& killian detective.

his silence is loud. there is turmoil in his mind, going through millions of thoughts at a time just trying to grasp at one that would make sense. sadly, the general line they followed was that there was a larger game at play here, and somehow he’d been caught as a pawn. from weaver’s hands to victoria belfrey’s, rogers had felt what it was like to be a dispensable piece on the chessboard too many times to be anything but revolted at the possibility of experiencing it again. and from her, of all people. someone he hadn’t know, but dreamt about. someone who’d changed his life forever without even knowing   ––––   she was untouchable, high on a pedestal. perhaps he shouldn’t have put her there at all. it had set this encounter up for failure before it had even happened.

‘  what?  ’   the colors of indignation start to appear on his features, hearing the most appalling of explanations come out of her lips. yes, there was anger to his demeanor, but it was more at himself for having been such a fool than anything. what had he expected? mostly, though, you could see the disappointment in the detective.   ‘  you mean to tell me that you are some crazy stalker of his?  ’   for a book that wasn’t even that good! no, this couldn’t be it. his savior couldn’t be that way. this could not be the woman from the alley. rogers looks even more intently at her, trying to find the lie in her features that her words would not betray.  ‘  why were you there that night? when i got shot?  ’   she couldn’t have been looking for henry, surely. he didn’t frequent nor live in the neighborhood back then. ultimately, rogers is just trying to look for something he can salvage. anything he could hold on to. the woman who had given such hope could not be a farce

she can see the disappointment in his face as the realization dawns on him that she’s not the savior he was expecting, and god, the sight of it feels like a slap in the face. emma has to struggle to maintain her look of embarrassment, and not allow the hopeless feeling resonating within her to make it to the surface. she wants  s o   b a d l y   to be able to tell her family that they’re ------well, her family, but she can’t risk putting them in even more danger than they already are, and it’s been made pretty clear to her that any truth out of her mouth would spell disaster for them. so if that means adopting the role of stalker, she’ll do her best to play it, and play it right.

‘ stalker is such a harsh term, don’t you think ? ’    she asks in a muted version of that same pleading voice, lips slanting in a half-frown as if she’s somewhat offended by the notion.    ‘ i prefer biggest fan, it has a better ring to it, and it’s the truth ! the whole thing makes her cringe internally ----the voice, the words, her demeanor. then again, no one would argue against her being the biggest fan of her own son ---- except maybe regina ---- so in this case she’s not even lying! but here comes the lie. she hadn’t been anywhere near henry the night killian got shot, she’d been watching him.    oh, i was just walking around ----heard there was a neat little coffee shop in the neighborhood.    she shrugs, smiling at him now.  ‘ never did find it though. how are you feeling, by the way ?

“Henry told me to come by. But he isn’t here, so I’m not sure what exactly his plan was.”

a pause, and her head tilts to the side as realization sets in.   ‘ i am, he wants to get us talking,  ----------alone.    henry has been a little too excited about neal being around lately, and she’s suspecting he thinks he’s playing matchmaker.

Look, Emma… I don’t ask you to believe in Henry’s stories about the curse, do I now?  At least not yet, she thought to herself.  It makes sense. We’ve been both abandoned in the woods and adopted. We just happened to be found by different people. I don’t know why our parents left us so far apart, from one another, but that happened. I also don’t know how it’s possible that me and your son found ourselves in the same town. But it happened. Don’t believe in coincidence. Belive in fate. “ The story was strange, Anna knew, made up by her as she spoke, but she had to convince Emma somehow.

the more anna talks, the crazier she sounds, and emma has had just about enough of it. ‘ it makes sense ?! ’ she demands incredulously, eyes focusing on the woman who somehow shares her face. she scoffs, shaking her head as she takes another drink from her glass. she’s happy that she’s been reunited with henry, but she sometimes (read: most of the time) wishes she’d never come to this damn town.  i don’t believe in fate, either, anna, and just because you’ve gotten swept up in henry’s fairy tales, does not mean i’m going to start now.

