Apple propaganda notwithstanding, the reason tower PCs are big isn’t because they’re outdated. The reason tower PCs are so bulky is because they’re designed to be user serviceable. The case has lots of open space so your big, meaty hands can easily access all of the components, and everything is secured with friction-fit tabs and standard machine screws to minimise the need for specialised tools. A properly laid out tower PC is fully serviceable with a single Phillips-head screwdriver and no greater manual skill than your average Lego playset – heck, for some of the more modern case layouts you don’t even need the screwdriver, unless you’re performing major surgery like a full motherboard replacement.

Like, think about who benefits from convincing you that a fully modular computing device that can be serviced and repaired with your bare hands and minimal technical skill is unfashionable.

FFXIV Lore Resources

Hey dudes! Lately I’ve been reaching out a bit to some FFXIV players who expressed interest in getting a hold of lore resources. I mentioned to them I’d  try to set up a post making the most helpful ones I’ve encountered readily available, and this?

It’s that post.

MIRKEMENAGERIE: Easily one of (if not the) most complete and comprehensive collections of lore I’ve encountered online. Includes quotes from NPCs in-game, Encyclopedia Eorzea I and II, item references, and more. The Twelve posts and location lore are some of my favorites but really all of this is fantastic. Very accessible.

HARMONEA: Has assembled a HUGE collection of lets plays on youtube that are organized and well-paced, showing everything from MSQ to Ascian-lore specifically to Job quests and beyond. This has been truly helpful whenever I want to check a reference but don’t necessarily have time to New Game + or check the Unending Journey in-game. It’s easy to jump around to find exactly the scenes you’re looking for, and compare moments from different points during the game.

GARLAND TOOLS DATABASE: Sometimes I need lore details from specific quests, that aren’t in cutscenes or easily found in a video. Garland Tools helps with tracking down quotes, character information, and much more. Also contains data around NPC character designs. Doesn’t have cutscene quotes, but does have enough info to track down what cutscenes you’ll likely need to watch. Whether on youtube or in the Unending Journey, it gets much easier tracking down references.

TALES FROM THE CALAMITY, TALES FROM THE DRAGONSONG WAR, TALES FROM THE STORM, CHRONICLES OF LIGHT: THE HUNT BEGINS, TALES FROM THE SHADOWS: These are official FFXIV short stories associated with A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, Stormblood, and Shadowbringers respectively. The story from Chronicles of Light is also canon but insanely difficult to track down, contains details surrounding Zenos’s backstory and psychology. These absolutely carry lore details! You don’t need them to understand and enjoy the game, but they give added information and context.

ALL FINAL FANTASY XIV 1.X MAIN SCENARIO CUTSCENES: I have not gone through all of this yet but you can bet your ass I have it saved.

FINAL FANTASY XIV 1.X LETS PLAY: Likewise haven’t gone through all of this yet but if you want really detailed 1.0 lore info, this has it.

OZMA’S ASCIAN REFERENCE PILE: Contains both concrete known information, game data, and speculation by Ozma as a longstanding Ascian fan. 1.0 WHITE MAGE QUESTLINE: This isn’t 100% canon anymore, but I’m including it because it actually shows the Elementals in voiced roles and that is a huge deal. Worth noting this youtuber has other 1.0 videos documented too.

BOTANICA EORZEA: This contains all lore surrounding the plants of Eorzea, organized and accessible.

LODESTONE SONG LYRICS COMPILATION: There are often other places you can google around for official song lyrics and I usually use those, but if you want everything in one place this is your spot!

Lastly, while not lore related I do want to share a particularly fun resource with the people who might be peeking over.

EORZEA COLLECTION: A lot of players in FFXIV are  heavily invested in the design components of the game, and this is a hub for that. Whether you’re looking for something in the vein of Dark Souls, something outrageously silly, something cute, something majestic, etc. you can basically find all kinds of tones/experiments here. You can restrict what you see by job, race, gender, etc. and order according to recency or loves. It’s also somewhere you can see how gear looks with different characters, dyes, and combinations. Very organized and can be a useful resource for farming.

[image transcription: a screencap of a roleplayer's rules. It reads, "A hobby is something you passionately enjoy that is not providing you with a sole source of income, not a free for all of passive content consumption that absolves you of all responsibility, expectations, and decency. If you feel like that sentence is too serious and pressuring, goodbye. I have enough partners that are established that cannot reply quickly, I do not need another. If you cannot adult enough to work, have a life, and have a hobby that requires a reply a week, we are very much not in the same book, let alone on the same page. Don’t even with holidays, I work those, am forced to participate in them, and am chronically ill as fuck-if I can reply to you when I can see a major holiday on a calendar, your ass can as well." end ID]

Hi, yeah, can rpers knock this shit off?

Listen to me. I understand that RP is exciting. I understand the rush of glee when a reply to a thread you're really enjoying comes in. I understand refreshing your activity on a daily basis hoping you get a reply. I understand the disappointment of wanting to write but having nothing to respond to.

However.

What you need to understand is that your RP partners are not writing machines. Working full-time is exhausting. It is more exhausting for some people than others, depending on their physical health, mental health, et cetera. They may have real-life responsibilities pulling them in a million directions. They may have had a life development that takes up much of their time. They may engage in other hobbies besides just Tumblr RP. They may not have the energy to get home, cook dinner, exercise, and write every week.

You do not know what is going on behind the screen. You cannot assume other people are on par with you in terms of your energy levels, even if you are chronically ill. Different people have different needs. You can write multipara or novella stuff on a weekly basis? Good for you. Not everyone can do that. You cannot reasonably expect people to do that. You cannot.

Do. Not. Hold. People. To. Deadlines. In. Hobbies. Unless. You. Are. Paying. Them.

Tumblr RP is a hobby. It shouldn't be a stressor. You shouldn't have to log on here and write just because some ass tells you you have to write 300+ words for them on a weekly basis.

And then these people wonder why they can't find RP partners. You cannot-- cannot-- expect adults to be held to this standard. Kids with lots of free time, maybe. Adults, fuck no. You don't know what's going on in your RP partner's real life, which takes far more precedence, and always should, than fucking roleplay on the internet.

I'm not saying you can't drop threads after a certain amount of time. A month or more of no communication is a reasonable amount of time to ask someone if they saw your reply. It may even be grounds to stop tracking it or assume it's been dropped. But a week? In this world? In this economy? Get over yourself. Get over this toxic hustle culture mindset you force yourself and everyone else into.

Yoshi-P went on stream today and made coffee biscuits from the game! I went ahead and translated/edited the recipe slide to share.

They bake at 180C/350F for 13mins and are super simple to make! Just mix the wet and dry ingredients together before combining. The stream recommended each cookie be about 30 grams each and placed a centimeter apart.

I used the scoop I had on hand which is a little bit more than that (#30 size). They didn’t spread at all, so 1cm apart is definitely ok! I would’ve liked them to be more brown, but IRL happened and dried my dough out. Baking more would’ve been bad. Maybe you guys’ll have more luck!!!

Huh. Gonna have to give this a try sometime. :)
