I have this pet peeve about self defense gif posts that go around, showing techniques that honestly, take a lot of effort or practice to put into effect. The gifs almost always show a compliant training partner, or a technique that is applied with so little resistance as to look like movie choreography. If you want to be prepared to defend yourself, in a situation against someone who is trying with all their might to hurt you, you have to practice consistently against a resisting partner. 

None of this “oh, just move your hand like so and their grip will break,” nonsense. The physics of that movement have a strength element to them. The stronger the attacker’s grip, the more precise / strong / fast you have to be. Or it won’t work, you’re caught, and you get hurt.

“Oh it’s just a matter of striking the groin,” or, “This attack can be simply defused by,” NO. Defusing attacks is never simple. It requires lots of practice, and building muscle memory. If you do a move for the first time in your life against a legitimate attacker, god fucking help you. I hope you get it right. Because a of techniques are hard to grasp the first 100 times you do it against a friend. Your very first rep shouldn’t be happening in a life or death situation. 

I guess I feel like these “reblog to save a life” type gifset posts understate the importance of practice, and overstate the magical effectiveness of a handful of techniques. Practice practice practice. Beyond building muscle memory, you condition yourself not to fucking panic and get faint or short of breath when you exert yourself against full-strength attacks. Starting any combat training can be fucking scary. Desensitizing yourself to the paralysis attackers can cause you, is one of the biggest favors you can do yourself. Train your body, train your mind. Don’t ever think reading or watching or reblogging is enough.
