Latest reading is a mix of re-reading some old favorites and finding some new great ones! One thing that’s been so great during quarantine is how much time I have to read. Reading has always been one of my favorite pastimes. In fact, as a child I was reading as early as 2 years old and I spent more time with my nose in a book than I did playing with other children. Stopping to smell the flowers? 💐 • Look, quarantine has been hard. Really. Freaking. Hard. From six crazy years in the city to six straight months of travel, I have always been the type to keep myself as busy as possible at all times. “Better busy than bored,” was my self-proclaimed motto. So sitting still at home in Florida with no job, very little motivation, and way too much free time to fill, I’ve been going truly crazy. I’ve watched an obscene amount of shows/movies, read numerous book after book, dutifully practiced my Spanish every day, and overall made very minimal headway on the few projects I’d wanted to work on while here. And then scrolling through social media and seeing all the things other people seem to be doing is exhausting because it makes me feel even more unproductive. 😪 But, at the same time, I’ve become a bit more grateful for the time spent at home. I don’t know that I otherwise would’ve slowed down and taken this time to self-reflect and revaluate. I’ve gotten to spend so much precious time with family, especially my 15 year old dog Lucky and my grandma. I’ve been able to revisit hobbies and interests that I hadn’t had time to revel in since I was young, like reading, cooking, writing, and photography. I’m realizing how much I missed Florida (as weird as this place is) and trying to make the most of what it has to offer. 🤷🏼‍♀️ It’s less than ideal, to be sure, but I do think 2020 has forced some much needed changes that the world was sorely in need of and the events set in place now will echo far into the future. 🌎 What do you think? Just a few of my favorite things ✨ • One of the best things I’ve done the past few months in quarantine was to expand and solidify my skincare and beauty regime. I’ve always been seriously adamant about caring for my skin because I have a history of severe acne and my skin has been such a mess that I had no choice but to painstakingly care for it. But between a busy lifestyle and extended travels, I had whittled it down to the bare basics. Now I’m back to a 6+ step routine every single night and morning. I’ve learned the proper order for each item (cleanser—>toner—>serums—>eye cream—>moisturizer—>facial oil). I’ve cut out products that aren’t produced ethically and sustainably so that I’m only supporting brands I truly believe in when I shop. And of course, as any pale girl and any true Floridian knows, sunscreen is of the utmost importance at all times. 🧴☀️ I’ve also been more responsible about caring for my hair, including finding a good leave in conditioner and some growth products to help keep it healthy and maintain my color. 🧖🏼‍♀️ Even if my mental health has been in shambles during this time, the one thing I still do daily is my hair and skincare routine. 😌 Do you have a beauty routine that you always maintain? Some may have seen this as crazy, and maybe it was. But some part of me knew I needed a change. Today, as the whole world itself seems out of control, it’s hard to know what to do next. But the best part is, more so than ever, the rule book is changing. Things that I once thought so important are no longer of any consequence. There’s a void where my busy lifestyle used to be and as I seek to fill it, I’m finding more in the stillness. Maybe I’m not being as “productive” as I’d like to be. But maybe, too, that need for productivity is a remnant of another time. There’s so much to process lately that to expect the same level of output might just be crazy. In that vein, I’m trying to be better at celebrating the small wins. No, I haven’t written the book I want to write or launched the five business ideas I’ve got floating around or gotten incredibly in shape. But I’m working towards those things in small steps. Smaller than I might like, at times, but still. I’ve learned other things in this time, too, like several great new recipes, more about training puppies, and a ton about racism and accountability. None of this was what anyone expected, but I think we’re all coming to terms with the new shift in perspective.
