so wait, why are you restricting access from japan again??? like i get you're up to putting people on the white list upon request, but i hope to god you're getting permission from the artists before stealing their work and posting it as your own bc that's borderline illegal dawg. like, even if you give proper credit and all. if they don't know their work is being tampered with then it's illegal ok. and restricting access from jpn just makes it even worse bc they can't see what you're doing
*pokes you* lookit the cute person who doesn’t understand how scanlating works XD
speaking as a member of a scan team, there’s a big difference between these two things:
- scanlations of manga for big periodicals, where it’s more conscionable to handwave at copyright laws etc. that stuff has a wider global readership and the mangaka is presumably receiving their income from the periodical and volume sales anyway regardless of the readership of western and other non-Japanese fans.
- removing Japanese fanarts from the possibility of controlling their own intellectual property. some may not receive compensation for their work, while others may rely on sales etc to make a living.
the second shows an appalling prioritization of audience over content creators without taking into account the fact that many fanartists have ceased to make work available after realizing it’s been scanlated. addressing this problem by making the September Scans site only available outside japan sounded like a joke when i first heard the rumors, and i was appalled to discover it was true.
the solution here is to ask for permission before translating or scanlating work, and gracefully accept no as an answer if that’s what’s given. this is common sense and respect for creators. (i’m aware you delete work after an artist asks you to. that’s not what i’m talking about here.)
I’ve run into some shitty situations in my scanlating career - ppl taking reserved translations, ppl retranslating other ppl’s scans without permission/credit, etc - but this takes the cake. i hate to say it, but people like you give the rest of the scanlation community a bad name.
and you have the audacity to ask ppl to report a user who reposted your scanlation after having this attitude about artists’ original work?
Amen.
As someone who’s been invovled in the scanlating scene (when it was still more underground on irc etc) and a supporter of doujinshi, fencer-x is really a negative example.
The goal of scanlations is to spread the work in order to SUPPORT the author, to make people more aware of their work. In fencer-x’ case, you’re obviously doing it for your e-penis, disregarding any respect toward the author. Stop, please. You’re giving the whole scene second-hand embrrassment and a bad name.
Just stop.
Scanlators with shitty attitudes make Makoto sad.
