The Bortle Scale

The Bortle scale is a nine-level numeric scale that measures the night sky’s brightness of a particular location. It quantifies the astronomical observability of celestial objects and the interference caused by light pollution. John E. Bortle created the scale and published it in the February 2001 edition of Sky & Telescope magazine to help amateur astronomers evaluate the darkness of an observing site, and secondarily, to compare the darkness of observing sites. The scale ranges from Class 1, the darkest skies available on Earth, through Class 9, inner-city skies.

You Can Now Access All Of Richard Feynmans Physics Lectures For Free:

The lectures of Nobel Prize winning physicist Richard Feynman were legendary. Footage of these lectures does exist, but they are most famously preserved in The Feynman Lectures. The three-volume set may be the most popular collection of physics books ever written, and now you can access it online, in its entirety, for free.

The complete online edition of The Feynman Lectures on Physics has been made available in HTML 5 through a collaboration between Caltech (where Feyman first delivered these talks, in the early 1960s) and The Feynman Lectures Website. The online edition is “high quality up-to-date copy of Feynman’s legendary lectures,” and, thanks to the implementation of scalable vector graphics, “has been designed for ease of reading on devices of any size or shape; text, figures and equations can all be zoomed without degradation.”

Volume I deals mainly with mechanics, radiation and heat; Volume II with electromagnetism and matter; and Volume III with quantum mechanics.

He stood there; Emily wrapped in his arms in the middle of the sidewalk, and simply breathed. It was all he could do to keep himself from tearing up, being deprived of her for this long was torture and he couldn’t bare it again. Loki had told himself when he walked away that night that is fate wanted this, she would find him again. He knew better than to ignore such a sign a second time.

She was here, breathing, warm, and she was full of life like he’d never felt in her before. She was still his Emily but there was something he could not place that was different. Good different. It drew him to her more.

"People are staring." He chuckled in a whisper as he made no move to let her go.

She peered to her left as murmurs and hushed clucking arose. "Let them. I haven't held you for months." Felt more like years really. She vividly recalled the first time she'd touched him; holding his hand as he lay broken in the hospital bed. Emily nuzzled her face into the crook of his neck more. The light wind that circled the pair was chilly and yet she felt no ill effects. Being in his arms was much like the warmest blanket she could ask for. Her whole being stirred. "Would you like to go back home?" The home she referenced was one that they had called their own when they became a couple. One that she moved from when he left. It was now *his* home.  Perhaps it could be theirs again.

"I want to. You’ve no idea how desperately." His fingers ventured to hold her neck as he pulled her to his chest; kissing her crown, breathing in the scent of her strawberry shampoo. A smile dared to curve on his lips.

"Come home with me tonight and let me cook for you. I have wine and a bed that is cold without you to warm it. I miss you."

Emily curled around him, arms about his waist, face pushed into his chest. He smelled as he always had; leather, smoke, something verdant and wild clinging to a chill.  Her voice was a murmur, eyes shutting as she pressed her cheek to his. "All of that, yes." Emily chuckled, sniffling once more.

"I missed everything." I missed everything and I want to have that back, she thought to herself. When she felt safe. Loved. Cared for. Not alone. Lips pressed to his sharp cheek and breathed him in.

His chest clenched; the way she looked at him, like torture. “Yes.” He answered softy. “Constantly… . . “

It was like that invisible string that linked them that night she pulled him from the crater and changed his life was made stronger. He tried, Gods he tired. But seeing her now, the way her eyes shone and looked right though him, he couldn’t stay away and before he knew what he was doing he was mere inches away from her. His hand brushing her cheek.

"I’m sorry for waling away when you needed me closer. I though… I thought I was protecting you."

The span of time that had stretched between watching him slam the door and leave her, leave what life they'd carved for themselves behind, was now as fleeting as a nightmare wrenched from a fevered mind. Emily turned into his hand. "I thought- thought that you blamed me for-" Her eyes shut tight and shook her head briefly. The words on her tongue, unable to give them life. "I would give anything to go back, Loki."

His chest ached at her broken expression; she was in as much pain as he was, maybe more given she was human and felt so deeply. But he was practiced at suppressing and ignoring his own emotions.

"Wait." His eyes pinched shut; knowing he may very well regret calling her back. "I … . I do miss you. Every day."

Her hand covered her stomach as she took a breath in. He missed her. He did. Turning, tears in her eyes, she nodded, a pained smile briefly crossing her lips. Taking in a stuttering breath. "Oh?"

SONNET 18

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?  Thou art more lovely and more temperate: Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, And summer’s lease hath all too short a date:  Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines, And often is his gold complexion dimm’d;  And every fair from fair sometime declines, By chance, or nature’s changing course, untrimm’d; But thy eternal summer shall not fade Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st; Nor shall Death brag thou wander’st in his shade, When in eternal lines to time thou grow’st;  So long as men can breathe or eyes can see, So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

Did she know he lived in constant worry and torture? Did she even understand how much he loved her; that leaving was the only way to keep her safe? Probably not.

"Emily… . " Her name sounded painful the way he spoke it; like it were glass shards cutting his tongue. "Please don’t" He swallowed. "Don’t."

it had been a not very well thought out plan. Already she could see her future. Much like her past.

She covered her embarrassment with both hands up in front of her, a fake smile on her face. "Oh, don't worry. I'm- I'm not." Everything ached. Suddenly she hated the way she missed him. How sad, how confused, how angry she was all at once.  "I just-" Emily turned away, making to walk down the path again. "I'll just go. It was good to see you, Loki." God damn that man. "Take care of yourself." She had a pillow to sob into.
