the more honored members and hahren of the clan and bestowed upon them by the Daughter of the Herd:

Location

Clan Abersher’al: The Desert Dalish of Nevarra

Clan Abersher’al has a very large range within the northern territories of Nevarra.

Their wandering spans the plains to the north of the Minanter River. The lands there are fertile and make for good grazing for their halla, but are infinitely dangerous to travel. Shemlen settlements are more numerous where resources are abundant, and many of Nevarra’s cities lie along the Minanter, making the chances of the clan being spotted by scouts and traveling merchants high. Clan Abersher’al travels through the plains quickly, on high alert, and only when resources are in need of replenishment and the halla need fattening.

Through most of the year, the clan travels through the arid dunes along the edges of The Silent Plains. They are relatively safe from shemlen violence within these unforgiving lands. The clan has learned to travel the dunes with ease, protecting their bodies from the sun, and living off the wild plants and animals. They also guard the secret locations of the oases (born from the reaching fingers of the Minanter deep within the earth) with their lives.

Unlike many of their southern counterparts, Clan Abersher’al Dalish do have some semi-permanent camps, located within the safe haven of The Silent Plains. The lands there are blighted and deserted: an unforgiving, dangerous, and inhospitable place to most shemlen eyes. To the clan, the lands offer solitude and refuge, a place to bolster when supplies are plenty and abundant shemlen are traveling too freely across the more fertile plains.

Desert Halla

The desert Dalish are very dependent on the halla, more so than their forest-dwelling counterparts. As such, their herds are much larger, so long as the shrub and water is plentiful.
The desert halla differ slightly from their southern cousins. Their coat changes with the seasons: white in summer to reflect the hot sun, but a darker tan in winter to absorb the heat. Their hooves and antlers differ too. Wider, softer feet allow them to distribute their weight across the sand and conserve energy, while shorter antlers with less curving branches allow their bodies to use resources elsewhere such as body fat storage for the cold winters.
They are distinguished most easily by the white mask across their faces, often referred to as Ghilan’nain’s Cross: the mark of the goddess to save them from destruction in her quest for godhood.
Clan Abersher’al is especially reverent towards the desert halla. In honor of Ghilan’nain, they raise up one of their own people as Daughter of the Herd, one of the three positions of leadership in the clan.
