ding ding ding!
Letβs talk about the fact that Neil Josten is so SCARY from other perspectives. From his own heβs just like,,, βiβm just a kid fucking around before i dieβ but from Jeanβs he seems certifiably insane. I somehow like him even more now.
Jean saying "He will be court" about Andrew to a tv in an empty room is so so so important to me
Been seeing some stuff about how tsc is "plotless" and lemme just say, it IS. It is plotless but that's not a bad thing. Aftg seemed more happening because it was about dealing. Neil still had to deal with his father, still had to deal with the Moriyamas, had a psychopath hellbent on hurting him and everyone he cared about.
Tsc is nothing like that. It's about healing. Jean's not running from actual, physical threats but from his own trauma. That is not a bad thing. If it's not your cup of tea, fine but please don't shit on the work and say it's "plotless" or "bad". The plot is Jean healing, Jean learning to live and exist beyond the clutches of the Nest.
Neil came in, caused general chaos. Gave the fbi agents attitude, ordered Thai and a hit, was ready to evade the fbi so Jean could grieve his little sister, framed a whole different crime family, and dropped Jean back home like nothing happened and I love him for it.
Seeing neil from an outside pov actually 100% makes it clear why andrew was as intrigued as he was. Because we as readers could see how stressed neil was 24/7 but seeing him from jeanβs perspective really helps to see how absolutely off the rails he seems if you donβt have the insider understanding of his character
promises, promises || tsc chapter 5
Jeanβs thoughts on Neil are so fascinating but also a little hilarious because we all know heβs a little freak but you never see him called out on it when itβs his POV
screaming crying and throwing up. nora I fear I wonβt survive this
Jean Moreau
You know I waited and waited and waited for Jean to break down, to cry, to finally let it all out the entire time I was reading tsc but he didn't. Not when his mind flashed back to the Nest, not when he thought of "the Master", not when he thought of Riko. He could live with all that had been done to him by telling himself he deserved it but what finally broke him, ripped him open like the fraying edge of a tattered cloth was the realisation or perhaps the acceptance that his parents hadn't cared for either of them - him or his sister.
Wymack fought to keep Kevin safe even when he knew the risks and was oblivious to Kevin's parentage. He was willing to go to such great extents for someone who was essentially a stranger if not for some long lost short-lived association with his mother. He took on the mafia for Kevin and yet Jean's parents, his flesh and blood, couldn't be bothered to even keep his sister, just 12 years old - innocent to the world and its ways - alive, not even safe just alive.
It wasn't pain, mental or physical, that broke Jean it was betrayal.
(I'm so so glad that he has Jeremy, Cat and Laila at his back now who are willing to listen and wait until he's ready to tell and share his burdens. I'm glad he has Kevin who keeps him alive even as it is with some twisted promise and that he has Neil who will sit in the front of the FBI, lie through his teeth and order a hit on someone who hurt Jean as if he was ordering water at a diner)
I don't think I've seen enough posts about the Jerejean scar scene.
Every line is a banger. Jeremy holding Jean's face. "Focus on what's important." "I am." Jean being speechless. "Who did this to you?" JEREMY KNOX THE MAN YOU ARE.
tsc was a comedy actually, look:
aka Jean Moreau being salty for 350 pages
(I have so many of these, I'm 100% gonna make a part 2)
neilβs insistence on hiding his scars for as long as possible bc he knows itβs not normal and the foxes Will stare and ask questions vs jean just stripping in front of the trojans bc he expects his teammates to ignore his abuse since it isnβt their business... neil flinching from wymack's loud voice bc he doesnt trust men old enough to be his father vs jean holding his racquet out for rhemann to hit him after "failing" to do what he said he would do because he expects to be beaten to a pulp by his superiors and because "contrition, coach"... it makes me sick!!! i need to wrap them up in a warm blanket forever
Neil makes SCRAPS of appearances in tsc but he serves cunt and leaves. Absolute legend. I get now why Jean was at his wits end with this guy. He orders drinks and food, makes fucking fbi agents WAIT for him then sits in an INTERROGATION and eats take out as if it's just another day for him. Jean probably got 20 separate heart attacks because of this man and then this gremlin goes ahead and orders a hit on the behalf of a man he knew only in pain while sitting in a very public diner and waiting on fbi agents to show up and drag them away.
Neil Fucking Josten, Andrew has his hands full. Never a dull day with him.
