I've seen people say that crossdressing and drag are bad because they make a mockery of transsexuals, that it's "like blackface", and I strongly disagree.

Crossdressers aren't bad people and you can't ban crossdressing and drag without also hurting future transsexuals.

Crossdressing and drag allow people to explore their gender expression. And some small percentage of them, eventually, will transition. There are a lot of transsexuals who tried crossdressing or drag before they were sure they wanted to transition.

In fact in the old school crossdresser community transitioning is sometimes called "going full time". As in, "I'm Alice on weekends but some day I might go full time." From that perspective, transsexuality does not have to be a wholly distinct thing from crossdressing, but rather it can be a commitment to be always who you already were part-time.

Crossdressers, of course, have never been dependent on the Benjamin protocol and all its baggage, so their perspective is one in which there is no great need to divide the community into a puritanical binary of deserving transsexuals and fetishistic transvestites.

I like that about them.
