stephen hillenburg is personally responsible for radicalizing me and I thank him
You’ve got to understand that this was 2014. I’ve seen some younger lesbian, bi, and queer folks today going, “So what? They held hands. They didn’t even kiss.” Or people watching it for the first time, saying, “I don’t see what the big deal is. There wasn’t any build-up!”
But the landscape of children’s TV was very different six years ago. Like, that moment when they looked into each other’s eyes in a beam of golden light was revolutionary. I was living in a house with other queer people and we ALL screamed and cried, just like this.
Korrasami paved the way for Steven Universe and She-Ra to do what they did in the following years. And, yes, those were leaps forward whereas this was a step. But I saw it on another post, and I’ll echo the sentiment: Korrasami walked so Catradora could sprint.
Same-sex marriage wasn’t legal in the US in 2014.
Not until 2016. Before that, the marriage was only recognized in a few states.
It might not seem like much now, but HOLY FUCK this moment in the finale was huge in 2014.
The first norm-penetrating precedent rarely looks like some great achievement or change. It looks like a small violation of an established norm, radical only in how public it is. Sometimes you use tameness to buy the publicity needed to make progress.
Yo. I was born in 1988.
My canon queer couple?
WAS TRANSLATED INTO ENGLISH AS COUSINS.
Cloverway gave one of them an offscreen boyfriend and, any time an uncuttable kissy scene came up, they started calling each other “cuz.” Another queer couple from the same show suffered the fate of being heterocized by one of them literally being genderswapped.
(Guess who became the girl. Go on, guess. At least it’s not as bad as France, where they became … brothers.)
That was my mainstream queer rep.
Oh. Until this came out.
… . yeah.
I’m not even in Avatar fandom and when those first gifs popped up on my dash, I started crying. I was 24 years old and crying over a show I had never watched because a pair of women held hands.
You can’t possibly understand what it was like before that.
You don’t want to understand what it was like before that.
I don’t want you to understand what it was like before that.
But there’s a reason we reacted like this.
I pray you never have cause to learn it yourselves.
I do actually want y'all to know and understand what it was like before that because some of the hot takes coming out of younger community members make it staggeringly obvious you know nothing about our history.
Like, I don’t want you to experience it, but I really am going to need y'all to move into Formal Operational Cognitive Development and start considering that yours isn’t the only perspective and that things have changed drastically for queer people WITHIN MY LIFETIME and I am a relatively young queer who was born AFTER like ¾ of our population died of AIDS and we lost nearly an entire generation along with all their history.
now lets admire one of my favorite quotes about TRANSNESS
i’m still losing it over the fucking narrative choice trying to make a rich asshole who WANTS TO TURN PUPPIES INTO A FUCKING FUR COAT sympathetic by, uh
[spins roulette wheel] having her be raised by a kindly mother who dies to [picks papers out of a hat] a pack of dalmatians running her off a cliff [throws darts at a board] and those dalmatians actually being trained ones that i guess, assassinated her fucking mother through aforementioned cliff-running and [squints at hand] are owned by a rich fashion mogul that scrappy victorian orphan cruella initially admires and wants to be like, but swears revenge on her when she finds out about her role in her mother’s death?
I don’t want to believe you but I can’t bring myself to disbelieve this.
More than anything I DESPERATELY wish I could tell you I was joking about literally any of it
there are a lot of people who are going HUH??? at me in this post and i’m so fucking sorry
hi hey hello this post has been made before but please try not to make fun of people for their autistic traits such as
• telling the same joke/ wanting to have the same conversation over and over again
• not having much coordination and having a tough time doing “easy” things like tying shoelaces
• having trouble understanding what you mean and needing lots of clarification
• needing things to be broken down into little steps
• having extremely high or extremely low empathy
• getting very attached to things like inanimate objects
there are a lot more but these are just ones i haven’t seen mentioned before!! feel free to add on if u think of anything else
And for more ADHD traits, or just ND traits in general:
- For “overreacting” or taking things “too seriously”
- For not having proper volume control
- For collecting things or watching things with similar stuff in them
- For constantly fidgeting
- For looking disheveled or disorganized
- For not being ready to start driving, having sex, dating, etc.
- Social awkwardness or social anxiety
- For not looking neurotypical or being visibly disabled
- For not getting the hint, just be straightforward
- For “not acting our ages”, don’t say we’re throwing a tantrum or being a two year old when we’re actually struggling or just vocal stimming
Just stop talking behind our backs, side-eyeing us, gossiping to other people and making us feel outcasted, it’s fucking traumatizing. We’re people and we deserve to be respected, not pitied. Grow the fuck up and learn to respect people different from you.

being alive is like: you want to go home. you don't know where home is. you want to go home. you don't know where home is. you want to go home. you haven't known for a long time. you want to go home but you don't know where you'd go. you want to go home you want to go home you want to go home

Reblogging again because I just realized that if I had this advice in high school I would’ve never made a tumblr account.
Money-saving tips adapted for people w/ ADHD:

Ok girlies time for our prescription 1-2 hour walk, imagine we r all in line like Madeline
yesterday in economic botany we were learning about plant based oil compounds and stuff and my botany professor was talking about lynn seed oil, which in woodworking is rubbed on over furniture as a varnish. this oil has an exothermic chemical reaction with oxygen, meaning that the reaction creates heat. what often happens, apparently, is that woodworkers will finish rubbing on the oil with a rag and then will ball up the rag and throw it away, but because the reaction is taking place and the heat can’t escape (like it would on a piece of furniture where it can be cooled) it gets trapped in the rag, which gets hotter and hotter until it reaches the temperature where it bursts into flame. apparently many woodworking shops have been burned down by this. the proper way to dispose of rags with this oil is to hang them up on a clothesline, so again the reaction never gets enough heat to start a fire. im telling you this because im a writer and ive never heard of substance that will just…spontaneously combust conveniently like that so long as it’s in a confined space. my botany professor tried it in a trash can in his driveway and it did indeed burst into flame after 45 minutes, which is an exceptionally convenient time delay. im sorry im tying this so fast my laptop is on 2% battery and theres no outlet an
