((your anon's not on so- resetprogrampfl (we're back!) - Pride aka the York AI)) "Whoa, uh- Huh. Now that's not something you see every day."

An AI that had a remarkable resemblance to him was something he hadn’t expected to see. York looked at the little hologram with wide eyes. “Uh. Who are you?”

Avatar
“Wait, you’re telling me he’s actually competent now!?” Tex has told him the Alpha was disguised as a sim soldier and couldn’t hit a target if it was five feet in front of him. Who the hell was this wicked fast sniper with deadly aim?
Either way, York was clever enough to put together all these near misses. Alpha was certainly more keen on preventing casualties than York and Tex had been when they rebelled, which meant he would be perfectly safe to try to isolate and talk to Alpha - the only problem was that he was insanely fast. “D, put your weapon away and come with me. We gotta catch this son of a bitch.”

Delta gave him an odd look. “Alpha was the best Agent in the Project. And he’s the only one with two armour modules. And,” he falls perfectly into step with York, sniper rifle still gripped tightly in his hands as he lets his team cover them. “I don’t know how you think we can do that. We’ve tried before. He’ll grab what he wants here, and then vanish again. Unless…” He tilts his head towards York. “Would he know who you are, York?”

He looked at Delta. “If he remembers who he is, then he definitely remembers me.” He started formulating in his head what he needed to do. “You know, that’s a lot better than my original idea, I was just gonna stick my leg out and trip him.” It might’ve actually worked, but he didn’t want to risk getting the Alpha captured.

“Hey, mini-me,” He said to Pride, “See if you can get a communication channel open between us.

Pride huffed, “I’m not your mini-me, man.” But all the same, the AI connects to York’s comm channel, reaching out to Alpha’s. “Fingers crossed Washington doesn’t block me out… C’mon…” A beat of silence, and then, “There! That should be-“

“What do you want, Pride!?” The voice that responds isn’t Alpha’s. Instead it sounds… Vaguely like Wash. But also like Tex.

It sent a shiver down his spine. “It’s not pride who wants to talk, it’s to real deal.” God, he hoped this would work. “This is Agent York of Project freelancer. The actual, flesh and blood human being. I wanna talk to you. I’ll meet you where you want, and I’ll make sure I’m not followed.”

Alpha didn’t really have much reason to trust York other than the fact that Tex trusted him, and Tex didn’t trust many people. He hoped that was enough.

“...How- Alpha?”

And, just like that, York had the (ex?) AI’s full attention, and Alpha’s voice filters over the comms. “Holy shit. That’s you, isn’t it? I can see that armour from here- What the fuck are you doing with the second Project!? How the fuck did you survive-? No, wait, you can tell me later. Lola’s sending you a set of coordinates, meet us there. Do not get followed.” The line is cut, and... Alpha’s retreating, a triade of curses following his departure, coming from Sigma overhead.

Pride just repeats with some confusion, “...’Lola’? He’s calling the Washington AI ‘Lola’?”

“I have a pretty good idea of why you don’t know who Tex is.” His stomach churned. “She was a full AI, not a fragment. I don’t even want to think about what they did to break her. She was always so strong.” It felt wrong talking about her in past tense, but whatever was left probably wasn’t much like her anymore.
“Wait, do you have a tracker on you?” The last thing he needed was to be on the shit list of another unethical secret military project.

Delta looks a little unwell at the very thought of an AI - probably more so because it’s Tex - being ripped apart like that, which is nothing in comparison to how pale Pride has gotten.

But, Delta manages to respond, “No, though there is a recovery beacon that’s set to turn on if I am incapitated in the field. But Pride can circumvent it, if needed.”

The gears in his head were turning. “You probably shouldn’t go back. No telling what they’ll do to you, or what they’ll do to me.” He made a face just thinking about it. “Maybe we should track down that Alpha guy and see what he knows. If he went rogue there’s gotta be a reason, and I’m betting he knows what’s going on.”

Now there was just the matter of not being followed. “Disable your recovery beacon and come with me.”

“I cannot leave my team. They and their safety are my responsibility, York. I’m already shirking that by talking here with you, instead of coordinating them over the comms. Even if Pride is keeping an eye on things for me…” But before Delta can continue, the comms get so active that York can hear them a little, frantic chattering that Delta turns away a little to listen to. There’s a sharp intake of breath, and he pulls his sniper rifle off his back. “You wanted to meet Alpha, York? You’re in luck. He’s here.”

“Good. By the sounds of it he’s doing the same thing Tex and I did.” He pulled out his pistol. “And don’t worry, I don’t plan on shooting any of your teammates, just try not to shoot me or Alpha.”

Here he was, neck deep in freelancer bullshit once again. Delta’s teammates would probably do their best to kill him before he reached the Alpha, but he had always been pretty damn good at staying alive. “Can you do me a favor and try to get your buddies to avoid killing me? I’ve caught a couple bullets to the chest before and it was not fun. I’d rather not do that again.”

“Already done,” Pride pipes up, “You’ll read as a friendly on the HUD, plus I’ve pinged out a note about you being some UNSC-aligned help. Y’know. The basic believable shit.” And with that, his hologram disappears, the AI shifting to focus on assisting his partner.

Delta takes the lead, looking back briefly over his shoulder to make sure York is following. “Alpha’s modus operandi has mostly been targeting smaller bases, usually ones we are not already at… Usually taking a lot of information before we can even be called to the scene. Perhaps we’ve interrupted him. However, there was only supposed to be Insurrectionists here…” He mutters, more to himself, “What are you playing at, you bastard…”

Outside of the building, the sound of gunfire rattles out, and it’s hard to miss the site of the battle. Especially with the Agent in bright orange spiralling above it with his jet pack. Delta moves with nothing but purpose, stride quick as he heads towards it, already clearly listening to the comms, having conversations York  can’t hear half of. “Sigma, status report-”

York took a deep breath. Gunfire, his favorite thing. It took him a few seconds to steel his nerves and focus. It had been a while since he’d been in a real battle. “Good, I don’t plan on dying today. Can’t exactly squeeze that into my schedule.”

He followed Delta, looking at the other agents. So he would have to go through this nightmare again. Great. One more thing to keep him up at night. “So where is this Alpha guy? I wanna see what his deal is. I get the feeling he figured everything out, so he’s probably the best person to explain all this bullshit.”

Delta didn’t even get to open his mouth to tell him. There was a blur of white, a flash of white hard-light, and one of the Agents in pink and yellow is now looking down at only half an assault rifle in their hands. They yelp, jump back- Another moves to protect them, hard light shield in Theta’s purple-pink shimmering to life, pushing Alpha away.

Not that it matters. The ex-Agent, clad in dirty white, visor a stunning shade of light blue, darts back. He’s fast, some kind of speed unit on display as he darts back, pulling the sniper rifle off his back and shooting. Not to kill, but he definitely makes a damn good appearance of it, scattering Agents as the bullet scrapes paint straight off of someone’s armour.