——|☠ He scoffed. Sure, he admits to himself, she’s proven she’s more than capable of helping herself–more than capable of making that fact abundantly clear, too. He wasn’t sure what kind of reception she’d give him, if he had to guess, though, he would have gone with this kind. Short, cold, and just the right sort of unimpressed.
He gives her a wry smile ( hoping that it might ignite some kind of blow back from her–might force her to engage with him–and oh how he did enjoy those engagements )

No, of course not. Then consider me your boon companion, lass, your trusty–how does the lad phrase it, ah yes–sidekick

it’s already difficult enough to get things done with her kid following her around -- and she at least enjoys his company. not that hook doesn’t have his own... charm, she is just constantly suspicious of some kind of ulterior motive. emma still isn’t quite sure why he stayed. still, two heads are better than one when problem-solving, so she supposes it can’t exactly hurt anything.

-------never thought captain hook would agree to be called someone else’s sidekick, but if you really want to tag along.. she trails off with a shrug, and continues walking, allowing him to follow if he likes, but not before shooting a curt warning over her shoulder. ‘ just... watch where you step, i’m trying to track someone.

“A dog? What breed?” Ruby always wanted one but never had the time to take care of anything other than herself and her Granny. Though she did know someone that was giving away puppies.

‘ i----hadn’t gotten that far yet.    it’s not easy to find, well, anything in storybrooke --not like they have an extensive classified section, and emma is just beginning her planning.  ‘ they say people get dogs that look like them, what kind of dog do you think looks like henry

if there was no uncertainty in his voice before, if he had made a good job at selling his bluff, it breaks away when he sees screaming recognition in her face. the name had been a complete shot in the dark, he never expected to hit the bullseye with it. had henry lied to him? that was the only logical explanation. henry had lied when he said he’d made it up that swan woman. she was no figment of his imagination, but someone so real she stood before rogers in the flesh.
the shock in her is no less apparent in him.  ‘  your name is emma swan.  ’   he mutters to himself, even lower than a whisper as his brain struggled to piece together pieces of a bloody jigsaw puzzle.  ‘  henry mills.  ’   he replies, tone with more of a bite to it than before. the picture forming in his head was one of a plan of some sort having been concocted between this woman and the author. he didn’t know why, but he was certain he’d been caught in the middle of it as some kind of target.  ‘  you must know him. the bloke who wrote a book about you.  ’

he's caught her, she can see it in his eyes the moment they change from inquisitive to ----what, anger? and emma knows she screwed up, should have had a back story before she ever set foot in this stupid cursed town. but she hadn't expected him to NEED her so soon, hadn't expected her magic to even WORK in hyperion ----but she'd been watching, heard the gunshot, saw the blood and she had to  t r y   to save him, no matter the risk. now she's in a bind, and she's clearly no savior to THIS town -- as made evident by the lack of returned memories. whatever this is, she doubts a KISS is the answer ----and by the way killian's the detective is looking at her, she's not going to get the chance to even TRY.

Image

what she needs is an excuse, a way to explain this all away. that damned book ---- what a clever way for someone to make the truth seem like fiction. she shakes her head, trying to find the words, anything that might help her case.  i don't know him, he just---- '  what? used her name, and her face, and it's a coincidence that they're in the same town now? even with known knowledge of their true stories, there's no way he'll buy that load of crap. in a matter of seconds she's come up with a really terrible idea, but it's the best she's got. emma plasters an embarrassed expression on her face, preparing for the LIE.  i'm just a big fan, so i changed my last name, you know, since i already looked so much like that emma ? he doesn't know i'm here, '  she blurts out on the end of a stream of word vomit that she HOPES is convincing, before giving him a pleading look.  ' please, PLEASE don't tell him, i'm so embarrassed ! '

“Emma, no one’s perfect, not even me. The decisions you made don’t cloud your heroic ability, they just cloud your ability to see yourself that way. You have to forgive yourself.”
Image

that’s easy for you to say ----you can count the ‘not-perfect’ things you’ve done on one hand. me----   she thinks back to her days as a thief, thinks back to her jail time, to her temper

‘ ----it’s just not that simple.

The fact that she was cutting him off before he could even ask what was wrong sent up red flags for David. “Emma, whatever’s going on you can talk to me about it.”

in truth, it would help to have someone listen, but she also doesn’t want to burden her family with her troubles.  “ i’m sure it’s nothing, just feeling a little useless these days.
