Liz Nugent Draws Magic Badly

@liznugentdrawsmagic / liznugentdrawsmagic.tumblr.com

A home for the stupid Magic doodles of Liz Nugent. For my illustration work, check out my portfolio. :] Always taking suggestions for fun things to draw! Try me on twitter @liznugentdraws!
For the foreseeable future, I will not be taking commissions - sorry! Busy with other exciting things!

Always a nice surprise when I get to release another SCG piece :) Here are some ooooooozes I drew for them last year! They’re available on the usual range of products.

Working on this piece was really rather zen/fun, although anyone familiar with the limits of the CMYK color gamut will understand what I mean when I say I got very, very tired of trying to get those greens to come out right.

gloopy glorp!

Hi new followers - I'm sorry to say my Magic comics are basically on hiatus, but I am still making lots of pretty pictures, some of them for SCG!

One more piece for SCG released yesterday! This one was my riff on Dark Confidant. (Original art by Ron Spears.)

Part of a series of illustrations they had me do that parody iconic Magic: The Gathering cards.

Oh man you guys, this one was SUPER HARD to sit on for all this time... I hope you all enjoy!

A new piece for StarCityGames.com revealed today! Force of Squirrel. :)

This time, I got to pay homage to the incredible Terese Nielsen. She’s one of my very favorite Magic artists, and I also had the pleasure of meeting her at GP Charlotte, making this an extra personal assignment for me. (I hope I did you proud and make you smile, Terese!)

It was also great as a technical exercise. It was very important that I get the lighting/values right, and because of the nature of the piece I spent a lot of time really studying the light and form on Force of Will. I took away a lot from that.

(And just like Terese was her own model for Force of Will, I modeled my squirrel’s excellent physique myself. ;) )

I love days when I can release client work!

The Creature Collection for StarCityGames.com is back, and first with PANDAS! Yep, had to draw pandas for my job. Pretty ok with that. Although to be honest with you, the part of this that I love the most is the vegetation on the left. Artists! We’re weird!

Can we find a link to all of the illustrations you did for SCG? I can't seem to find them on their website.

Do you mean the other parody ones? This is the only one that's been released so far, but more in good time. :)

If you mean in general, most of them are on the Creature Collection page: http://www.starcitygames.com/pages/creaturecollection/

Another piece for SCG got released a few days ago! :) They tasked me with creating a few illustrations parodying various iconic Magic cards. This one is a riff on Brainstorm.

See, I'm not dead!

I've also done a few playmats lately, but they're Christmas things so I can't post them until they're given to their recipients. Are YOU getting a sweet Custom Liz Nugent Playmat for Christmas? MAYBE YOU ARE!

Here's a playmat I finished up today! This was a really personal one for the client and I'm really touched that I got to be involved. :) One of the perks of the job!

As always, if you're interested in a custom playmat, just shoot an email to nugent.liz @ gmail.com!

I got interviewed on a podcast! It’s called Across the Table. It’s primarily a Magic: The Gathering related podcast but in my interview I talk about art, my process, growing up, nerdery, etc. I am actually afraid to listen to it because I might die of being self-conscious, but if you want to hear me talk about things, give it a listen!

Hey y'all! I know there's been radio silence over here while I'm swamped with illustrations to make, but I did carve out the time to do this playmat for the Gen Con Charity Auction!

I'm extremely humbled by the company this playmat will be keeping - the other artists include Noah Bradley, rk post, Wayne Reynolds (!!!) and more. And here I just draw stupid cute things..

Anyway, huge thanks to Josh Krause for setting this up and for including me!

(Psst: Now I remember - I LOVE DOING PLAYMATS)

Fun little project I wrapped up this week, a special playmat for Checkmate Games & Hobbies in Toledo. :) They’ll be giving these out as prizes for their upcoming Invitational tournament.

For those who don’t know, a playmat is like a giant mousepad that you put your cards on at a magic tournament. It sits between you and your opponent.

That’s why I’ve always, always wanted to do a playmat with this layout! Now it looks great for both you and your opponent, and there’s some personalization with deciding which “side” you want to be. I think it’s fun!

Thanks for letting me run with my crazy idea, Checkmate Games! :)

Very happy to finally be able to reveal the last of the Creature Collection for SCG! (For now, anyway. ;D)

It’s weird to me to be just showing this piece now, because I’ve already been able to show off pieces that use knowledge I learned from doing this one (notably, the GP MIami Playmat.)

Anyway, get your dicebags (sunglasses cases!), playmats (mousepads!), deckboxes, cardboxes & etc now! I’m very proud to say that they’ve sold out of products early on more than once, so get ‘em while you can! :)
