Hi, I just wanted to ask which program you use for your artwork? I love your drawing style and I wanted to experiment with different digital art programs. Thank you.

Thanks!

Good ol’, regular ol’, old ol’ Photoshop

Brushes: the first one

I'm using it at its bare basic capabilities, there’s plenty to experiment with PS :)

I’ve been meaning to draw the new red and blue underoos since Civil War. I love this iteration so much!  Spidey was such a huge part of my early learning anatomy phase, all the crazy poses and those webs really help you get an idea of volume.

I want to be a cartoonist like you, but I think there's no art school here, and I can't go to other countries for CalArts, and my parents want me to be a doctor. I have no hope of fulfilling my dreams. Do you think I have a chance to be a Cartoonist?

Hey 1kierr,

I’m sorry to hear that and that sounds rough... but don’t give up! You can do it!  Art school is nice, it helps you get formal education and puts you in a one on one environment with other artist and arty experiences. But I don't think its the be all end all! Especially, with the internet and social medias. Draw things and share them, get some criticism to find what you did wrong or hopefully right.  As long as you have an outlet to absorb more things that you like, and as long as you have the need to draw or create something, you can do it. I believe in you.

I am a sophomore in high school and I only recently started getting into art. Do I still have enough time to improve my art to pursue it as a career? I've always thought about being an artist, but now I know that this is what I want to do in life.

Hey Alcana!

You’re only a sophomore and you figured out what you want to do?? I’m like a hundred years old and I’m still figuring it out.  When getting into something, there is so much to do and so many possibilities.  animation, comics, story, design, running, climbing, swimming, reading, video games... There’s no such thing as too old or too late. Everything is just learning a new thing and how much you want to be into that particular thing.  You have pleeeeenty of time, just be into it and figure out what you want to do in art and do more of it.

you’ll be fine, do what you like :)

I'm a teen artist who wants to be a storyboard artist/animator I have 3 years till I graduate hoping to work at CN studios. What are some thing "tips" you think I should know to reach my goal? Also some boarding tips I always get stuck doing a board.

I wrote a longer post, but for some reason it got deleted from existence

My general points are, Knowledge, projects, and sharing

If you’re into cartoons and animation, try and learn about all the medias. TV, film, literature, video games. Try learn as much as you can about any and all and see how they fit with what you want to make. There are a lot of aspects in making any type of media, and learning about it only helps

Then make projects, the best way to get better is with experience. If making a film is too big, maybe try something smaller like animated GIFs.  If that doesn’t work for you, maybe try a different approach, make a comic!  Trying different things will only widen your view of what you were originally focused on

Finally, show it to your peers or just talk to them about their projects.  Learning about process is so important... and learning about other’s process can be extremely helpful or just plain interesting.

That all being said, I think this is all pretty general advice.......i’m better at absorbing material and talking about it with others, I still need work on the personal projects part. (There is just so much to do in the world!!)  But I think its all about prioritizing and getting the right perspective on what you want to do to find the inspiration to do it.

Hi! I'm looking at college options right now (junior in high school who wants to be an animator) and was wondering if you went to college, and if so, what college you went to and what you think about college?

Avatar

Hey! sorry this has taken me so long to respond to. I've recieved a few of these and I keep putting them off to think about and life kind of takes over....Anyways, here goes. I'm from the east coast, a tri-state area baby. I went to the School of Visual Arts, with a bunch of the crew here! It's a good school. I feel most schools run the same trend, a bunch of alright classes with maybe one or two teachers who really inspire you. I don't think one school is better than the other or necessarily even going to school, I feel it's up to the person. There are plenty of people in the industry who didn't start in art. Whether or not someone goes to school is kind of up to whether or not they are ready for it (and I mean this in the personal place in life sense). Schools are great for meeting like minded people and making those early social interactions that will kind of introduce you to the world of working with others. It's a great way to ease into the real world, especially after going through 12 years of the regimented life of the educational system. It's important to have a creative environment when trying to figure out who you are in art and school is a good place to try and find that. Okay, now having all that being said, that's only one path, and school isn't the end all be all. No one path is going to be the same for everyone. I believe having passion, making a lot of work and keeping an open mind, can go a long way. You're going to make mistakes and it's going to take a lot of exploring to figure out what you like or who you are. Some people can find all this in school, some can just find it in their lunch hour at a crappy job. The important thing is that you want to make something and that you are willing to grow. Also know that no one makes it anywhere alone. You're going to work with people or by just putting work out there, you're going to be sharing ideas. Everyone is your peer, for better or worse and the best thing you can do is try learn something from any situation. Blah, sorry this is a long rant and I hate acting like the authority on anything. I know this ask was more about schools, but I figured I'd just cover all my feeling on the matter. I hope this helps in anyways. Or in the very least gets an acknowledging "huh..."
