it says in the application that you aren't assigning shark species -- does this mean this year you aren't doing things like previous years to make sure there's not too many of some species? or will it be a different system? no shade, i was just very curious when i read that! i love this zine!!

Avatar

I included that this year because folks have seemed confused in the past while applying. Some answers were "Whatever you assign me is fine" and I just don't have the time to assign sharks to folks.

It's run the same way as previous years where you pick a shark or two for yourself and if there's more than 10 of that species I'll ask you to go with your second choice!

Hope that helps!

For this year's @swimonzine , I had the opportunity to illustrate the spectacular Epaulette Shark!

Named for their giant black spots behind its pectoral fins, these small sharks reside in the shallow waters of Australia and New Guinea. Rather than swimming through the water, they use their fins to push off of surfaces: a unique "walking" motion that helps them navigate rocky reefs and tide pools.

Come night time, the tides of their habitat recede, leaving these sharks with minimal oxygen or water to move around in. Incredibly, they've evolved to withstand these hypoxic conditions for up to three hours until the tide flows back in!

Check out this latest issue of the Swim On Zine, full of all sorts of beautiful shark artwork 🦈

Swim On 9 2023 Donations

The yearly amount for all Swim On zines has been donated! We did so well this year! Thank you for your help with shark conservation.

This year we made $685.00

All proceeds were donated to finfree.org, which is listed as the Rob Stewart Sharkwater Foundation. Swim On donations are sent out on a yearly basis every September 30th. I take care of all the fees that stripe takes myself, so Finfree gets the full amount. All Swim On zines are still available for purchase!
