Fluorapatite, fluorescing

One of the more eerie seeming properties of some minerals is their ability to glow in the dark when submerged in ultraviolet light, fluorite (after which the phenomenon was named when discovered) being the most obvious example. Atoms within the crystal lattice get excited by the high energy rays, and their electrons jump up with this extra energy to a different shell. They can’t hold on to it though, and shed it as they drop back in the form of light at visible wavelengths.

No, but honestly, as an English major, there is nothing more hilarious than white/straight people who use the dictionary as their only defense.

You know what all my English professors have taught me? How useless the dictionary is, and how it could never reflect the intricacies of the relationship between language and culture.

The dictionary won’t save you. Sorry.

Ah, the classic “Oh, but the dictionary defines racism/sexism/{anything} as…”

Interesting from the perspective of a language major. Also, the “dictionary-definition” argument wouldn’t work for any subject if you study it at an advanced level.

You wouldn’t argue with a geneticist over the definition of a gene based on what is defined in the dictionary.

You wouldn’t argue with an astronomer over the definition of a black hole based on what is defined in a dictionary.

So why take a discussion on racism/sexism/oppression and boil it down to a dictionary definition of half a sentence?

In secondary school, at age 13, my answer to the question “What is a species?” was no more than a sentence, copied directly from the text book and corresponding to the dictionary definition.

At university, at age 21, my answer to the question “What is a species?” was a 2000-word essay which discussed different perspectives on the topic over the last hundred years.

When you bring in the dictionary definition to a discussion as a means of ending it, you are being nothing short of ignorant.

Dictionary-thumpers are just as bad as bible-thumpers. Read another goddamn book, nobody will take you seriously if you only have one source.

LOUDER FOR THEM IN THE BACK

Exactly. The dictionary does not define language. People define language. The dictionary was only ever intended to be a guide to how people are using words at the time.

Contradicting disorders are valid and real. Having a disorder that makes you impulsive but another that makes you paranoid of doing impulsive things is valid. Having a disorder that makes you seek attention and another that makes you avoid it is valid. Contradicting disorders can be comorbid, and are valid.

men give themselves way too much credit for being the bare minimum.

for being polite

for not cheating

for not cat calling

for respecting a woman’s wishes

for waiting

for listening

for not being blatantly disrespectful

for being non-violent

Here’s to all my boys with love handles, stretch marks, ribs that show, who feel they are too big or too small, who feel “unmanly,” who have cellulite, who can’t grow facial hair, who can’t seem to gain weight or lose it, who feel “too short” or wish they looked like a male model. Y'all matter. Love you. 💕

This reassures me very much. :D

My question is do the die affect topography any or just set the borders?

I imagine it’s up to the person making the map. But maybe the more dice in a single spot, the more mountainous or forested the area. Maybe choose a few dice to be deemed cities, and some dice for ruins.

Maybe let the dice choose, like a nat 20 would be the world capital, and 10’s would be mountains or something like that.

1-5: Plains and fields

6-8: Forests

9-11: Mountains

12-14: Tundras and snow covered lands

15-17: Farms and towns

18-19: Larger cities

20: Capitals and castles

what would happing if all the dice landed on a 20?

then you have a very busy continent
