Toady's Devlog for 01/10/2014

We’re going to start in on inns and taverns now. As we said in the report, we’ll hold off on recipes and generated games/gambling until the second tavern release to avoid an unseemly delay. So what’ll be in the first release? You’ll be able to define taverns for use by your dwarves and by visitors (who will know about the presence of the taverns automatically until we get to start scenarios). The main tavern associated area will likely be a meeting hall or dining room, at your discretion — activities will include instrument use (finally!), singing, dancing, storytelling, drinking and eating. We’re also strongly considering doing something with standing orders, at least to the point where the booze supply can be maintained. There’ll be experiments with emotional/intellectual needs in both modes. Socializing in taverns will satisfy some of these needs. We’ll probably get rid of “breaks” and just incorporate that time into the eat/drink/party activities according to the needs of the dwarf. Hopefully the amount of labor time available will remain about the same, while the off-time will be more interesting. We’ll have more information about visitor interactions as we get closer to that. There will be an economic aspect but it won’t yet be emphasized. We’re going to deal with any remaining issues with multi-species forts for this release, and there’ll be opportunities to incorporate some visiting critters into your fort on a more permanent basis (most likely mercenaries/adventurers).

So I was having a bad day in Hearthstone. Scrapped all my decks because they were terrible and built new ones, but kept getting bad draws. I was playing Priest, and the game pitted me against another Priest. "Oh no," I thought, because that had happened last round too, and he had wiped the floor with me. But I pressed gamely on. He'd at least have to earn the victory; I wouldn't concede.

It turns out that for the first part of the game, we were pretty well balanced. We were keeping the board mostly clear, but managing to protect ourselves too. He killed both of my Gurubashi Beserkers (2/5, +3 attack every time they take damage) with Pain cards, so the Shield and Divine Spirit cards I would have used on them were left stranded in my hand. A lucky Holy Nova draw allowed me to clear his board, but we were no closer to getting at each other.

His next move, he had a couple of cards, but apparently none of them were minions. My turn; I played a Snapjaw (2/7 beast). And then I put both my Shield cards on it, and used Divine Spirit to double that increased health. 3/22; still safe from the Death card. I ended the turn.

Apparently, I had piqued his interest - how high can you raise one minion's health? He still apparently had no minions, so he uses Divine Spirit and buffs the Snapjaw to 3/44. Now I'm curious too. The next draw gives me my other Divine Spirit card, and I double it again, to 3/88.

More cards are played - he finally gets a few taunts, I get and buff a Lightwarden. And the Snapjaw's health is buffed again, and again, by both of us.

The game ends when I draw the last card from my deck - my Inner Fire (changes the attack of a minion to equal its health). And the final blow is from a 362/362 Snapjaw.

So thanks a lot, dude. It was just a game where you decided to be silly instead of serious, but it really made my day. I got a lot of laughs just watching this card get more and more ridiculous.

Shopping with my dad is always something of a trial, because he is a bargain hunter. He wants to find the best prices and the best quality for that price, so we go all over the store and look at so many things. But because he wants to examine all the things and compare ingredient lists, he has a habit of picking up the shopping basket and just handing it to me, my mom, whoever is with him - he's the one leading, so he has to have his hands free.

Today I just kind of sighed and said "I am sworn to carry your burdens."
