Lookin' for a Place to Live?

If you’re looking to relocate in the near future, consider this: the grass IS greener, depending on where you live. Lincoln, Neb., tops Gallup and Healthway’s list of U.S. metro areas in overall well-being, followed closely by Boulder, Colo. High well-being cities tend to feature many shared qualities, including positive health and well-being outcomes – like low chronic disease rates and high life ratings – and behaviors such as frequent exercise and less smoking.

Catching Fire; Catching Up to the Wealthy

This weekend, fans will flock to theaters by the thousands to view the latest installment in the wildly popular Hunger Games trilogy. Yet, even as they munch on popcorn and watch the heroine inspire poor districts to rise against their rich oppressors in the Capitol, income inequality -- a central theme of the trilogy -- is very much a reality in today’s world. Dr. Angus Deaton, Ph.D., and a Gallup senior scientist, discussed this subject in a recent Gallup Business Journal article about his new book, The Great Escape: Health, Wealth, and the Origins of Inequality:

Millions of people worldwide have made the great escape from poverty and misery. But what if they're pulling up the ladder behind them, making it impossible for millions more to escape? If that is how the rich of the world make their great escape, it has dire economic, social, moral, and political implications, even for citizens of wealthy countries, as Dr. Deaton explains in this conversation. Filipinos Struggling Before Haiyan Made Landfall

Gallup World Poll data underscore Filipinos’ vulnerability ahead of the deadly typhoon that struck their country last week. In 2012, Filipinos were among the most likely in the world, after Greece and Syria, to say they were under stress. Majorities of Filipinos in 2013 were struggling to afford food (62%) and adequate housing (55%) for themselves and their families. This photo of a home was taken during Gallup World Poll fieldwork in the Philippines in 2009.

Summer Unschool

Ninth grader AJ Wurie could have gone to camp this summer like his friends or spent his time playing basketball at his neighborhood park in Maryland. Instead, he put on a short-sleeve, button-down shirt, a pair of crisply ironed pants, and went to work at Gallup.

Actually, this was AJ’s third summer working at Gallup. Upon meeting Gallup CEO Jim Clifton three years ago, AJ asked if he could work at his company.

This is the first of four videos where we asked AJ a few questions about his summer internship. Check back over the next few weeks to learn more about a kid who, with guidance from his mentors, is creating his own learning experiences outside the classroom.

Dr. Schmidt's presentation was truly an opportunity for Gallup's Omaha associates to learn and grow, not to mention feel pride in Gallup's mission. As Dr. Schmidt opined in his conclusion, "Gallup is a good example of how a company can do well by doing good."
